The Class of 1962 Presents ' ' The Hornet ' ' r y i Beech Grove High School Beech Grove, Indiana Foreword We hope that this yearbook will help you recall many of your high school memories now and in the years to come. We have endeav- ored to include pictures and descriptions of all the important activities that have taken place during the year. We would like to thank our sponsors, Mrs. Ruth Rugenstein and Mr. E. H. Fairchild, for their help and encouragement in preparing the annual for publication. HT- Table of Contents V ' :J- Administration ' Activities Sports Faculty Individuals Dedication We, the Class of 1962, sincerely dedicate this yearbook to our friend and guidance counselor, Mr. Hubert E. Nickels in recognition of his devoted service to our school and our personal welfare. Administration Mr. J. E. Bales, assumed the position of Superintendent of Beech Grove Schools July 1, 1959. He holds membership in many professional organizations and is very active civically. Mr. O. L. Von Horn, our principal, began his career at Beech Grove High School in 1930 as a member of the faculty. Mr. H. E. Nickels, Vice Principal, also has had much school experience. He assists the teachers in the guidance of our students. mw PRINCIPAL O. L. VAN HORN VICE PRINCIPAL H. E. NICKELS Mr. Steele Roberts efficiently performs his duties as Junior High Principal. Below, our school secretaries. Miss Patty Davidson, secretary to Mr. Van Horn and manager of the bookstore, and Miss Alma Cripe, secretary to Mr. Bales and to the Board of Education, have a friendly welcome and a cheery smile for everyone. JR. HIGH PRINCIPAL, O. S. ROBERTS PATTY DAVIDSON, SECRETARY ALMA CRIPE, SECRETARY School Can Be Fun Members of Miss Bixler ' s clothing class were busy sewing at the time the picture was snapped. At the machines are Judy Brown, Mary Kay Craig, and Jennifer DeBurger. Shorthand is a favorite subject of these senior girls in Mr. Fairchild ' s class. Many of these girls are pre- paring to go into clerical and secre- tarial work. Physics is an interesting subject to this group of senior boys. It prepares them for more advanced work which they may encounter in college. Supervising the work is Mr. Rankin. « Mr. Grant is very popular with all of his students. He teaches the junior high and senior bands, the concert choir, and the mixed choir. In this photo, the concert choir is paying close attention as he brings them up and down the scale. Girls in Miss Mann ' s cooking classes are shown sampling results of their cooking. Students in these classes learn how to be- come better cooks and housewives. Members of Mr. Young ' s gym class would rather play games than do calisthenics, but exercise is a vital part of the physical edu- cation program. Junior Hi-Lites Getting class rings is a big moment in any junior ' s life. Bev Totty and Jim Hensley are shown casting admiring glances at theirs. An annual project of the junior class is the magazine sales campaign. Prizes were awarded to the top three sales- men, shown here assisting Miss Weaver with the bookkeeping. As top salesman, Karel Van Horn (left) received a $30 cash prize. As runners-up, Mary Blazek (right) won a transistor radio, and Don- na Patrick, a wrist watch. Juniors played a major role in many of the school clubs. Here they are with the foreign language group at the Spanish-Latin Club party. College Night The College Night program, an impor- tant event in the school year, brings representatives from various colleges across the state to discuss college plans with Beech Grove students. Here are two representatives, one from Cen- tral Business College (at the upper left) and the other from Indiana Cen- tral College. They are shown talking to prospective college students. Yearbook Staff The industrious yearbook staff consisted of all seniors who were chosen at the beginning of the year. Members were, first row; Linda Pflonzer, opening division editor; Bob Messer, sports division editor; Karen Dai ley, editor; Ron Tin ley, assistant editor; Richard Meier, individuals division editor; and Jim Johnson, activities division editor. The staff took many things into consideration when choosing the cover for their year- book. Here is Mr. Butherus of the Inter-Collegiate Press displaying sample covers to the staff. . ,- J The yearbook staff worked all year to make this yearbook a success. Shown in their work- shop are: Mike Williams, Jim Johnson, Bill Schoenbachler, Ron Tinley, Richard Meier, Mrs. Rugenstein, sponsor. Bob Mes- ser, and John Schaffer. Also assisting were Donna Patrick, Nancy Clark, Nancy Toney, Sue Ridlen, Sue Allbright, and Teresa Walker. An important part of the success of a yearbook is based on the salesmen. John Schaffer was chief salesman this year. He is shown demonstrating high- pressuring methods to Peggy Zavodny and Rusty Mitchell of his sales staff. Other members of his staff were Lin- da Jetmore, Jim Smith, and Mel Marie Haboush. Student Council The Student Council was first organized in 1947. Its goal is to create and maintain school spirit, and to strengthen the good relationship between faculty and students. Besides the numerous pep sessions each year, the council an- nually sponsors the Homecoming parade and dance, the Christmas painting con- tests and the cheerleader elections. This year ' s council succeeded in creating and stimulating a tremendous amount of school spirit within the student body. After their spirited play in the season opener and a certain drill Coach Johnson devised, the team was christened the Banzai Bandits by Coach Leffler. Year after year coaches do a tremendous job, frequently taking inexperienced boys and molding them into a fine team. The squad holds a great amount of admiration and respect for these leaders. In the third game the team suffered their first defeat at the hands of arch rival Franklin Central. The squad returned to its winning ways with an 18-0 victory over the Deaf School Orioles. The next three contests matched Johnson ' s crew against the top powers in the county, all undefeated. Against the Pike Red Devils, the Hornets trailed 19-0 at half time; but the Banzai Boys then banzaied their way through the best 24 minutes of football they had ever played and the game ended in a 26-26 tie. The following Friday night Beech Grove traveled to Lawrence. The county champion Bears took it 31-6. In the mud at Speedway the Hornets lost a second squeaker to the Plugs 17-13. In their eighth gome the team again failed to put together a full 48-minute effort. With one minute, eight seconds left on the clock, an eighty-yard kickoff return ruined the squad ' s hopes for a winning season. The score at the gun stood at 20-18. The Hornet Harriers went on to win a dual meet with Sacred Heart 36-22; topped the regular season with a victory in a triangular meet with Franklin Central, and Carmel; and once again defeated Franklin in a dual meet 41-17. The Hornets were second in the Capital District Conference meet. In the County, they were fourth of ten, and in the Sectional, twelfth of thirty. Once again Coach Boyd has put togeth- er a winning team, one with a record of five wins and three losses in the regular season. The 1961-62 Basketball season was one of innovations and success. The team was coached by Mike Leffler, who after com- ing to Beech Grove from Turkey Run High School, led the Hornet cagers to their first winning season in recent years. The Hornets started the season on a sour note by dropping their opener to Carmel 60-35. However, the team bounced right back by handing Decatur Central a 63-52 defeat. The Hornet five continued on the vic- tory trail with a 60-52 victory over Cen- ter Grove. It was not until the squad met a powerful team from Wood High School that the home fans realized what a fine team we had. In a photo-finish thriller Beech Grove defeated Wood 47- 44. The next two teams to be defeated by the Hornets were Deaf School 78-31, and Triton 68-53. The team dropped the next game to Pike 71-73. As the season progressed, the Hornets became one of the few teams to beat Speedway. We then lost to Whiteland 53-68, defeated Lawrence Central 57-51, and Arlington 72-67. In the county tournament the Hornets de- feated Lawrence Central 57-51, and lost to Southport. The Hornets lost the next three to Sacred Heart, Hancock Central, and Greenwood. Then came the highlight of the season. Leffler ' s Hornets defeated previously-undefeated Franklin Central 56-55 in a double overtime. The team began the season by downing Greenwood 29-21. They dropped their next two to Franklin and Decatur Central. The Hornets bounced back to whip Hancock Central 35 - 20. They were then tripped up by Lawrence Central, beat Carmel 29 - 19, and dropped their next to Pike in a squeaker 25 - 24. Toward the season ' s close the Hornets ran over all their competition to finish undefeated in the last five matches. The victories included wins over Sacred Heart, the School for the Blind, Indiana School for the Deaf, Greenfield, and Mooresville. Some of the top scorers were: Mike Bourff with a 16-3 1 record; Gary Schwomeyer with a 13-5-3 record; Don Lewis with an 11-5, and Dick Irwin with a 10-6 season mark. Hunter chalked up a new school record in the highs with a 16.0, while Grever tied the school mark in the lows with a 21.5. Records fell like a card house under the attack of Hornet runners. John Schaffer virtually shattered the half mile mark with a 2:06.6 jaunt at the Capital Dis- trict Conference meet at Deaf School. Charlie Taylor sails over the pole vault bar. Roy Thomas glides over the high jump bar while Woody Marschke awaits his turn. Track The 1962 Hornet track team chalked a successful season despite an overall season record of 4 wins and 5 losses. In all, three school records were broken or tied. Schaffer broke the half mile mark, Mike Hunter the high hurdle time, and Don Grever tied the low hurdle record. Before the actual start of the season, the team traveled to Bloomington to com- pete in the Hoosier Relays, competing against scores of teams from all over the state. The Hornets brought back several medals. Of ten schools Beech Grove placed fourth in the 4th annual North Central Relays. During the Capital District Conference meet at Deaf School, three school records were either broken or tied. The team ' s victories include wins over Sacred Heart, Deaf School, Decatur Central, and Green- wood. Throughout the season the team was hurt by injuries. In the Hoosier Relays Bob Messer, a two-year letter man in the sprints, tore a muscle and was out for the bulk of the season. This year marked the last year for Coach Wendell Boyd.
