INDIANA EDITOR Bob Leaman ASSISTANT EDITORS Donna Cunningham, Darlene Lawson SPORTS Charlie Gearhart, Jan Elliott, Duncan Murdoch SALES Billie Ashburn, Frances King, Donna Cunningham John Brown, Bill Messer, Martha Lukenbill THIS BOOK IS A PICTURE-STORY OF T956-'I957 AT BGHS FOREWORD Publication of this year's yearbook marks several firsts which we are innovating with the fond hope that they will prove of enough value to become permanent features of future yearbooks of Beech Grove High School. Most important change is the inclusion of the full year's activities, of necessity causing later delivery of our book, which we hope will be com- pensated for by a more complete record of the year's significant events. We have made an attempt to improve the quality of the book by converting our publication to linotype from the cheaper, lower-quality IBM type pre- viously used. It is signature-sewed instead of side-sewed, allowing the pages to lie flat when opened. These two improvements we have been able to afford due to the lower price the publishing company gave us for accepting summer delivery. Finally, we have chosen the name THE i957 HORNET in the sincere hope that future classes will perpetuate it and thereby estab- lish a lasting identity for Beech Grove High School yearbooks. TABLE of CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION TEACHERS SENIORS UNDERCLASSMEN ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS ODDEN DA AMONG OUR MANY FINE TEACHERS ARE THOSE SHOWN BELOW DE DI C A Tl ON Robert Johnson, Richard Brunoehler, Wayne Tippin, Steele Roberts, Wendell Boyd. Realizing the lasting benefits, both physical and mental, to be derived from a well-planned athletic program, we respectfully dedicate our year- book, THE l957 HORNET, to our varsity coaches, who have labored long and well for our school and community. THE CLASS OF i957 THESE ADMINISTRATORS AND ASSISTANTS DETERMINE AND Mr. Kinsey 'These men, under the capable guidance of Mr. C. V. Kinsey, determine the policy of the Beech Grove Schools. Membership on a school board is a community service of the highest type, practically without compensa- tion, and a task involving much work and little glory. Ordinarily, one school board member is appointed by the mayor and the city council each year, thereby keeping two experienced members in service ot all times. Members alternate among the various offices, serving one year in each capacity during their term. Mr. E. Lee Mendenhall, president of the school board, has served since l953. He is employed by the New York Central Railroad. Mr. Louis A. Lukenbill, the secretory, also was appointed in l953. He is the pub- Iisher of TH'E PERRY TOWNSHIP WEEKLY. Newest member of the board is Mr. John F. Johnson, the treasurer, who was appointed in 1955. Mr. Johnson is a civil service em- ployee with the Post Office Department. He served previously during the years l95l-53. MF Melldellllill Mr. Lukenbill Mr. Johnson DIRECT THE PROGRAM AND POLICIES OF OUR SCHOOL Principal O. L. Van Horn directs the activities of the faculty in carrying out the policies set by the school board and the superintendent. Among the many details of his work are planning the schedule of classes, assigning teachers to various extracurricular duties, checking attendance, and directing the athletic program. His office is always open to students and faculty members seek- ing guidance on school matters. Below are shown three administrative assistants of our school system who expedite the activities of the offices of the principal and superintendent. Mr. H. E. Nickels is vice-principal and guidance director, and as such is most helpful to students in selecting courses, deciding which college to attend, and in finding a job upon graduation. Miss Patricia Davidson assists Mr. Van Horn with the details of his office. Miss Alma Cripe is secretary to Mr. Kinsey and the school board. Of the 66 who began, 47 will receive their diplomas on June 6, l957. During the four years, we gained l5 others to bring the total number to 62, the largest graduating class in Beech Grove's history. Our freshman and sophomore years were spent in the old high school building, part of which no longer exists. We were well repre- sented on the Student Council in our freshman year by Bob Leaman, Donna Cunningham, and Charlie Gearhart. Yells for our freshman basketball team were led by cheerleaders Pat Chandler, Joann Russell, and Bob Lea- man. During our sophomoreyear Beech Grove had its undefeated County Champion football team. We were as proud of it as the upperclassmen. During the last year in the old school, our Student Council repre- sentatives were Donna Cunningham, Charlie Gearhart, and Billie Ashburn. ' Junior activities began with the annual magazine sale. Our'class sold a near record S2053.4l worth. Emily DeLay and Donna Cunningham were the magazine drive cap- tains, and Charlie Gearhart was the business manager. Bill Messer, Charles McHenry, and John' Brown led the class in sales. Junior class officers were Charlie Gearhart, presi- dent, Jan Elliott, vice-president, Jack Bates, secretary, and Bob Leaman, treasurer. Our Student Cou'ncil representatives were Donna Cunningham ,Charlie Gearhart, and Bob Lea- man. Donna was elected president of the Council. Frances King and Pat Johnson were varsity cheerleaders, and Martha Lukenbill was our Track. Queen for the County Meet. Highlight of our junior year was the Prom, which was preceded by many weeks of plan- ning and working. Le Soir a Paris lAn Eve- ning in Parisi was the theme for the affair held in the IBEW Hall oh May l9. Bert Julian provided the music. Almost all our class- mates worked to make the Prom one of th'e best ever held. Jan Elliott and Bob Leaman were chosen to represent Beech Grove last summer at Hoosier Boys' State. Darlene Law- son attended Girls' State. Senior class officers were Jan Elliott, president, Bill Schiefelbein, vice-president, Emily DeLay, secretary, and Charlie Gear- hart, treasurer. Student Council representa- tives were Charlie Gearhart, Darlene Lawson, and Jan Elliott. Charlie, a four-year member of the Council, was elected its president. During our senior year the first Beech Grove Teen Council was formed with two repre- sentatives from each class. Our representa- tives were Rodger Hall and Bob Leaman, who served as president. Bob Leaman was chosen to edit our annual, which we called The Hornet , hoping the name would be kept for all future yearbooks. Darlene Law- son and Donna Cunningham were elected assistant editors. Darlene was also elected by the newly-formed journalism class to serve as editor ofthe Beech Leaf. Another winning season was turned in by the football team, captained by Charlie Gearhart. Duncan Murdoch was chosen most valuable player. We will always remember the sectional performance of our senior-domi- nated basketball team, with Jan Elliott and Jerry Sare as co-captains. Our track team was also one of the best in many years. lt was captained by Jan Elliott. We presented the first senior play in many years, and it was a great success. Only twelve were in- the cast of A Little Honey , but many more worked backstage and on the various committees. During this year several of us received awards and honors. Billie Ashburn won the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow award after receiving the highest score on a test given to senior girls. Darlene Lawson was elected by the senior class and faculty to receive the DAR Good Citizen award. The Merle Sidener awards for outstanding work in journalism were given to Billie Ashburn and Bob Leaman. Pat Johnson was Beech Grove's County Track Queen, and Roberta Smith reigned as Queen of the Neewollah lHalloweenl Dance. Donna Cunningham and Bill Messer were chosen Miss and Mr. Beech Leaf. Elected rnost typical boy and girl were Art Sims and Pat Johnson. Pat Chandler was our queen in the Cleanest City Parade. Reigning as Emperor and Empress of the i957 Junior-Senior Prom were Rodger Hall and Julia Murley. Baccalaureate was held June 2 at 3:30 p.m. in the gymnasium. Reverend Wilson Singer of the Beech Grove Methodist Church was the speaker. Commencement on June 6 at 8:00 p.m. brought an end to our high school careers. Our valedictorian was Darlene Lawson, Charlie Gearhart was the saluta- torian. Other student speakers were Bill Mes- ser, Martha Lukenbill, and Donna Cunning- ham. As we go out into the world, to the factories, offices, the military service, or into the role of the homemaker, it is our wish that future classes may enjoy and profit from their high school days as we have. Class officers elected were Nick O'Neill, presidentg Kay Rohrberg, vice- president, Richie Ridpath, treasurer, Sharon Eibling, secretary, and Roger Smith, sergeant-at- arms. The magazine sales campaign, under the leadership of Miss Weaver, was organized and team captains selected. Kay Edwards was the chairman with Barbara Acton and Richie Ridpath as the team captains. Kay Rohrberg was the high- est salesman and received a radio. Roger Smith, second highest salesman, received a pen and pen- cil set. The, class made 5791.76 to set a .new school 'record for magazine sales. The class re- ceived a plaque for achievement and all salesmen who sold over SIOO worth of magazines received a trophy and salesmen with sales over 530' received scrolls. In October, the juniors gave a Holloween dance called Neewollah . Roberta Smith was crowned Queen of Halloween and reigned over the dance. The juniors were backing the football team all the way, and seven boys - Tom Moriarty, Don JU NIORS ELECT OFFICERS, Smither, Bill Shirley, Richard Pflanzer, Glenn Mc- Clain, Richard Ridpath, and Don Mattingly, earned letter sweaters. Margie Jackson and Mari- lyn Wilkins helped lead the school in yells. One junior, Don Smither, received a letter in basket- ball. After basketball season came the junior variety show, Broadway Headliners . lt was a big success and a lot of fun. In April the junior class rings arrived. The juniors were proud to be the first class in ten years to have sets in their rings. On the committee se- lecting the rings were Dona Henson, Peggy Thomas, Susan Newman, Tom Ford, Glenn McClain, and Dick Bunnell. Highlight of the junior year was the prom, held on May l8. Called Fantasy Orientale, it was held at the Trowel Trade Building in Indianapolis. Judy Goodman and Jim Lancaster were elected Miss and Mr. Junior Class to crown the empress and emperor. As our school year nears its close, we are looking forward with great anticipation to what promises to be one of the best years of our lives, our senior year in high school. The l956 Hornets, through hard work and determined spirit, brought Coach Bob Johnson and assistant Steele Roberts their third winning sea- son in a row. The vastly improved Hornets won their final two games in a walk to finish with 4 wins, 3 losses, and l tie. Although the Hor- nets played good ball, early season mistakes pre- vailed, and Beech Grove found itself behind I3 - 7 with but a minute left and the ball belonging to the Flashes. After blocking a punt, the Hornets drove steadily downfield until with one second re- maining, they had the ball on Franklin's two-yard line. Then quarterback Charlie Gearhart faded back and as the final gun sounded, lofted a perfect touchdown pass to end Bill Weathers to tie the game. Art Sims, a defensive bulwark all year for the Hornets, made 20 tackles in this game. In the Harry E. Wood game, the Hornets had the ball on the Woodchuck six-yard line with 25 seconds remaining and the score tied 6- 6. ln a wild finish, Wood gained possession of the ball and scored to win the game. The Hornets won their next game against Deaf School. After two quick touchdown drives sparked by the passing of Gearhart and halfback Schiefelbein, the Hornet attack bogged down, the final score being 14 - 7. After dropping the next game to a powerful Pike team, the Hornets bounced back to dump Lawrence by two touchdowns and even up their season record. Fine running on the part of several lightning fast Speedway backs told the tale in the Speedway game as Beech Grove dropped its third game to the County Champs. ln the Beech Grove Homecoming game, with rain falling the entire second half, the Hornets- men sloshed and skidded to their third win over a good Greenwood team. Spectacular play on the part of Murdoch, spearheaded the Hornet drive. Below, a charging halfback of Deaf School is downed by Duncan Murdoch, Cl7l, with the help of Bill Weathers, ll9J. Other Beech Grove players are Gearhart, ll3l, Pflanzer, l35l, Totty, ll6l, McClain, 4337, and Schiefelbein, in foreground. Beech Grove won this game, I4-7. The Hornets wrapped up a successful season by defeating Carmel, l9 - 0. The game was sparked by the fine play of Captain Gearhart and all- county halfback Murdoch, who climaxed their three-year varsity careers. Playing their last games this year were Art Sims, Bill Weathers, Bill Schiefelbein, Don Huddleston, Jack Bates, Ron Haulter, and Jim Thomas. These absences from next year's lineup will surely present a problem to Coach Bob Johnson, but the odds are he will come up with another winning combination. Football Managers Roger Smith and Pat Collins JOHNSON HAS IMPRESSIVE RECORD . Mr. Johnson this year completed his fourth season as head football coach. ln the last three years his teams have won 19, lost 5, and tied l game, a record of which he may well be proud. Mr. Roberts, now in his seventh vear as :Assistant football coach, and fifth year as re- serve basketball coach, was head basketball coach for the years 1952-54. HORNETS WIN TWO SECTIONAL GAMES Coach Brunoehler Highlight of the Hornet basketball season was the sectional tourney, in which we advanced to the semi-finals by upset wins over Washington and Lawrence Central, only to be stopped by state champion runner-up Crispus Attucks in our next game. Equally thrilling was a near upset which the Hornets almost dealt Warren Central's highly rated Warriors in the County Tourney, unbeaten at that time. Coach Brunoehler's Gang Defense kept Warren off balance all night, enabling us to lead late in the game by 7 points. But Warren, frightened and bewildered, fought back and nipped the Hornets 50 to 45. Although the Hornets did not have a winning season as they had hoped, they managed to salvage a 7 - l4 season record and gain the respect of all the teams in the county as well as the larger and stronger city schools. Wins were over Deaf School, Morgan- town, Speedway, Danville, Trafalger, and the two wins in the Sec- tional. High scorers of the season were Jerry Sare and Bill Weathers, while the leading rebounders were Charlie Gearhart and Jan Elliott, with Bill Schiefelbein being the defensive ace of the team. Senior Iettermen Jerry Sore, Bill Weathers, Jan Elliott, Bill Schiefelbein, Charlie Gearhart, Rodger Hall, John Brown, and Bob Sutton will be missed next year. Jan Elliott broke our school record by winning the 220 in 23.5 and he also grabbed himself a fourth in the l0O. Don Smither took the high jump with a leap of 5' 8M and also set a school record. Other BG places were taken in the mile by Don Singer, who finished third, in the pole vault by Jim Thomas, who tied with four other boys for first place, and also by our 880 relay team which placed fourth. Well-groomed Hornets took Pike Township 72 U3 to 35 213 and then Harry Wood 89M to 23M. ln the Pike meet, Duncan Murdoch broke the high hurdle record mark from l7.l to l6.4 and Jan Elliott nipped .l off of Walter Fallowfield's old mark to set a new record at l0.6 for the l00. At Wood School in the some week, Don Singer, a very promising sophomore cut down the old mile mark from 4.59 to 4.56.4 and Smither set the now existing record with an inspired leap of 5' 9M . Jim Thomas, running one of his best races of the year, set a toughie to beat in the 180 yard low hurdles. He ran them in 2'l.5 and bettered the old mark by .8 of a second. ln the running of the Capital District meet at Warren this year, the Hornets were second only to Lawrence's powerful Bears. The day was warm, the track fast and the times for the running events were excellent. Elliott ran the 220 yard dash in 22.6 and cut almost a whole second off the previous record and l.l second off the District meet mark. Murdoch also broke his own record in his heat by running the high hurdle in a very fast l6.2 seconds. Singer ran one of his best races of the season when he won the mile and cut down his own record by another .2 of a second. After the Capital District came Waldron and Carmel. The team suffered a mild setback when it lost to Waldron 63 U6 to 36 516, but came back strong to take Carmel 83V2 to 25W. The Sectionals were run on May l0 with Beech Grove qualifying five men, the most .ever to be placed by the Hornets. It was raining when the events were run, but our men who still placed were Elliott in the 220 ' and 100, Bill Messer in the half mile lhe set a new record of 2:lO.7J, Smither in the high jump. Thomas and Murdoch tied for fourth in the pole vault, and Thomas won the flip to go to the Regionals. Singer broke his own record and established a new one at 4:54.2. In the picture to the left is the mile relay consisting ol' Don Singer, Bill Messer, Bob Leamon, ond Jim Day. Not pictured is Bob Leffler, who alternated with Jim during the various meets.
