Class Color: Fuchsia and Gray Class Flower: Rose Class Motto: Set me adrift in a sea of hope, and l'll set my sail to a new horizon. T--J ,- f., 4' .1 What is Girl's State? This is a question very frequently asked. Girl's State is where 500 girls from all over the state are thrown together for seven days. During these seven days, the girls become politicians. They build a unit of government, electing from their own representatives, city, county, and state officials for a model state. This is one of the most exciting and busy weeks of a girl's life. Without knowing anyone in her city , she tries to be elected to a city, county, or state office. Besides these roles as an active citizen at city and county levels, a girl is also a member of a certain party and must be loyal to that party. Each party has to screen candidates to find the best ones for their support, organize their convention, and draw up a platform. The two parties, the Nationalists and Federalists, each have a conven- tion. They elect their candidates for Governor, Lt. Governor, At- torney General, Secretary of State, and Supreme Court Justices. All of this is an exact simulation of the state's government and how it is run. lt would be great if every person could experience this. lt would better each person. What constitutes a Good Citizen ? - dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. These are the qualities on which the National Society of the Daughters ofthe American Revolution feel Good Citizenship should be based. After a girl is selected, she is given a questionnaire. This is really a test. It asks questions based on county, state and the national levels of government. This questionnaire is judged along with all of the others. The best ones in the state are given bonds worth anywhere from S50 to 3100. lf a girl is a state winner, her questionnaire qualifies to be judged in the National Contest. The winner of this contest gets a 31,000 scholarship to the college of her choice. This program ac- knowledges those who display the qualities of a Good Citizen. It attempts to .give acclaim to as many worthy youths as possible. 24 . F--R - Doreen Compton: Girl's State Representative and Miss D.A.Ft.
