Of all the courses offered in junior and senior high school, social studies is one of the most important. An understanding of the concepts involved in the various social studies can promote a healthier society. Each student is required to take four years of courses in this department. The social studies program offers an impressive list of courses. Basic to the curriculum are Afro!Asian Culture Study, World History, and Ameri- can Studies. ln the senior year many electives are offered. These include American Political Behavior, Canadian Studies, Decision Making, Con- sumer Economics, Sociology, and Behavioral Science. Though the required social studies courses are seldom at the top of most student's list of favorites, the electives provide many opportunities for special speakers, movies, and field trips. These provide the students with first-hand experiences that are educational, and enjoyable as well. Q 'KN 4 S fl :ul SOCIAL STUDIES i 'WI IRIV Top row: Mr. Maston, nllr. Activities got started this fall with the election of new officers. Cheryl Seabron was elected President, Janet Rascoe Vice President, and Debbie Slaughter, Secretary!Treasurer. The Annual Spaghetti Dinner was held in December. Each member had an opportunity to try his hand at setting tables, waiting on patrons and washing dishes. It was fun, as well as profitable. The profits went into the activity treasury. Cheryl Seabron and Bruce Carlin were nominated for National Honor Society Scholarships by their fellow members. In band, students learn not only how to play music, but to appreciate all the hard work and determination it takes to become a musician. Under the direction of Mr. Benjamin Davies, this year's band worked as hard as ever promoting school spirit at football games, adding to the Christmas spirit with traditional and new Yuletide sounds, and acknowledging the arrival of spring with the annual spring concert. They have skied at Whiteface Mountain and Mount Van Hoevenberg. Mount Marcy, the highest peak in the state was the goal of the hiking club. This year, the cIub's future was threatened when the Board of Education cut the program from the 1977-78 budget. But thanks to the perseverance of Mr. Davies, a modified program was carried out. The Booster Club sponsored fund raising ac- tivities for BOSC and the outing club also received support from the Student Council and parents. The possibility of add- ing c ross-country A skiing to BOSC is something to look for- ward to in the future. Beekmantown's Senior Rock Chorus presently has twenty-five members and is still expanding. The talent and enthusiasm of these boys and girls is clearly dis- played in their perfor- mances, which include both vocal music and rock in- strumental background. 4 ' r Q G. ., I Q A sp. 5. The girls worked hard in all areas, including the balance beam, uneven parallel bars, vaulting horse and floor exercise. They encountered stiff competition from the other teams, each of which were more experienced than Beekmantown's. Sue Ashline and Terry Goslow were the only two seniors on the team. Accord- ing to Mrs. Lunn, their coach. Christie Casey was the best all-around gym- nast. As the team gains experience they will soon join the ranks of the winning and competitive teams from Eagle Coun- try. After three straight championships, the loss of several key players through graduation forced a major rebuilding effort. The Eagles were a young team, with many outstanding junior players. Sophomore Roger Desroches led the team in scoring with ten touchdowns. Brian Foster, Tim Rock and Mike Bar- ber also had outstanding seasons. Beekmantown had quarterback confusion this year. First, the leading candidate for first string, Jeff Snyder, transferred out of the area. Then, early in the season, Junior George Dye cracked his collar bone. Taking his place. Senior Mike Rab deau and Junior Jim Sears alternated in the QB spot. The loyal fans of Beekmantown may have been disappointe in the years outcome, but.are looking forward to next seasor Senior standouts Rick Foggy Foster, Rodney Gregoire Mike Rabideau, Albert LaVigne and Dave Debyah will b missed. The boys lost key games to Plattsburgh and Saranac, but beat everyone else in the league giving them a 6-2 record for the season. Sophomore Tom Botten was the team's leading scor- er. Linebacker Mike Gregoire also did an outstanding job, and was promoted to the Varsity team during the season. Coach Mousseau felt that the team lost a top-notch player when John Seabron was injured ear- ly in the season. Though many of the players will be on the Varsity team next year, we should have a strong JV team once again. Then they can get started on their own win streak. I . JUNIOR VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY This year the Junior Varsity Field Hockey team won the league championship for the third con- secutive season. With a 6-1 re- cord the J.V.'s had a great year. Goalie Arleen Reyell, supported by a strong defense, had seven shut-outs, including the cham- pionship game. Sophomore Jan Traynor led the team in scoring. The team was young, with ten juniors and only four seniors. Only Tom Renadette, Jon Denny, Dan Bijeau, Mark Dupell and Tim Rock had previous Varsity experience. The team had very close games with both St. John's and Plattsburgh High School. The Eagles revenged a three point loss to the Irish with a late season 'six'point win on the home court. Towering over their teammates, and many of their opponents, Scott Wilfore and Tim Rock led the team in scoring. Team Co-captains were Tom Renadette and Tim Rock. O' . Mark Wilfore -S Q ' 1. El Q .T Q ig SKATERS HAVE ROUGH SEASON IN 1978 PLAY The Hockey team had a rough season this year. Despite the efforts of defenseman Charles Hagar and goalies Mike Higgins and Mark Turner, the team finished the season with a disappointing 5-1-12 record. The Eagles' Mike Crimi, Dale Rahn and Jerry Coupal were among the Ieague's top ten scorer's. In their only game of the sectionals, against Northeast Clinton, the Eagles found themselves in perhaps the hardest fought game of the season, but lost 3-1. .... f- f Mike crimi i Jim Hager Ron Rockwall scores GIRLl'S BASKETBALL As the 1978 Crest went to the publisher in March, the girls JV basketball team looked very strong. With Lisa Wilfore's strong scoring and 'a very strong defense led by Lisa Light, the girls had a 7-2 record by March 1. Though the team will be losing many sophomores, the JV team next year should keep up the fine showing. However, the JV's loss is the Varsity's gain. We look forward to a winning season next year. More than halfway through their season, the Varsity Girls Basketball team is showing their winning style. As this is written they have seven wins and four losses in league competition. Their losses have all been in very competitive games settled by very small margins. Mrs. Denny, Beekmantown's coach, places a great deal of emphasis on teamwork. Ear- ly in the season, no one girl dominated the scoring. The JV team had a 5-7 record for the season. Lisa Light had and Mary Hutchins was high scorer. ff' Tl an outstanding season, BOWLING Beekmantown's Bowling team maintained its tra- ditional status with a fine 1978 season. Zi. x Q Vi' This year BOCES has a total of 70 participants from the Beekmantown district. The courses of- fered in BOCES are designed to educate the stu- dents in special areas such as auto mechanics, cosmetology, and printing. The BOCES program has been sucessful over the years in helping pre- pare students for their chosen vocations. The ad- vantage of BOCES is that it offers students the opportunity of preparing themselves for a career while attending high school. ESEHWIQERS3 Q9 5 SXOFXQ73 X The class of 1978 will long be remembered for their energy and undying will to keep on going when the going got tough. Through the football season and the basketball season, Beekmantown's senior class was always there to cheer the eagles on. Beekmantown's senior class is graduating with a North Country Scholar, Carolyn Golden. This award hasn't been presented to Beekmantown in years. The senior class is also the lst class to graduate that went through 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade entirely on split session. Q. R JQDI. There never seems to be enough time to do the things you want to do once you find them . . The combination of tedious work and cooperation that went into the preparation of last year's Junior Prom was certainly well worth the effort. Decorated to the theme, Time in a Bottle, the Elk's Club provided a romantic atmosphere, where everyone danced to the music provided by Solar Energy. Held on May 21, the unusually warm and summery May night added to everyone's enthusiasm, and en- abled the fun to extend far beyond the twilight hours. Rodney Gregoire and Sandi Leege were paid their proper royal respects as they were crowned King and Queen, while Bill Maxwell and Wendy Nichols humbly accepted the honor of being chosen prince and princess. The Class of 1978 is unique in that it has the first court boasting of 26 members, which is unquestionably a reflection on the class itself. Con- gratulations to everyone for a very successful and memorable event. N X What happens when a mysterious phantom disrupts the solitude of Shropsl Manor and poses as a threat to the heiress of the Shropshire fortune? To the case of the mysterious phantom, the best-known detectives are called in --Kojacket, CharIie's Devils, Borotta, and Able, a Sung Ku fanatic. This ness was the 1978 Senior Play, presented March 17th and 18th before biggest and most enthusiastic audience ever. Special recognition goes to Waugh, who was faculty advisor and director of the production. 1 l A ,' , 4 ,lfyf U4 liefgl-11-6 , :Q 52131 Ni P 4 f. fi. . n.. .
