For the Second year in a row, the Soccer Board of Officials presented the Sportsmanship Trophy to the Beek- mantown girls. This award represented the girls' conduct on and off the field. The trophy was awarded to one girl 's team and one boy 's team in the combined Champlain Valley and Mountain Valley leagues. It is a great honor and a credit to our school to ha ve received this trophy two years in a row. Senior members of the team will be missed next year. As soon as the early practice sessions began, the Eagles knew they were contenders for the 1981 CML. Championship. Returning quarterback Andy light was ready to become the best player in the league at his position, Shannon Carter and Eddie Castine were two of the Hnest ball carriers in the C.lLl.,' both offensive and defensive lines were loaded with experienced players. But other area schools had improved as well And as the season progressed it became obvious that this was a year when no one team would dominate the standings. A lew lucky bounces, and the Eagles might have won it all but it was not to be. Two squeekers with Moriah and Plattsburgh Hgh were enough to take the team out of contention. But despite the losses, and the worst fall weather anybody could remember, the season was Hlled with plenty of excitement and a number of outstanding performances. Andy Light tossed nine touchdown passes and completed forty-seven out of sixty-two passes for 480 yards. ight was named C.Il.t. All Star by the Press ltegublican. Shannon Carter, injured most of the season still managed to carry the ball an incredible 134 times and gained 879 yards in the process. He was also named to the All Star team and will return for the 1982 season. Whatever doubts the team may ha ve had about the 1981 season - whether or not it had been worth all the work, all the pain, all the cold wet afternoons - were dispelled on the last day of the season. In front of a big and excited Homecoming crowd the Eagles faced down the always tough Peru Indians on one ol the few sunny days ol the season. Peru had scored more points than any other team in the league and had lost only once, and needed a victory to earn the C VAC championship. But the Eagles, with their pride on the line, dug in and handed the lndians a stunning 13-12 defeat dropping Peru to second place and sending Plattsburgh High School to the North Country Super Bowl . -3' X EAGLES, EAGLES! Only one player returned from the previous, unde- feated 1 IL team and Mr. Amorelli the head coach, felt that the new LIL team started out as the most inexperienced team in the conference. The most outstanding characteristic of this team was its defense. In their game against Plattsburgh High, the I. V. 's were picked to lose by three touchdowns. In spite of this, the tough Beekman- town defense throttled Plattsburgh 's offense as the teams battled to a scoreless tie. Among the many fine players that made up the 1 IL team were two outstanding freshmen, running back, lason Covey and wingback, Dwayne Gel- wicks. Gelwicks was the team 's leading scorer and was also exceptional on defense. Mr. Williams and Mr. Haley assisted Mr. llmorelli in coaching the 1981 team. Memories are an old song played over and over until the record is scratched and warped Memories are the things that no one can take from you. When you re old and gray, all that you will have is memories when all your dreams fade away. When all the friends are gone, the memories still linger on. Memories are a kiss in the night. Memories are a strong, burning light. Memories are dreams that have not gone without a fight. Memories are all that you will have on the path of life. Memories are yours forever.
