One group took ugp d-ebateg one, declamatory and the oilher, extemporan- cous sp-eakinsg. 'llhe last group studied the different periodical-s such as the Literary Digest, and Review of Revliews, preparing to speak on all current subjects. A home lcon. lest was then held for these people. Each contestant drew his subject out of the twenty selected topics just an ou-r 'before time to talk. Th-ey 'were allowed to 'converse wirlh no one during the tilme. The winners of this contest 'were Jessie Hook, Helen Masters, Gayle Howe, Lavelle Kuhn, John Meikle, and 'Marion fColbb. Mrs. Helen Moody was the judge. Four of these winners chose to co-mp-este for 'lcoal honors. Tlhey were Jessie Hook, Helen Masters, Gayle Howe, and Lavelle Kuhn. The same magazines were studied and the same nopics were sent from the State Department. The contest was held on Marc-h 27. Mr. Apple-gate from Clarilndna was the judge. Jessie Hook slpok-e on Hoover's Chances for Presildentiol Nomination and was declaed .fihe winner. Gayle Howe ranked second with Lindlbergh's Mission for her subject. Helen Masters spoke on the Big Navy. Lavelle Kuhn's sub- ject was the Havana Conference. Efaclh girl talked at least eight minu.'!e-s. A district contesll followed on April 20, in which Bedford's representative placed third. The County Contest was April 30. This was also at Bedford. Miss Gladys Griswell of Maryville StaT'.e Teachers' College was the judge. Jessie Hook 'was awarded first place. All of the contestants talked on the same subject which was not known until an 'hour befor-e the contest. The subject was Oil Scand-als in the United States. DEBATE The question fo.r dclbate chris year was: Resolved that there should 'be est- abllished a Fe-deal Department of Education with -a secreixary in the president's cabinet. Four members of last y-ear's debating team were back again this year and since Qiahe teams this year were compni-sed of only two members, these four made u-p the two debating teams. Two practice debates were held with ,Maryville and Shenandoah. No decis- ion was mad-e at the delbafge with Shnaandoafh but the negative won over Mary- ville with a 2-1 decision. . . The first debate in the state series was held with Leon an-d Ayr. The negative team, composed of Billy Richardson and Jerry Rolberts, defeated Leon 3-0, while the affirmative teatm, Lucille Meredith and Eula Blake lost to MJ. Ayr 2-1. Both Mt. Ayr and Bedford -had the same number of judges' decisions. but lowa City declared Mt Ayr the wlinner. Although the Lreams this year were not as successful as they were last year, much creditds due them for their hard work.

After mulch urging, a large numiber of students reported for declamatory work and after hard fwork on lbobh the ,part of the -coach and the students all were eliminated lbut four rconitestanlfs in each diivision. A houme conte-st was held on February 10 ifor these twelve contestants. This was an ex- ceptionally good contest and was a very difficult one to judge. The win-ners in this were: Charles Huff, oratoricalg :Geraldine Roberts, dnatmatiicg Ona Stickle- man, humorous. These three -contestants cnteied the Four School Contest held at Blocklton, the contesants in oratorieal ad d-ralmabic winwning first plaiceis, These two then entered the Sulb-District at Corning where Geraldine was eliminated. Charles was then a contesliant in the Pre-fDistrict Contest held at Bedford, but the met. defeat at that time. Bedford is gaining iimtptortance in Itlhe declamat-ory field every year and if the students continue the good work of this year we will have some champions in the coming years. 'a
