afiv al flv ar Svciefy NNTIONAL HONOR SOCSETY FIRST ROW: Patricia Glasgow, Jeanne Wattie. SECOND ROW: John Farewell, Sally Stevens, Elaine Babcock, Mrs. Johanna Wiener. In 1959, the Applegarth Chapter of the National Honor Society was organized at B.C.S. The name, Apple- garth, was chosen in view of the fact that the land on which our school stands was formerly known as the Apple- garth estate. At that time it was owned by the late John Rea, who was an influential and respected resident of Beekmantown. In March of 1959, under the sponsorship of the P.T.A. , the first induction ceremony of the National Honor Society was held. Three juniors, John Farewell, Patricia Glasgow, and Sally Stevens were chosen as Charter members. Now that the membership of the society has grown, the members are more fully able to realize their goal of stimulating scholarship, leadership, character and service in the students of Beekmantown. To further enthusiasm for scholarship, the Society has begun a monthly seminar at which various speakers relate the interesting facets of various professions. It has also presented awards to outstanding students in various fields of achievement. In keeping with the ideal of service to the school, members of the Society have dis- played educational material on certain of the school's bulletin boards. It is the hope of the members of the National Honor Society that they may continue to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership and to encourage the develop- ment of character in pupils of Beekmantown Central School.
