'W' Q XT, it A Index N EWS A great deal happens in the course of a year, internationally, na- tionally and locally. 1981 witnessed many newsworthy events, some of them favorable and others not, from assassinations and assassination attempts to the flight of the space shuttle Columbia to uprisings in Poland and El Salvador. America has contracted game fever in epidemic proportions and the Rubik's Cube Syn- drome has swept the nation. In the fashion world, designer clothing has not yet lost its appeal. 1982 is witnessing the revival of hats and heroism, and with the struggling economy, a new wave ol Americanism. While great events in history are being recorded every day, the American still cherishes his liberty and his right to love that liberty, whether it be by accomplishing a feat of valor, wearing designer jeans, or challenging himself to a game of Space Invaders. 12 Feature America witnessed a revival of heroism last January when an Air Florida 737 crashed intc Washington D.C.'s 14th Street bridge less than thirty seconds after take-off. In the icy, dark Potomac river, an unknown man gave his life to save others anc Lenard Skutnik, a federal worker watching the rescue efforts, dove in the foreboding water to rescue 2 women unable to grasp lifelines thrown to her. Deeds such as these evoke a deep affection for heroes, as well as renew faith in the goodness of humanity America abounds with heroes, both known anc unknown, who represent the best of the human spirit Their acts of valor deserve the respect and apprecia- , tion of all - the persons they saved could have beer l any one of us. 22 ' World 1981 seemed plagued with problems on the worlc scene: Assassinations and assassination attempts abounded, resulting in the hospitalization of Unitec States President Ronald Reagan and Pope John Pau ll, and the death of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat On December 13, 1981, General Wojeiech Jaruzelsk imposed martial law on the people of Poland. His officials and sympathizers of the independent trade union Solidarity, including -Solidarity leader Lecl' Walesa, Time magainze's Man of the Year. While Poland struggles to regain her foothold, El Salvadol grapples in a civil war that has raised serious questionf concerning the use of American arms.
