The dreams ofthe educator of today are ones in which the best edu- cated students come from his school or the schools of his nation. ln order to ful- fill these dreams, the finest teachers and facilities must be obtained. Dr. Schafer, Superintendent of Schools, shares these dreams with the educa- tors ofthe world. His dreams, however, are beginning to become a reality. For many years Dr. Schafer and others closely affiliated with education at Bedford realized our increasing need for a new senior high school. This dream is now in the planning stage. Not only is our school the finest in the area, but we be- lieve our teachers are the finest as well. Dr. Schaferis efforts to secure the best possible for the youth of North Law- rence Community have proved successful, and we are grateful to him for our ad- mirable educational system. All summer long hand members and parents worked to 1' ai s e nough money for this trip by doing such tasks as car washes, rummage ales, candy sales, and a 50 year time capsule. Their efforts finally proved successful when they reached their goal-departing on September 27, 1968, at noon from the high school larking lot. Their trip was highlighted with such events as Six Flags Over Tex- s, touring the fair, falling out of boats, and just plain fun. 1 After a tiresome but educational weekend, they returned to Bed- prd late Sunday night, September 29. In Memoriam When Time, who steals our years away, Shall steal our pleasures too, The mem'ry of the past will stay, And half our joys renew. Thomas Moore JOHN R. HENSINGER September 11, 1951 August 16, 1968 The loss of John R. Hensinger was not only felt by his family and close friends, but also by the entire Senior class. His witty personality was reflected in the classrooms and in conversations with fellow classmates. He was an active participant in band and Scarlet and Purple and excelled in scouting as evidenced by becoming an Eagle Scout. As we receive our diplomas and go our separate ways, John will still be a part of us. The Juniors excitedly take over their upper class responsibilities by receiving their class rings which are symbolic of their unity and upperclassman status. The challenging task of raising money for prom decorations is the prime concern for this group. The Junior-Senior Prom is the exciting event of the year, therefore. every Junior and Junior class sponsor pitches in and does his part to make this a night to remember for years to come. S. ' p K N ,fi 5 'K' I at M Freshmen Enter B.H.S. Freshmen walk into B.H.S. on their first day, wide- eyed and feeling a little nervous inside. They wonder whether or not they will ever belong in this big school where confusion is the dominating factor between classes, in the halls, locker rooms, and by the candy machines. But, in a few short weeks, these same freshmen lose their timidity and start accepting their challenge. They are eager to join in the new activities and experiences that are awaiting them such as: campaigning and electing class officers by using voting machinesg going to home- comingg joining numerous clubsg and formulating a basic plan for the future. Now the freshman class shows excitement and con- fidence instead of nervousness and insecurity because they have become a part of the system and they know the best is yet to come. Mike 171 FOUI' years is a long time -too long to forget. We look around and ask -where did it go? We worked, we played -but for four years? Then we look the other way -into tomorrow. Suddenly we,re not so tall as we thought we were And not so smart. But we Hnd that somehow We learned a decisive lesson at Bedford: something we wouldnlt have had without teachers and administration, without our fellow students -a direction into that uncertain tomorrow It can never be so dark again Though the world may change and the times change and we change. 1 Senior Pioneer Members Farewell The memories of this past year have now been recorded, published, and bound into what we hope is a typical picture of happ times in B.H.S. To make this 200 page book a color-filled remembrance, it took many devoted people. The Pioneer Staff would lik to extend their utmost appreciation to everyone who was connected with making the 1969 Pioneer a successful yearbook. We woul especially like to thank Mr. W. F. Butherus for his helpful ideas and suggestions on the general appearance of the book, the Interl Collegiate Press for the copying and printing, Mr. Owen Roberts and Roberts Studio for their professional touch in our Senior an A underclass pictures and informal shots, and the administration and faculty for their understanding and assistance as we interrupted classes to take these pictures. Last of all, we would like to give special recognition to our sponsor, Mr. Byron Buker, for his time advise, and patience. We appreciate not only the hours that he spent on the yearbook, but also, as manager of the stockroom for this basketball concession stands. Yve end this book hoping that we have successfully reflected 1969 in a way which will always picture your image of Bedford High School for years to come. 200 x -...Mm i Ns.. -. ff fx vie X - - 'i X I V A . , , as A gg .5 k,,, . :., .. : . .
