l lf' V A la? L. To R: Steve Cook, editor, Miss Cathy Bock, advisor, and Dawn Weyer, editor. Smoke Signals Sent You The News This year was the newspaper's finest year. Issues of Smoke Signals were published every three weeks, containing holiday contests, cartoons, sports, and every kind of school news you could think of fand a few you didn'tJ. This was all done in spite of things like the press breaking down, losing articles, finding out that there was one whole page to complete with only 30 minutes to do it in, frantic trips to McDonald's for lunch, and fending off attacks by the librarian who kept vociferating that the library was not the City Desk! The student body was welcome to contribute anything of interest and the staff gratefully accepted ideas for improvement. The newspaper staff would like to thank the Student Council for donating an electric typewriter with different styles of type and ev- eryone who helped make it possible for this year's paper to be a success. L. to R: B. Weyer, H. Hicks, C. Hayward, P. Clarahan, 1. Nelson, L. Hayward, M. Sigler, B. Heinze.

Chieftain Staff Gets It All Together The yearbook staff has racked their brains for brilliant ideas for the 1971 Chieftain. Everyone on the staff has donated their time, morning, noon, and night to run around so we could capture all the activities for the printed page. During the meetings in the library, major decisions had to be made between the yearbook staff and other interest groups such as the newspaper staff. Decisions such as who gets what tables were a problem. Typical questions which were asked of some yearbook staff members as they walked into the library were Who are you going to work for today? since some of the members also worked on the newspaper. The biggest crisis was the dreaded deadline. The biggest problems were Who does that face belong to? in the photos. This Chieftain is the last, but it's the best West has ever had in spite of the problems, the deadline crisis, and decisions. MAJ L. to R: P. Clarkson, K. Whelan, S. Diehl, K. Churchill, 1. Eastwood, D. Schroeder, E. Smith, l. Sulewski. 50lActiviIies
