Lori Helweg reins as queen while Deb- bie McMorrow, jenny Whitlock, Toby Foreman, Patti Allen, Elaine Bogard, Linda Trout, Diane Deane, and Jana Frye were the other candidates up for queen. As everyone looked through the Yearbook Desire provided the music. Yearbook Dance 23 Queen Debbie presides over 2 3 ?. .4 Homecoming activities 1 'H ff, A '4'f,'i,l 1' ,SW Though it was a dissappointing night for all because of the Hornet's loss to the Woodmen, the homecoming was also an exciting, happy night. The Soph- omores showed their spirit by winning the float competition with Buzz the Woodmenn as their theme. Later, at the dance while Hot Ice provided the music, Cary Raker and Debbie McMorrow received the honors of king and queen. Other King candidates were Tom Gaither, Steve Dudley, john Hill, Randy Males. Other candidates for queen were Lori Helweg, Karen In- man, Kathy Sweetman, Donna Doughty. The Queen's Court was composed of, junior, Toby Foreman, sophomore, julie McMorrow, and freshman, Diane Deane. In meet competition, the Harriers managed to beat Wood and Greenfield. While this is not out- standing, it does stand as the record of a years work. In the record de- partment, the Grove Tennisers were not in the county chase but in the work department, they were surely ahead of their director. Under second year Coach Mel F icklin, the team was paced by outstanding Seniors Dave Spear and jeff Agal. However, acking in depth and experience, the Homets often battled in what some would call a losing cause, yet in each in- stance the Hornets became older and wiser. Lead by outstanding senior and C.S.A.C. champ, Eddie Read, the young Homets copped 9 wins while losing only 4 times in dual meet competition. The grap- plers also won the Pike Invitational and placed 4th in the always tough county, and 3rd in both the C.S.A.C. Confer- ence and the Sectional. County champ, Mike Cruse, was just one of the many underclassmen who won toumey places during the long season, as this year's Wrestling Hornets featured 7 sophs, 6 juniors, and only 1 senior. X Wrestling Reserves and Freshman Add to BG,s shining Wrestling star In wrestling, there is no real dis- tinction between Varsity, Reserves, and Freshmen, all work, all suffer, and all receive the feeling of pride that comes with being a Beech Grove wrestler. The 9th grade grapplers compiled a 7 win 6 loss record and captured the super tough Stoneybrook Tourney. Out- standing young wrestlers were Randy Hood, Brad johnson, Brian Fallowfield, Doud Lemond, Tom Souert, Richard Harvey, and County champ john Whiteside. The diamondmen of Coaches Cambrel and Workman, were always in the contest against some of the toughest teams in the metro area. Led by senior outfielder Mike Short, the team had a record which did not re- flect their true talent. Young team led by mostly Fresh- men and Sophomores was not success- ful in the won-lost column but they did gain much needed experience for the future. This years' squad was coached by lst year man George Porter. His knowledge and skill were of great assis- tance to all the boys. Coach Ferkins' girls bounced to an 8-6 dual meet record. This was only accom- plished with lots of cooperation and teamwork from all of the girls involved. When sectional rolled around the Beech Grove girls rose to the occasion by winning their second sectional in three years. Cirls Tracksters Show Promise And Desire In the second year for girls track the early tumout was high but as injuries and time took their toll the number of girl thinclads dwindled to ten. High- lights of the year were usually those of the hardrunning sprinter Cindy Strack, however with the advent of a new track and field facility the girls program will look to the future with hope and new spirit. 'K-as g Behind Every Good Athlete Stands A Strong Proud Girl Have a school your team will be proud of. That's the job of the cheer- leaders and wrestler-etts of Beech Grove. No matter what their mood or what the odds are, they must keep the school spirit up to the very last second. This isn't the only job of the girls. Both groups work at money making projects to buy their unifomms. The cheerleaders work not only during season, but must work in the summer by going to camp. They sell favors at sectionals time and decorate the boys lockers before games. The wrestler-etts help with home meets by keeping score, washing mats, nmning errands and cheering. The co-editors for the Beech Leaf this year were Bev Statzer and jeff Gill. Ioumalism I classes give the stu- dents an opportunity to voice their feel- ings through letters to the editor and opinion polls. Brodie, B. Music Moves The World At B G H S This year the Choral Department was led by Miss janet Flasch. Choirs con- sisted of the 9th grade girls choir and the Concert choir. The Jubil-aires being the public relations group of the high school made many appearances throughout the city, including perfor- mances at the Beacon and several for nursing homes and clubs. All the choirs combined went to the Beech Grove Iu- nior High School in late April to per- form for underclassmen. The purpose of this was to arouse interest of younger students so that when they will know if they would like to participate in the Choral Department. This is important for the hand because this not only involves Beech Grove High School, but all the other High Schools throughout Central Indiana. The band also marched at Martinsville and showed their colors at the Arena dedica- tion. Ability and talent was shown through the concert season. N Exploratory Teaching is a class that is open to any Senior who is wishing to major in Education in college and who has at least a C average. Under the di- rection of Mrs. joyce, they leamed about different levels of teaching. They then choose a grade that they might like to teach and help with the class. They make reports on the different things that they teach their class. They also have the opportunity to go to the ju- nior High the second semester. The Library Assistants provide the much needed help by working at the desk to assist students needing help in finding something. They file all the books being checked back in and help the students by getting back issues of magazines for them. Library assistants is a course that you can take to receive a 'A credit per year.
