the year of the eagles! lt was, most people agreed, one of the strongest football teams in the north country in more than a decade. And who could argue? Undefeated in regular season play: winners of the first north country Super Bowl against a big Carthage team which had dominated play in section ten: 327 total points scored in nine games. ' After three seasons of sharing the championship with someone else, or finishing second, the Eagles finally ran away with one. The big, fast, skillful team dominated the Champlain Valley League from the first game with Ticonderoga to the flnal sectlon matchup with Carthage. Along the way scores of 88-O, 32-8, 35-0, 41-0. 45-0, and a sweet 60-0, trouncing of arch rival Plattsburgh High, provided local fans with some of the most awesome high school heroics ever seen ln the area. Only the well prepared and determined Peru team managed to give the Eagles any competition at all as the two teams battled to a 7-7 tie on a muddy field. The 1979 team had everything. Plenty of excellent runners in Bob Burnell, Roger Desroches and Jon Seabron, a gifted quarterback ln Andy Light and surprisingly good pass receivers gave the Eagles a balanced attack which frustrated all attempts to contain it. Beekmantown's defense was no less impressive. Five teams were unable to score at all against lt: those teams that did, managed only S9 points between them. Area sports writers were so impressed with the team that six Beekmantown players were named to the Press Republican first team offensive squad, and six more to the first team defensive squad. They were: offense, Bob Burnell Cklckerj, Roger Desroches Crunning backj, Bryan Foster Cendh, Mike Sears Ctacklej, Mlke Gregoire Cguardb, and Ray Myers Ccenterj. Defense, Terry Brown ftacklel, Bob Burnell Cnose-guardj, Joe Burl Cpunterb, Bryan Foster Cdeep backb, Mike Gregoire Clinebackerb, and Mike Sears Cendb. Burnell and Desroches were incredible. Leading the league in scoring and yardage, they provided Beekmantown with the most devasting running attack anyone in the league could remember. .Ioe Burl's catches drew more than one double-take from spectators, and other players, as time after time he snared passes, as if by magic, out of the sky with his fingertips. As the 1980 team begins its training this spring, team members know they have'a tough act to follow. I K ..e'- - ,fr KQQ VL 44 . X. .
