We began our freshman year with 67 class members. During the course of the year, Lane Ward, Doris Davis, and Jim Brinegar joined the ranks of our class. We were very proud of our Freshman Basketball Team, which finished its regular season undefeated. However, we lost the final game of die Freshman County Tourney to Ben Davis at the Butler Fieldhouse. Our freshman cheerleaders were Beverly Messer, Gay Porter, Janice Emmert, Mary Hess, and Dorothy Smith. Our SophomoreClass was the first to organize at Beech Grove and we elected Charles Grubbs, chairman, and Marilyn Prather, vice-chairman. Under the sponsorship of Mr. McMasters, we had several class parties. Our girls' lnterclass Tourney Team, coached by Pat Davidson won the tourney by defeating the Sailors and Freshmen. In this year, we lost Loretta Collins, Nancy Gulley. Jim Brinegar, Charles Lynch, Charles Hopkins, Sherry Nugent, Charles Locke, Art Lady, Bob Purvis, James Royalty, and Jayne Calvert. We gained John Cravens, Mark Muncie, Madonna Pershing, and Joe Rice. Everyone cooperated to make our J unlor year a success. We had the highest magazine sales in the school's history--82285. Gordon Bailey was our top salesman with a total of over 8150. Carol Morgan, Thelma Hunter, Beverly Messer, and Rita Conway earned trophies for selling over S100 worth of magazines. We selected our class rings and elected officers, who were: Fred Boyles ------- ------- P resident George Fallowfield ---- ----- V ice-President Carol Morgan ------- ------- S ecretary David Dietz ------- -------- T reasurer Mary McMasters, Gordon Bailey - Sergeant-at-Arms We sponsored the lnterclass Tourney and our girls again won the championship. The boys' team finished a close second to the Seniors. Oar prom, The Mauna Kea, was held at the Riviera Club. and we belleve lt was the best ever . During this year, we lost Jim Fisher, Jewell Foltz, Bill McVay, Don Mosby, and Jane Short. New members of the class were Martha Burpo, Betty Frye. Ray J ones, J lm McMahon, Phyllis Pedigo, and Wayne Leonard. - Our Senior year promises to be an outstanding year at Beech Grove High School. Our class is extremely proud of our undefeated football team, composed largely of Seniors. At the beginning of the Senior year, we missed Glenda Bentle, Wilma Brown, Bob Ford, Ray J ones, Mark Muncie, and Lane ward. During me course of the year, we also lost Doris Davis, Wilma SC-billing. John Danahey, and Bill Baker. Chr only new member was Josephine Rosengarten, a transfer from Manual. Our Senior Officers were elected as follows: Fred Boyles - --------------- President George F allowfield - ------ ---- V ice-President Warner Wiley ------ ---------- S ecretary Jim Sare ---- ------------- T reasurer We began immediately to raise money and made a profit of S150 from the sale of pecans. This money is to be used for the production of our yearbook and for the Baccalaureate and Commence- ment programs, which we are already planning. Oar class will graduate 54 sailors, 13 less than were with us when we began our him school career. This has beam a history of the Class of 1955 of Beech Grove High School. We have tried to tell about the activities and high points of our high school life, but only by reading between the lines can you find the real story of the good times had, the good friends made, and the affection we hold for Beedx Grave High. US C DEP RTME The Music Department of Beech Grove High School headed by Mr, Albertson, is one of the most popular departments of our school. For nine weeks this year, Mr. Albertson was assisted by Miss Jayne Blackwell, a student teacher from Jordan College of Music. The band and choir, along with several seventh graders, combined to put on an elaborate Christmas program for the P.T.A. They also performed for the County P.T.A., and gave a program at Carmel High School. The choir also gave Christmas performances at the Englewood Christian Church and at the Bishop Roberts Park Methodist Church. During football and basketball seasons, the marching band provided half -time shows, featur- ing the majorettes, Marilyn, Prather, Sharron Weiger, Pat Johnson, Janice Fletcher, and Fran- ces King. Marilyn was head majorette during the football season and the girls rotated at this position during the basketball season. Marilyn, Frances, and Sharron also entered a twirling contest in which they won first place medals. Joann Campbell was awarded a second place First place honors were won by our band in a marching contest. MR. EARL ALBERTSON medal and Janice Fletcher, a third in this same contest. Several band members of the county were privileged to participate in a County Band Clinic, held at Lawrence Central. Two one-hundred piece bands merged to form a band of over two hundred high school students at this event. Our band was privileged to be among ninety select high school bands invit- ed to take part in a Band Day at Purdue University. Between times, the band also found time to lead the Halloween Parade, sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and the Football Parade, sponsored by The Exchange Club. ATHLETICS CCIACIIING STAFF W These are the men who have coached our fine athletic teams during the past season. Mr. Steele Roberts was assistant football and assistant basketball coach. Mr. Roberts received his education at Indiana and Butler Universities, after which he came to Beech Grove as a fifth grade teacher. The following two years he was assistant coach for both the football and basketball teams and was head basketball coach from 1952-1954. Mr. Robert Johnson coached our football team to their perfect no-loss, no-tie season. To Mr. Johnson is due most of the credit for instilling the Go-go-go enthusiasm which resulted in our first perfect season since 1946. Mr. Johnson attended DePauw University, majoring in history and physical education. He then taught freshman physical education at Indiana University and was assistant basketball coach. From this position he went to Carbondale. Illinois, where he was head baseball and basketball coach and assistant football coach. This is Mr. Johnson's second year as head football coach at Beech Grove High School. Mr. Richard Brunoehler was head basketball and track coach. He received his education at Indiana University, where he majored in physical education and mathematics. He took part in four years of varsity swimming and diving, two years of football, and one year of basketball. He then went to Rising Sun, Indiana, where he was assistant basketball coach for two years. Mr. Brunoehler is in his third year at Beech Grove High School. Beech Grove captured a share of their first county championship in eight years, when they tied before. Beech Grove's season record was 9 wins and 0 losses, 4 wins and 0 losses in the county. Ben Davis's season record was a poorer 6 wins and 3 losses, but they also were tied, 4 wins and 0 losses in the county games. This season's team is second only to the Beech Grove team C10-OJ in the 1946-47 season. The 46-47 team also tied for the county championship. Southport was undefeated in the county play that year. Besides sharing the county championship Beech Grove was the champion of the Capital District Conference. Although Beech Grove lost nine lettermen and only retains six, the prospects for the coming year are good. Besides the six key men next year the Hornet reserve team should help to make it another great year. The reserves have been improving and should show up very good next year. Most of the credit for this year's success should go to the coach, Bob Johnson. His magnetic personality and his GO-GO-GO slogan did wonders with the team. Each year two boys, whose names are to be placed on the football trophy, are elected by the team. This year the boys were George Fallowfield, captaing and Bill Geshwiler, most valuable player. Steve Smith was elected next year's captain. D. Our heavmly population has been greatly increased due to a huge demand for admittance from members of the Beech Grove High School, Class of 1955. Our chief seamstress angels, Georgia Gray and Carol Morgan have been working day and night whipping up new robes, and the managers of the Halo Manufacturing Company, Skip Smith and John Spears have had to recruit extra workers. Our chief secretary, Phyliss Pedigo, has done a fine job of keeping our records and roll book up to date. ln die Grand Celestial Flying Academy, the newest angel cadets earning their wings are Art and Patricia Jessup, who came here suddenly when they died of exhaustion while they were doin' the mambo. These two are now taking beginning flight training under the capable direction of Captain John Storm, the chief flying instructor. The annual flying race was won by Roger Newman, who was awarded a pair of gold- feathered racing wings. Runner-up was David Dietz, who was distracted by a certain small, blonde angel in the cheering section. David was awarded the second prize, a pair of silver-feathered racing wings. Congratulations, boysl The beginner's department reports that Phyliss Belcher has just completed her first solo flight and will soon join the advanced class. We are sorry to hear that Bill Baker and Roy Helweg are in the hospital recovering from broken wings and a cracked halo. These were suffered during a drag race down the golden streets, when they lost control of their chariots and crashed into the Pearly Gates. However, they are recovering quickly under the excellent care of Dr. David Elmore and his efficient nurse, Gertrude Hollander. All of the medicines needed are being furnished by Travis Terhune's Divine Drug Store. John Cravens was arrested after he made a small fortune from the accident by pocketing loose gold shaken off the streets. The repairs are now being made, and Lorita Neal and Anna Sue Myers have been appointed to the job of repearling the gates. Our reporter from the music department, Pat Matkins, reports that Joe Rice has been dis- honorably discharged from the Heavenly Band. Hewas discovered playing When the Saints Come Marching ln at thecommencement exercises for Mary Hess' Training School for Wayward Angels. A loss to the Heavenly Choir are DougRobertson and Kenny Byland who were recmtly transferred to Hillbilly Heaven. However, the choir, under the able direction of Pat Davidson is doing very good work since acquiring the talents of soloists Janice Faye Paugh and Joyce Smith. The recent harp concert ended in an accident for Dorothy Smith, who was injured when a harp string flipped and blackened her eye. We are glad to hear that Dorothy was not seriousy hurt. The harp is now in the capable hands of Judy Elliot, our chief harp tuner. Thelma Hunter and Rita Conway are having a grand opening for their Heavenly Fashions Salon. They havehiredthetop models of the Celestial Kingdom, Beverly Messer, Marilyn Prather, and Nancy Hartzell to model their new creations of pink and charcoal robe-halo ensembles. lt is rumored that Madame Madonna Pershing, acclaimed heaven-wide for her beautifully cut and designed robes, is to be their head fashion designer. HEAVENLY CHRONICLE QContinuedJ A big social event held recently was the political rally for Bill Geshwiler. Bill, who is campaigning for Angel-in-Chief of the Celestial Realm. is opposing Willy Smock and his silver standard for halos. It promises to be a very close election. The rally was well attended, and included in the crowd were the present Angel-in-Chief, Fred Boyles and the President of the Heavenly Council, J erre Thompson. The new fad of exchanging halos between angels going steady was exhibited by Janice Emmert and Spike F allowfield. Also in attendance was the famous film star, Gay Porter who was very strikingly attired in a fetching outfit of matching sky blue wings, halo, and robe. Socialite angel. Josephine Rosengarten, was observed quietly slipping in during the middle of the rally. Two of our more wealthy and influential angels are millionaires, Gordie Bailey and Jerry Campbell. These two partners have madea successful business venture from the sale of escalators to replace the Stairway to Heaven. Wayne Leonard and J im McMahon are partners in a very success- ful detective agency and are now busy on two investigations. One con- cerns Jim Sare and Warner Wiley's Hock Shop for Hot Halos. This business has been making terrific profits since they hired that red-hot auctioneer, Charlie Grubbs. Another investigation is beingheld against Larry Meguiar and Betty Frye, who have been accused of smuggling in Tennessee playboys and other immigrants. Sharron Weiger handles all heaven-to-earth telephone calls and keeps us ln touch with Mary Bauer and Mary Etta McMasters, the only members of our class still on earth. Though at the ripe age of 117, these two are still active on the Olympic Girls Basketball Team. The Class of 1955 is planning a reunion when the entire class answers our roll call. This will beheld in the Grand Celestial Assembly Hall and the entire class is invited. We plan to see you thenl SMALL FRY 63 5 X T' QI J h i' I J E Janice , ' e M 514+ John C. The music for the dance was furnished by the Riviera Club orchestra. The Mauna Kea, as the dance was called, was planned around the Hawaiian Theme. The room was beautifully decorated with flowers, palm trees, and glittering letters spelling out its name. In the center of the dance floor was a small pond surrounded by flowers and palms, and on each table a small palm tree, a lei, and the dance pro- gram. Refreshments of punch and cookies were served by two freshman couples. Art Jessup, chairman of the entertain- ment committee, served as master of cere- monies during a brief floor show. This consisted of three dance numbers and some vocal solos. The climax of the evening was The Grand March in which everyone participated. It was led by the King and Queen, Bill Clark and Barbara Bloir, of 1954 3 5' 4 THE KING AND QUEEN At 11:30, the king and queen of The Mauna Kea were crowned with floral crovms. Bill Clark and Barbara Bloir, the elected king and queen, were crowned by Fred Boyles, the President of the Junior Class, and George Fallowfield, the Vice-President. 'Q .W -. - vmyxi, fx X fig..
