Our forefathers were so greatly inter- ested in its operation that they dealt with it in the first Article of the Constitution. That Article sets forth the power and duties of the country's highest legisla- tive body-the Congress of the United States of America. The school year 1967-68 has been an important one ,to the students and faculty. Student government has advanced to the point where it represents the will of the student body more than ever before. Student Council originated a program for electing class officers which has provided a much-needed understanding of the procedures of our national elections. Democracy has truly found a place in Bedford High School. I 3 ' in I inf'-I e r f' ,-- '- Q , f, P' 1-P. In four semesters, they learn public address and theatrical arts from make-up and costuming to box office management. English classes emphasize speech, as well as reading. literature, grammar, and composition. Oral reports are given from library research on crime, hobbies. and current events. Oral readings of poems and plays such as Julius Caesar enrich the English classes. Reading is stressed on the freshman level, and students work with films and Npacersn to increase their speed and comprehension. Upperclassmen concentrate on another vital as- pect of communication, written expression. They write short stories, themes. letters, and plays. The seniors explore and write about perfect societies based on their reading of Walden. Two, Brave New Mrs. Ehlers' seniors read and interpret literature, World, 1984, Gullivefs Travels, and Utopia. The back- ground and literature of Latin is the key to many basic concepts of mod- ern political and intellectual life. Business education is valuable to all students because all citizens need a basic understanding of our business economy. The person who allows him- self to become a financial delinquent in the areas of credit, savings, investments, and insurance will be handicapped for a lifetime. Many students choose the business curriculum and strive toward the development of skills that are saleable to businessmen. Courses in typewriting, shorthand, office practice, bookkeeping, and sales- manship are the means to the accomplishment of such a goal. The Social Studies Department is primarily concerned with giving the student skills in critical thinking which in turn will instill in this student the confidence to think and communicate his ideas in a democratic community. The courses are designed to balance theory with application. Facts are vital to the overall application but the intent is to stimu- late student participation. Lectures are minimized while dialogue between student and teacher is maximized. The traditional Social Studies curriculum still exists. Modifi- cation is under studyg an example of this is the flexible schedul- ing-team teaching concept. The current feeling amongst the faculty is mixed--many feel that we should retain some of the old and apply some of the new. Whatever the decision-the Social Studies Department is still mainly concerned with developing a habit of constructive thinking in all students-those going to col- lege and those who terminate their education upon completion of high school. Brad Lytton welcomes Congressman Lee Hamilton to our school prior to a convocation. Mr. Hamilton's policies were avidly dis- cussed in social studies classes. Deterioration and inefficiency sparked a con- version to new gas-fired boilers. The change was not completed before cold weather arrived so faculty and students had a few extra days of vacation. The old coal-burning boilers were of 1924 and 1928 vintage. The new boilers cost 340,772 and are fully automatic. The new boilers arrive. Down they go into their new home. Freshmen enter with an air of curious anticipation in being a full-fledged member of Bedfordis stu- dent body. Their excitement gives them away as they enter school for the first time, but they soon adapt to the new surroundings and begin to participate in the various activities. Responsibilities that have never before been experienced are gained during this year. These responsibilities are often taken on reluctantly and without clear insight into their importance. As the year draws to a close most freshmen are pacing the corridors with a happy smile and a confident gait. They feel their freshman year has been a major step in becoming ma- ture young men and women.
