English Is Our Doorwa to Effective Communication While giving speeches, plays. and radio broad- casts, speech students practice the most necessary of skills-oral communication. In four semesters, they learn public address and theatrical arts from make-up and costuming to box office management. English classes emphasize speech, as well as reading. literature, grammar, and composition. Oral reports are given from library research on crime, hobbies. and current events. Oral readings of poems and plays such as Julius Caesar enrich the English classes. Reading is stressed on the freshman level, and students work with films and Npacersn to increase their speed and comprehension. Upperclassmen concentrate on another vital as- pect of communication, written expression. They write short stories, themes. letters, and plays. The seniors explore and write about perfect societies based on their reading of Walden. Two, Brave New Mrs. Ehlers' seniors read and interpret literature, World, 1984, Gullivefs Travels, and Utopia.
