The Golden Years have brought many changes in the role of extra-curricular activities. Some modern students spend their leisure time in a carefree manner, but most choose to join clubs to gain experience in competing for recogni- tion. Today emphasis is laid on the betterment of the entire organization rather than one person. All schools endeavor to prepare their students for the roles they will face as adults. For early Bedford schools, this meant teaching stu- dents to read, to write, and to use arithmetic. However, today ' s jobs call for more complex training. Stu- dents can now take courses in vo- cational preparation and on-the-job training. Besides giving students book learning, schools also try to build character. Competition is used to teach students to give their ut- most during the game, but to for- get rivalry afterward.
