' L-as -.-.-.-.-.5-. VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE B2 The purpose of the Vocational Agric-ulture Department of B. H. S. is to help boys from the .farm 1h-omes prepare themselves for the work of making a living as a farmer. For many years the pubillifc sclhool system has recognized its responsilbiliity for Vocationajl training in some of the professions- but onlfy within the last ten ye-ars has work in agriculture of a vocational nature been undertaken. This worlk was instituteid in our own sehools in 1926-27, with one c-lass of thirteen Hooiys and is now on its second ye-ar lwith two classe-sg one of llftcen boys sutdying Farm Mechanics, and one of seventeen 'boys studying Animal Husbaindiry. No boy is 'adrmitted to the sec-ond yea-r clfass unless he can arrange to put into practice on a farm scale some of the prinfciples that are studied. The first class raised corn and kept records of their costs of production, while a majonity of this year's class are busily engaged in seeinlg who can produce pork at the lowest cost. Other are raising poultry and bees, or are handling dairy cows. The activities of the department includ-ed a svhlort course in, dairying for adults in 1928. Mr. Hendren is in charge of the Department. A Clufb was formed in which topics of inlerest to thc group were dis- cuslsed.

Las MANUAL TRAINING The Manual Training rooms this year are delightfully situated in the New School Build-ing, and are eqfuipped with mod-ern, -efficient tools. Of the many branch-es of Manual Training, woodwork-ig considered the most satisfactory and valuable in B. H. S, Tfhrouigh this work the pupil gains a knowledge of iconstrulftion and design. Theory and practice of woodfwork are studied. Tfhe former teaches the proper form in handling tools, and thc latter 'how to become skillful in the use of them. Systematic order and order of pfroceduvre are also greatly emphasized and are ve-ry essential to the workers. The boys have turned out some very coammfendaible articles thlis y-ear, under the diirection of Mir. lVDc.Lain, Mechanical Drlawing is of'fe'red during the second year of Manual Training, and in thlis course the boys. plan theiir own woodwork projects. NORMAL TRAINING The Normal Training Department, organized in 1913 under the supervision ot Goetch, has become or-c of the most important 'courses in the High School. Organized for the purpose of preparing students to teach, it has be- come so practical and efficient as to attract many students from neighboring towns. The total enrollment is now twenty six, fourteen seniors and twelve juniors. State tests are taken Kin- 'both the Junior and Senior years. In the Senior yea-r twenty four hours of observation and fifteen hours of practice teaching are required before ia Normal Training certificate is granted. The Norm-al Training Clvuib was establish-ed this year for the first time. This club me-ets once a week and prepares material to be used in their rural teaching.
