These boys and girls were looking forward to the new life of high school activities. Yes, this was indeed a memorable occasion. As freshmen, our class, of coursehhad a freshmen basketball team, which did very well. Our cheerleaders were Jack Sleeth, Laura Biggerstaff, Carol Haines, Elaine Sny- der, and Elva Fallowfield. Then came the inter-class tourney, county tourney, and the Sectionals. Although the inter-class games were much smaller, we held as much if not more enthusiasm for it. The boys lost their games, but the girls won theirs, which sav- ed face. We lost our first classmate, William Black, that year. In the fall of 1948, we came back as sophomores. Many of our classmates were missing. They were: Richard Carl, Ruby Conrad, Bill Johns, Mary Lockhart, Ed Royal- ty, Thelma Sandly, Dorothy Scheckerll, Elaine Snyder, Grady Shipley, Jack Troutman and John Thompson. Our sophomore boys won the Reserve team tourney that year. Dur- ing the year, Lucille Skelton and George Neely became members of our class. In the inter-class tourney that year, our boys were defeated, but the girls' luck held out, and they won again. Our junior year was a mass of activities. First we chose our class officers who were Paul Mendenhall, president, Jack Sleeth, vice president, Mary Kleine, secretary, and Jane Rutledge, treasurer. Of course we sold magazine subscriptions. We also ordered our long awaited class rings. Shirley Carey and Don Miller enrolled in our class. Our Prom was held at the Columbia Club. We missed the presence of Anna Hues- ton, Loren Hunt, Dennis Krauth, Rachel Poffenbarger, Louise Van Zante, Delores Williams and Elizabeth Kennedy. Our last year is here! It seems such a short time ago that we were freshmen. Our class officers for this year are Paul Mendenhall, president, Melvin Lentz, vice president, Betty Ruesch, secretary, and Leontine Melnis, treasurer. We started work immediately on our annual with Jane Rutledge as editor. Leontine Melnis came into our class at the beginning of this year and Don Miller dropped out. We sold pecans, had a bake sale, and gave a dance and fashion show in order to make money for our many ex- penses. We have had a wonderful time in our high school years, and we certainly hope the future senior classes of Beech Grove will agree with us that they have had fun during their high school careers. si Mr. Albertson Chorus i Junior High M Music S L . Lights are shining, the band is playing, and the midway is a hall of excitment. As we go down the crowded Midway we see the booths and side shows with their barkers, who are ready and willing to take just one tenth of a dollah for one to see the greatest show on earth. Let's look around before we go into the Big Top. We go into the fortune teller's booth, sit down, and wait for Madame La Smiley to reveal the future. In she comes bedecked with bangl es and e ar r ings , smelling of jasmine and root beer. We wait for Madame to get into the right mood before she goes on. At last she speaks, You will find many of your friends here today. Some will be tall, some dark, some handsome. They will have changed a great deal since their high school days with you, so beware! We start to leave but Madame stops us at the door. Cross the palm with silver, commands Madame. We don't have any change so we give her an old Dewey button. We doubt if she can tell the difference since she hasn't seen money for so long. After we leave the tent, we are startled to hear sirens and bells close by. Just for curioslty's sake, we wander over to the noise. A big red faced man is shouting and waving his hands, Come one, come alll See the greatest dare-devils of all time--Norvel, the Marvel, and Tom, the Atom Bomb, the masters of motorcycle riding. Watch them as they get dizzler by riding their cycles along the side of a wall parallel with the ground! A little farther down the Midway is a stand with a bold sign out in front stating, Dr, James Fox's combination snake bite tonic, furniture polish, hair oil, and rat poison comes to you all in one bottle for the surprisingly low price of thirty cents. The trial bottle is free, of course. It ls almost time for the show to begin in the .Big Top and we must buy our tickets. As we come close to the box office, a familiar sound greets our ears. It is the booming voice of Kenny Moneymaker, the Big Top barker, who is trying to get the people to see the greatest show on earth. Behind him on the platform are seven beguiling dancing girls, covered with bracelets, necklaces, and flowers. As we draw closer we recognize them to be none other than Pat Alexander, Shirley Atherton, Elva Fallowfield, Jane Rutledge, Betty Ruesch, Mary Ruth Gillespie, and Mary Kleine. We get our tickets and step into the semi-darkness of the tent. Just as we start to find our seats, the usher comes toghelp us. As soon as we get nearer the lights, ,we see that our usher is another classmate of ours, Walter Eland with his trusty flash light. After forty minutes of frantic searching, we reach our correct seats, and just in time, for the spot lights have been directed to the honored box in which some of our more famous classmates are seated. The band, which is being superbly conductedby Bill Houze, strikes up the Beech Grove War Song while the ring master, Don Russell, introduces all of the dignitaries beginning with Don Kavanaugh, owner and president of the circus, and his vice president, Jim Oliver. Then Kenny Anderson, who is now ambassador from the United States to Kentucky, and Leontine Melnis, ambassadress also from the United States to Latvia, are introduced. Seated next to her is General. Lucille Shelton, head of the Women Marine's Corps. Inback of them is Gunnln' George Neely, five time winner of the Five Hundred Mile Memorial Day Classic. With him is his mechanic, Melvin Lentz. Next to him is Dorothy Ammons, who owns not only a large chain of garages, but also an interest in the Beech Grove Tribune whose editor is Richard .Campbell. The Honor Club of the Beech Grove High School was organized during the school year 1936-37, with the twenty-five charter members being initiated on May 12, 1937. The purpose of the Honor Club is four-fold. Q11 To promote the development of the character of the individual. A Q25 To encourage service by the individual in home, school, church, and com- munity activities. Q35 To develop leadership. 1-U To encourage high scholarship. xp, ,A .. AQ z fp, R King--Don Cunningham Queen-Mary Jane Bailey PRDM The 1950 Junior-Senior Prom was held in the tenth floor ballroom at the Columbia Club. The theme was Bon Voyage , and the ballroom was cleverly decorated complete with an anchor and toy sailor s . Paul Al- berts' orchestra played and a girl soloist sang some lovely selections. Refreshments of orange ice floating in punch were served. Toward the end of the evening, the king and queen were c r own e d. The king was Mike Cunningham and the queen was Mary Jane Bailey. After the coronation the couple led off the next dance. Soon the dance drew to a close, and many started to leave. But the evening wasn't over for most of us, some of the Juniors had to stay to remove the decora- tions and see that everything was in Order, By this time the punch was long forgotten, and so all needed something else to eat. Coming home we were singing, It's Three O'Clock in the Mor ning , and that song wasn't very far from wrong. Coronation Ceremony: Tom Pierson, Mary Jane Bailey, J ack Sleeth, Paul Mendenhall, Mary Kleine, Don Cunningham, Elva Fallowfield. CProphecy continuedl Betty Royalty, world's fastest typist. In the next row is Beech Grove's mayor, Paul Mendenhall with his social secretaries, Shirley Carey and Jessie Gray. And last to be introduced is Kenny Dobbs, owner of Dobbs Hat Company. After the introductions we settle back to enjoy the Grand Processional being led by three giant elephants whose riders are JoAnn Bloir, Mary Lou Sharp, and Lois Davis. Behind them are the famed bareback riders, Norma Marney and Velma Williams. Each of them is riding six white horses. Then the est men come in following some gay and gaudy clowns. They are Bud Cecil, the tallest man, Harold Lambert, the heaviest man, and blinking and yawning after them comes Jewell Shelton, world's sleepiest man. By his side is Don Harvey, ex-fire eater, better known to the circus crowd as Heartburn Harvey. As soon as the procession is over, the action in the rings begins. In ring one we find Jack Sleeth and his trained seals. When Mr. Sleeth's seals are not working in the ring, they are loaned out to different high schools as yell leaders. V Next in ring two are the great trapeze artists, John and Laura Biggerstaff. Laura is about to make a triple flip through the air as Larry Sahm comes up shouting, PeanutsI Pop corn! Crackerjackl ! I In ring three is Bob Byland who is busy cracking his whip at five ferocious lions. These lions were captured by Ralph Jones and Turk Jenkinson, those bring 'em back mutilated boys. Just as a lion starts to spring upon Mr. Byland, Larry Sahm blocks our view with his pop corn box. In ring four is Willard Dunlap, the tight rope walker, who is about to walk the taut rope blind folded. Just as Willard starts, Larry Sahm accidentally drops hot peanuts all over us. In ring five a double feat1u'e is taking place. First, there is Don Pieper, who is preparing to be shot out of a cannon, and second, are the Wild men from Borneo, Dick McPherson and Oran Spall. They seem to be showing their strength by tearing the immense seventy-five page Beech Grove telephone director into halves. Later, as we are leaving the tent we look at each other and hope that this has all been a very wonderful dream. Inside this tent, Ladies and Gentlemen, we have one of the greatest, if not the most outstanding, football team of the past season. Mr. McCaffry, our grid coach, graduated from Purdue University where he played end on the varsity team. In his first year of coaching at Beech Grove, he became well liked by everyone, as a coach and as a teacher. His past as a football player symbolizes the type of coaching he has done. The boys on the team worked for him and they won for him as much as they did for their school. This season was not made great because of the work that went into the many days of practice and because of the school spirit that was behind the team. ' When football season rolls around next year, there will be nine new faces on the first string line up. Those leaving nine are seniors, graduating to try their skills somewhere else. No matter how manyare leaving, there will always be another football team and another season as great as the one that has passed. The boys on the team worked and fought together through 18 games, winning 6 and dropping 12 for a . 334 percent average. The fact that we didn't have many tall boys accounted for some of our losses. The team consisted of four seniors and six juniors. The seniors are Paul Menden- hall, Harold Lambert, Don Pieper, and Jim Fox. The juniors left are swell players and should do well next year. When the county tourney rolled around everyone was eager for Beech Grove's game against Ben Davis. But with great disappointment, the team wasn'tplaying its best and was beaten 50 to 35. The wonderful coaching was done by Mr. Murray Mendenhall. Murray graduated from Fort Wayne High School and thenwent on to Indiana University. His wonderful coach- ing came to a climax when he led the quintet into a scientific type of ball game against the Howe Hornets during the sectionals. Beech Grove played the second game of the sectionals. Everyone talked about the game, hoping yet doubtful of the out-come. Howe was tall and made Beech Grove look like a midget. The boys were on the floor ready for the jump--Beech Grove got the tip off. Beech Grove Hornets went to the ten second line and held the ball. In fact, they held the ball the whole first quarter. The score at the end of the first quarter was O to 0. Everyone in the field house was amazed. The second quarter was about the same. Messer and Sigman dropped one each and Howe connectedwith one and acharity toss to end the half 4 to 3 with Beech Grove leading. The second half started with Paul Mendenhall sinking one for a three point lead. Then Howe started off and led the rest of the game. The final score was Howe 18g Beech Grove, 6 . Even though Beech Grove didn't win, everyone will remember the game, the team, and the coach.
