OECICAIIGH ln remembrance we, the Class of 1954, dedicate our annual to our Alma Mater. Beech Grove High School. ln her halls and rooms we have shared many happy times with each other and other students. These memories we will cherish always. In this building we have spent four years learning many subjects, not all liked but all remembered and worthwhile. We would like to thank our teachers and, especially, our parents for their help, patience, and understanding in everything we have undertaken. We sincerely hope that the future classes of Beech Grove Him School will come to know and appreciate all of the privileges of learning and happy times together that the faculty, our parents, and all of those so interested in our future so amply provided for us. lIACL1l1i ELIZABETH TOOHY English Latin Adv. Our cheerleaders were Anna Vandergrift, Joan Herold, and Tiny McFeely. Fdr the first time, we participated in the inter-class tourney. Both teams lost but were not resigned to defeat. Dur- ing that year we lost Gwen Matthewson, Dale Royalty, William Sandley, Gerald Spall, and Janet Jennings, We welcomed Leroy Adams, Michael Bettisch, Donald Black, William Clark, Robert Goldey, Janet Jennings, Thomasine McFee1y, Michael Morrison, Janice Murdock, Roger Mc- Clanahan, Harry Russell, and Helen Webber, who joined our class at the very first of the year. We returned to school in the fall as sophomores with fifty-five members. We lost James Beikman, Mike Bettisch, Joan Herold, Gwen Matthewson, Phyllis Pedigo, and Sharon Wellons during the year, Martha Hawkins,John Konkle, Robert Bellows, and Robert Russell joined the class early in the year but withdrew later that same year. William Alexander, George Hinshaw, Larry Johannes, Robert Lee, Janet Cotton, and Doris Jean Davis joined our class during the year. The boys lost to Franklin Township in the County Reserve Tourney by one point in the first game, but the team made a good showing of itself. In the inter-class tourney that year, the boys were de- feated, but the girls won to bring the first real honor to the Class of '54, Everyone was looking forward to our junior year because it promised to be our best, with class officers to be elected, magazines to be sold, inter-class tourney to be sponsored, a play to be- given, rings to be ordered, and a prom to be planned. As we began to settle down to the routine of school, we looked around and discovered some familiar faces were missing and some new ones had taken their places. Leroy Adams, Janet Cotton, Doris Jean Davis, Barbara Hennis, and Delores Herzog had failed to return for various reasons. Those new to get acquainted with included Linda Cook, George Combs, Janice Cammack, Walker Sandlin, Norman Thompson, and Carole Webster. We elected as officers: Mike Morrison, Presidentg Bill Clark, Vice President, Anna Vandergrift, Secretaryg Harry Russell, Treasurer, and Donna Foust, Sergeant-at-Arms. Our sponsors were Mrs. Laing and Miss Guill. The inter-class tourney was sponsored by us with the help of Mr. Nickels. The girls were defending their hard earned crowns and the boys had still to experience the glory of being Inter- Class Champs. The girls lost to the sophomores in the final game but the boys came through to victory. We also sold magazines and gave a play to raise enough money to be the hosts of one of the nicest proms a junior class at Beech Grove has ever sponsored. The Prom was held in the Atherton Center at Butler University. This was the first time Beech Grove had ever had a Prom there, but we all hope it wasn't the last time. The year was climaxed with the receiving of the long-awaited class rings. In the fall of '53 forty-five self-confident seniors returned to ye ole halls to write the final page of four memorable years. We missed Richard Boles, Ronald Harmon, Marlene Richard- son, Robert Goldey, Robert Lee, and Linda Cook and welcomed Gene Caudle and Elaine Pitts. The officers were: Mike Malone, President: Mike Morrison, Vice Presidentg Kathleen Brown, Secretaryg and Sylvia Prather, Treasurer. Our sponsors were Miss Crabb and Miss Ragsdale. We chose white and crimson as our class colors. Early in the year the class voted to have Dr. J. R. Mitchell, from Purdue University, as guest speaker for our commencement. The seniors were invited to the Junior Prom on May 21. 1954 at the Riviera Club. Baccalaureate services were held May 23, and last but most certainly not least, the members of the Class of '54 received their diplomas on May 28, 1954, thus complet- ing four years of work, learning, and fun. When this senior class begins to fade in the minds of the students and the faculty, as all classes do, we would like to leave behind us this thought: En- joy yourself. it's later than you think. To add spice to this special event, the Student Council obtained ,Terry Chapman, a popular disc jockey from radio station W I R E, to spin the records. Every senior boy and girl was a candidate for the King and Queen, and everyone attending could vote for each. At approximately 10:30 P.M., Wm, Clark and Kathleen Brown were crowned as the King and Queen, Kathleen was presented a dozen long- stemmed red roses by Art Jessup, Treasurer of the Council, and Sylvia Prather, Vice President, presented Bill a box of chocolates. The Council hopes they have established a tradition of having a Homecoming Dance annually after the last home football game. The repeated success of this event was due to the combined efforts of the Council, its sponsors, Miss Moren and Mrs. Durrel, and Mr. Van Horn, our principal. -71 :l SPCRTS I - I 54 I LT I . Later they defeated Indiana Deaf School 7-0, but ended their season with a record of 2 wins, 6 losses, and 1 tie, showing an improvement over last year's record of 1 win and 8 losses. The Indiana Deaf School game was the only victory in the Capital District Conference. Warner Wiley, Spike Fallowfield and Walker Sandlin were named to the All-County District squad. Spike Fallowfield also made All-County. Beech Grove can look forward to a better season next year because of the great number of lettermen returning. BASKETBALL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1953-54 The Beech Grove squad opened their basketball season successfully with a 40-38 defeat of Pike Township. The next week they repeated by knocking off Decatur Central. In the Cotmty Tournament, Beech Grove drew the bye and met Speedway on Friday night. The Hornets downed the Sparkplugs by a 38-34 count. On Saturday, Beech Grove went against Warren Central and almost pulled the upset of the year but finally lost out 64-56. Don Blumberg and Larry Johannes were named to the All-County team but the Hornets success was a team victory. ln the Capital District, Beech Grove had a 4-1 record. At the time of this writing it is still undecided whether the Hornets will share in the victors spot or not. This year marked the first year that the Hornets have beaten Speedway in eight years, and this year's team took advantage of the situation by winning two from the Sparkplugs. This year was also the first year in the past eight campaigns that the Hornets have gone to the semi- final round of the County Tournament. How the Hornets will fare in the Sectionals is a question to be decided February 23-25. As we to to press the Hornets' record stands at '1-10. y f , Anna V. , X , . 4'2 .K 1 M A ,:- .1 U in Q ' I M R Bob R. e' A 'I Q rr. Sylvia P. She is gazing deep, still deeply into her crystal ball---back to her Alma Mater---Beech Grove, Indiana. Shall we join her? Look, therein the crystal ball! Can that be Beech Grove? Why, it's a metropolis now! Now, where would the best place be to look up the history of these old friends? Of course, a newspaper office. There's the old Perry Township office. On the window it says, The Grove Gazette---owned, edited, and delivered by Bill Alexander. Let's goin, maybe he can help us. Well, here we are in the storage room of the Gazette with stacks of newspapers to roam through. Let's read some of the front page stories. It says here Senator Joseph Geshwiler is beinginvestigated by the Congressional Committee, headed by Donel Blumberg, for over-expenditures in his last senatorial campaign. lt looks like Norman Thompson's love for the law paid off. He just succeeded J. Edgar Hoover of the F.B.I. Janice Murdock was appointed Chairman of the Land Settlement Committee to arbitrate a dispute between the United States and Mexico over the discovery of a huge uranium deposit on an Lmknown, unexplored island in the Gulf of Southern California by Professor Gary Alford. Pro- fessor Alford claimed this island in thenameof the United States. Now, however, Mexico declares this her possession and demands that the U.S. evacuate the island immediately. Miss Murdock is assisted by her very capable secretary Shirley Simpson, the first woman candidate for President of the United States. Mayor J oe Mclntosh of our fair city honored Detective Dan Challis for cracking the mysti- fying case of Little Blue Riding Hood by just playing a hunch. . . Enough about politics, law and international problems. How about adventure stories? Were there any daring people in the class? Doris Harmon crossed the Pacific Ocean on a self-constructed raft and she is now making personal appearance tours in Europe. One almost triumphant adventure was performed by Carole Webster. She swam three- fourths of the Gulf of Mexico, decided she couldn't make it the rest of the way, turned around and swam back home! If you remember correctly, Carole was always considered a bright person! UQ Next is the sport section. Who became famous sport figures? Remember reading about Bill Clark's race horse, ridden by Jockey Eddie Loughmiller, winning the Kentucky Derby? Manager Jack Harlan says this horse is the fastest since Man O' War and will win twice as much fame and money for all concerned. Larry Johannes has been appointed manager of the professional Harlem Globe Trotters. Charles Zeke Jones is football coach of Beech Grove. His team won the County this year. Four of the eleven players were of the Spall clan. flt seems Margaret Denson and Gerry Spall's prediction almost came true after alllj The retired all time great strikeout pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Harry Cat Russell, recently took oath as the New York State Baseball Commissioner. The society page withits personal articles should give us more information about our friends. It seems Mike Malone, Dick Lester, and Mike Morrison are the wealthy eligible bachelors being chased by three socialites, Tiny McFeely, Carolyn Harvey, and Joanne Newerth. Sylvia Prather, former fashion model for Wm. H. Block 8: Co., and Col. Earl Gray have at long last announced their wedding date. Speaking of weddings,Rev. Walker Sandlin recently married Robert Rudolph and Anna Vander- grift, who has resigned her position as fashion illustrator for Vogue Magazine to Barbara Bloir. They play to take up residence in New West India where Mr. Rudolph has been assigned to con- struct a community center. Patsy Pace was crowned Miss Dairy Queen of 19'14 . Gerry Schroeder accepted the job of interior decorator for the monkey cages of the St. Louis Zoological Gardens. Gladys Catron was appointed Superintendent of the Beech Grove City Hospital. Kathleen Brown celebrated her tifteenth year as teacher of Home Economics at the new ultra- modern Beech Grove High School. While looking through the advertisement pages we discovered many former classmates had established businesses of their own. There was one advertisement all the way from Palm Beach, Florida, which read, Welcome to the Dixie Resort--managed by Donna Foust and Bob Lee . Every Woman Can Be Beautiful , is the slogan of a chain of beauty salons throughout the Mid-West, owned by Evelyn Vogel and Helen Webber. Remember this--it might come in handy some day! Elaine Pitts and Bonnie Schilling are running the Mother Goose Kindergarten. The Standard Grocery Store had their usual big ad. Bob Kroening, manager of the Beech Grove branch, believes in the prophecy, The bigger the ads, the better the businessl Arnie Myers just added the twentieth drugstore in Indiana to his chain. While you are in Beech Grove, be sureto pay a visit to Beech Grove's first Drive-In Theater, for Hudsons only, owned by George Combs. Why waste time driving when you can conveniently fly? Dick Utterback and George Hinshaw established the first helicopter parking lot in downtown Indianapolis. Looking .for a job? Since the New York Central has been converted into an atomic energy plant, President Gene Caudle has many openings for alert young men. Well, that's it. . .You'vehadabriefview of the Senior Class of '54 twenty years from now. . .
