I Progress denotes the spirit of the Golden Years. The development of faster and less expensive transpor- tation greatly changed the variety and prices of goods offered in Bed- ford businesses. These changes in the methods of transportation vi ere among the first signs that Bedford was becoming a city of industry. The influx of factories had a pro- found effect upon the Bedford School System. The increasing num- ber of students necessitated the building of larger schools, and the needs of a manufacturing town called for more specialized training in the classroom. With the opening of Bedford High School in 1871, Bedford entered the world of modern and stimulating education. e isiiiM..
