America has contracted game fever in epidemic proportions and the Rubik's Cube Syn- drome has swept the nation. In the fashion world, designer clothing has not yet lost its appeal. 1982 is witnessing the revival of hats and heroism, and with the struggling economy, a new wave ol Americanism. While great events in history are being recorded every day, the American still cherishes his liberty and his right to love that liberty, whether it be by accomplishing a feat of valor, wearing designer jeans, or challenging himself to a game of Space Invaders. 12 Feature America witnessed a revival of heroism last January when an Air Florida 737 crashed intc Washington D.C.'s 14th Street bridge less than thirty seconds after take-off. In the icy, dark Potomac river, an unknown man gave his life to save others anc Lenard Skutnik, a federal worker watching the rescue efforts, dove in the foreboding water to rescue 2 women unable to grasp lifelines thrown to her. Deeds such as these evoke a deep affection for heroes, as well as renew faith in the goodness of humanity America abounds with heroes, both known anc unknown, who represent the best of the human spirit Their acts of valor deserve the respect and apprecia- , tion of all - the persons they saved could have beer l any one of us. 22 ' World 1981 seemed plagued with problems on the worlc scene: Assassinations and assassination attempts abounded, resulting in the hospitalization of Unitec States President Ronald Reagan and Pope John Pau ll, and the death of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat On December 13, 1981, General Wojeiech Jaruzelsk imposed martial law on the people of Poland. J I., 58 People To find a myriad of tastes, styles, fashions and personalities, one needs look no further than Beechcroft. The taste, style and fashion found at Beechcroft are the same throughout the nation. America still loves a hamburger and Mom's apple pie will always bring a compliment. While eating out has become almost a delicacy due to the tight economy, restaurants featuring foreign cusine flourish, particularly in the Columbus area where many such restaurants abound. The clothing trends has not changed dramatically since last year: designer jeans, for instance, are still very popular. The preppy look is now just taken for granted. Blazers and cowboy boots are in, and lace has returned full force in almost all styles of women's fashions. As for personality and people, the two are inseparable among the crowd at Beechcroft. One need only look in the hallway, a classroom, an of- fice, or a lunchroom to find any character ever dreamed of. He will probably even find some of the most beautiful per- sonages the world has ever seen. 82 Entertainment American's newest favorite pastime is playing games. Not the standard board games, but games that involve in- telligence, logic, a quick eye, coordina- tion, and most of them anyway, a great deal of spare time - that is if one wants to excel at them. The game craze began on two distinct waves, one with Rubik's Cube which was proceeded by other geometric facsimiles and logic games such as the Missing Link, and the other with electronic video games. Space ln- vaders captured the hands and eyes of millions of Americans, and is now only one member of a very large family. Brothers and sisters include Pac Man, Ms. Pac Man, Asteroids, Defender, Cen- tipede, and Munchies. Who plays all these electronic marvels? Everyone! Anyone who has not challenged the missiles of a Space lnvader or the hungry mouth of a Pac Man has surely attempted Rubik's Cube - at least picked one up to take a few turns, and a few more there is something irresistable about that cube 9 FALL .Maven id unaQr our gef ad ufeffad over our Aeacfd .Muff tzalfiaf .mfedll WA-4 HI Cash. ,s,' ' 1 fax K' ghd: M..-YP Q.- YXSUBAR L N n 3 1 sf fagf are agic ,ff For five days, preparing for Homecoming is a way of life at Beechcroft. The busy week is marked by choos- ing the top five candidates, arranging dinner reserva- tions, ordering flowers, decorating cars, and filling in those last minute details. Beechcroft became an arena of tension, excitement, and anticipation - all in waiting for the big moment. That magic moment finally came, and as the magnetism in the air seemed to reach its breaking point, Student Council President Charley Moushey made the grand announcement: And your 1981-82 Homecoming Queen - Anne Brown! The evening continued to be one of high spirits and exuberance as the Cougars proudly defeated the Centennial Stars in a smashing 38-6 vic- tory. The evening, which was blessed with fine weather as well as winning enthusiam, bestowed its unparallel- ed fervor onto the following night at Beechcroft's fourth annual Homecoming Dance. The band Streetplayers highlighted the evening with excellent numbers and played the theme Endless Love during the traditional spotlight dance of the queen and her escort. To many observers, the 1981-82 Homecoming festivities will be long remembered as one of the most thrilling events of the year. 13 F I '38, in ,gush ,N 8 fixwgkf S' ,,1k v , , LM . The Cougars slid by the Linden Panthers 7-O, and a lot of work had to be done before the Cougars could go to the Puncher stadium. Playing in the game which was the City League North decider, the Cougars went in with con- fidence. lt was a very physical game, but the Cougars were shown at their best. Their win- ning score was 22-12. The East game was more of a fumble bowl, but again the Cougars were victorious. The Cougars went on to defeat Centennial C38-65 and their Northland rival Q19-145, giving Beechcroft their first undisputed championship and capping their season with an 8-2, 7-O record. The Reserve Football team also played superbly and won the city league division championship. The Cougars had now won their right to play at Franklin County Stadium on the funny grass, as Mr. Powell called it. The Cougars had expected to play Eastmoor but Eastmoor qualified for the State Playoffs. As a result, the Cougars played the Walnut Ridge Scots. At the beginning of the second half Beechcroft scored twice, making the score 48- O. The Scots scored on their final possession, and the final score was 48-8. The Cougars rolled up 429 total offensive yards, and the defense played very wen holding the scots to 123 total yards and forcing six turnovers. Band members and spectators grew to love their rendi- tions of such musical favorites as lt's Still Rock and Roll to me , Armed Forces Salute , Hello Dolly , and Hit Me With Your Best Shot. These spirited Cougars loved to plan half-time surprises. During the homecoming half-time show they formed the famous Script Cougars. The night of the great Northland game brought even greater thrills. A rented plane circled the Northland High School football stadium bearing the decree Go Cougars . . . Maul Vikings. The excitement of this event was only surpassed by the events of the following weekend when these talented Cougars marched across the astroturf of Franklin County Stadium and helped to declare Beechcroft High School Co-City League Champions. The fame of these Cougar entertainers has brought them many opportunities to perform. This past year they participated in the Fourth of July, Columbus Day, Halloween and Cedar Point parades, the Pumpkin Festival, and Otterbein Band Day. Cougar fans were anxiously waiting for the fourth annual Powder Puff game to commence. lt was a cold, blustery day, but that didn't stop the devoted fans from filling the stadium. With the kick off, the battle between the Junior and Senior girls began. The first successful scoring drive was accomplished by the Seniors when Dawn Lewis put six points on the board early in the second quarter. The Seniors later scored eight more points, making the halftime score 14-O. During halftime there were many activities, most of which were performed by the male cheerleaders who really outdid themselves. They displayed signs, and erected a pyramid. The Junior cheerleaders spelled out their class name on the field. Then came the main event, the crowning of the Powder Puff King. The candidates were Scott Erdy, Jim Hunts- berger, Curt Metzger, and Charlie Moushey, Wayne Pounds, and Joe Stanford. The winner was Joe Stanford, escorted by Kellie Nagel. After halftime, both teams were ready to resume combat. The Juniors received the ball first, but were unable to penetrate the Senior defenses. When the Seniors finally regained possession of the ball, there was no stopping them. Cougar excellence has been achieved in many areas. Principal Robert H. Bieber expressed pride in Beechcroft's accomplishments, The opening of our 1981-1982 school year went very smoothly especially with the help of much parent and teacher support. This support was particularly exemplified by the com- munity and its concern for future education. As a result, the school levy was passed. Mr. Bieber happily recognized great Cougar spirit and unity. He felt the Senior Class of 1982 was responsible for much of the positive school spirit that was felt and enjoyed by all. The fall bonfire was only one great expression of this rallying unity. School spirit was also intensified by the victory of the sports teams. The Cougar Golf Team won the City League Championship , it uvff All lQoLerf gieLer principaf , Wifdr garne5 Mae principa! ' nbert lil. ' ieber title while the Cougar Football Team was Co-Champion for the city title. The spirit of a school is also manifested through academic successes. ln order for a school to fulfill its obliga- tions to society, its spirit must include academic motivation. Skill and assurance are an invincible combina- tion. Mr. Bieber feels that the Beechcroft faculty is second to none. His positive reinforcement of their perfor- mance encourages them to motivate the students. This dual motivation allows the teacher to perceive the stu- dent as an individual. Personal student conferences, workshops, student achievements, and teacher-student ac- tivities are ways that Beechcroft faculty members say, We care about you. This cyclic effect has helped to ad- vance skill development and personal assurance for many Beechcroft students. :J 6 f yaclf u ,J 1 'MM principaf geuerfy jafig ,wee principa! hi! She was the 1979 RRCA Athlete of the year in her age group, a member of the Junior U.S.A. team in 1980, and a Juniors National Champ in the 3000 meters run in 1980. Her most cherished ac- complishment was winning the Women's National Cross Country Championships at ages 9, 11, 12, and 13. Laura has been running competitively for 12 years. She runs 40-50 miles a week and lifts weights three times a week. What she enjoys most about running is the self-satisfaction it deliversg the working hard for something and have it pay off. Boxing King Darrin Allen started boxing at age ten and since then has come to feel good about himself. Darrin feels that through boxing he has gained much respect from his friends and the public. The musical numbers included performances from the Ensemble, the Jazz Band, Magic Con- nection, Feedback, and the Alumni Band. The Beechboys entertained the audience with their delightfully unique choreography to the 'Best of the Beach Boys medley. The antics of the Beechboys were contrasted by the more serious tone set by the five vocal and piano acts. Among the other acts were a humorous skit by C. Glenn and B. Pospichel and a monologue by J. Beechcroft has felt the undeniable presence of spirit that this class has shown by maintaining the old class traditions as well as beginning many new ones. Some of the old traditions the class upheld included the painting of the Cougar wall, the Senior Breakfast and Dinner, Powder Puff, Spirit Days, the Senior- faculty basketball game, and the Senior Prom. All of these events were very successful in that the majority of the class participated and all shared in their enjoyment of the Cougar spirit. Besides maintaining old traditions, the Class of '82 further demonstrated its school spirit by its perseverance, dedication, and hard work to initiate several new traditions. The class sold Popcorn Fritters, and held a car wash and a newspaper drive to earn enough money to not only sponsor other class ac- tivities, but to also present a gift to the school. After several months of hard work and dedication, the class proudly presented the sign, Beechcroft High School, to Mr. Bieber, which now graces the front of the building. In addition to this gift, the class held an out- door pep rally, the highlight of which was a bonfire. The bonfire brought together students, teachers, friends, and family to share in the excitement of the festivities. The class was very excited about the enrollment and friendship of George Tibble. Even though no one has seen him or spoken with him, he has provided many laughs and has engendered class spirit. To raise the S1400 needed for this project, Seniors sponsored a Powder Puff football game and sold more than 100 cases of popcorn fritters. As a result of this combined Senior effort, on January 25, 1982, three bold words were added to the front of the building: BEECHCROFT HIGH SCHOOL. I Q i 1 la.. K ' I , -if I l I 7 On May 22nd the senior class was rewarded for all of its efforts by producing a beautiful Senior Prom. Weeks of preparation required the hard work of many juniors and seniors. There were invitations to write, balloons to be blown up and cotton clouds to be pasted together. However, everyone knew that the time had been well spent when they arrived at the beautifully decorated OSU Ballroom. Festivities were halted momentarily when the windy, rainy weather changed to a tornado warning. Couples were advised to retreat to the basement for safety's sake, but most of them decided that they would rather just continue to have a good time. The band Energy was one of the highlights of the prom. Besides providing great dance music throughout the evening, Energy also accompanied a very energetic rendition of New York, New York sung by our own Mr. Jeffrey D. Higham. At the beginning of the evening, couples gathered around the punch bowl and voted for the very special pair whom they felt should be Prom King and Queen. At 10:30, a hush fell over the ballroom as the results were announced. Everyone agreed that Theresa Meyer and Charlie Moushey were one of the most attractive couples to ever be crowned at a Beechcroft prom. By the time the ballroom was finally cleared of seniors and the industrious juniors had taken over to clean up, it was a well known fact that the Beechcroft seniors of 1982 had experienced the best senior prom in the city of Columbus. While we were waiting for the ceremony to begin, it seemed as though we were anticipating an outstanding pro- duction. It was not until we were actually walking down the aisles to the sound of Pomp and Circumstance that we fully realized that we were the showmen play- ing to an audience of parents, teachers, relatives and friends. Some of these recognitions come in the form of special seminars. Beechcroft students have always been very successful in competing for these awards. This year was no exception. Juniors Beth Sandham and Frank Green won the opportunity to attend the national con- vention of Freedoms Foundation held at Valley Forge, Pa. Theresa Wharton represented Beechcroft at the Hugh O'Brien Leadership Conference. Students John Gallagher and Debbie Slocumb were exposed to successful businessmen and special seminars concerning the business world at Camp Enterprise. Outstanding juniors Mike Dawdy, Todd Carpenter, Camilla Oh, Robin DeWalt, and Chris Loscko spent a week involved in activities concerning the American government system at Boys' and Girls' State. William Mulligan, a National Merit Com- mended Scholar, was awarded a scholarship to attend a summer convention at the Martin Essex School for the Gifted. 202 VZ?
