B CKGROUN September, 1947, was the month of the year when seventy-two green freshmen were starting their high school careers, with big thoughts and high ambitions. These boys and girls were looking forward to the new life of high school activities. Yes, this was indeed a memorable occasion. As freshmen, our class, of coursehhad a freshmen basketball team, which did very well. Our cheerleaders were Jack Sleeth, Laura Biggerstaff, Carol Haines, Elaine Sny- der, and Elva Fallowfield. Then came the inter-class tourney, county tourney, and the Sectionals. Although the inter-class games were much smaller, we held as much if not more enthusiasm for it. The boys lost their games, but the girls won theirs, which sav- ed face. We lost our first classmate, William Black, that year. In the fall of 1948, we came back as sophomores. Many of our classmates were missing. They were: Richard Carl, Ruby Conrad, Bill Johns, Mary Lockhart, Ed Royal- ty, Thelma Sandly, Dorothy Scheckerll, Elaine Snyder, Grady Shipley, Jack Troutman and John Thompson. Our sophomore boys won the Reserve team tourney that year. Dur- ing the year, Lucille Skelton and George Neely became members of our class. In the inter-class tourney that year, our boys were defeated, but the girls' luck held out, and they won again. Our junior year was a mass of activities. First we chose our class officers who were Paul Mendenhall, president, Jack Sleeth, vice president, Mary Kleine, secretary, and Jane Rutledge, treasurer. Of course we sold magazine subscriptions. We also ordered our long awaited class rings. Shirley Carey and Don Miller enrolled in our class. Our Prom was held at the Columbia Club. We missed the presence of Anna Hues- ton, Loren Hunt, Dennis Krauth, Rachel Poffenbarger, Louise Van Zante, Delores Williams and Elizabeth Kennedy. Our last year is here! It seems such a short time ago that we were freshmen. Our class officers for this year are Paul Mendenhall, president, Melvin Lentz, vice president, Betty Ruesch, secretary, and Leontine Melnis, treasurer. We started work immediately on our annual with Jane Rutledge as editor. Leontine Melnis came into our class at the beginning of this year and Don Miller dropped out. We sold pecans, had a bake sale, and gave a dance and fashion show in order to make money for our many ex- penses. We have had a wonderful time in our high school years, and we certainly hope the future senior classes of Beech Grove will agree with us that they have had fun during their high school careers.
