VALEDIGTORY Parents, Teachers, Classmates, and Friends: ln faith and hope the world will disagree, but all mankind's concern is charity. Let us deliberate for a few minutes the, quality that l deem most essential for a future of complete fulfillment for every graduate seated here tonight - charity, or, love of one's fellowmen. In our world today many fears, doubts, and obsessions are prevalent. It is my conviction that love - complete, unselfish, all-enveloping love - can and will efface these fears and the problems that accompany them. All forms of fear could be greatly reduced if every man would regard his neighbor as highly as himself. Why must we face fear from guided missiles, sputniks, or space? Why must we be overshadowed by a constant threat of depression or war? This fear stems indirectly from envy. Envy results in a never-ending endeavor to surpass other countries in the race for destructive weapons. Envy promotes distrust and hatred. Obliterate envy from the face of the earth, everlasting peace and harmony will be the end result - the result of self- less love. All for love, and nothing for reward. How many of us live accordingly? Too many of us feel that we have enough problems of our own, without be- coming involved in those of others. Consequently, we usually take much effort to avoid the problems of others and concentrate only on our own. Those who continuously focus all attention on self and dodge the adversities of others actually lead very incomplete lives. Let us love our fellowmen as well as our- selves! Eventually our rewards will be many times as great. The sooner we realize that love is necessary for lasting peace, the sooner we shall discover that it is of great importance, world-wide importance, that we put ourselves to the trouble and inconvenience of helping others to bear their burdens. Not only must we love those of our own race, we must love everyone, regardless of race, creed, or nationality. Why are we troubled by such a prob- lem as segregation? Certainly, this results from a lack of love. We, as citizens of the greatest democracy in the world should hang our heads in shame that such a problem need ever arise. Here is a great need for love, a need for genuine understanding - the basis of true love. If we sincerely respect our fellowmen, we will not shun them because they are a different color or creed, because they are not so well-to-do as we, or because they speak a foreign lan- guage. Segregation is one of many problems that arise when one does not re- spect his fellowmen! lf we truly love all people, their color will not be a decide-d factor when we choose companions. All men are created equal, and in my esti- mation they should be regarded as equal by all. Only then can we sincerely say that we love our neighbor as ourselves - His command to mankind. It is with a deep and abiding knowledge of the tremendous part that love for our fellowmen must play in our future lives, that we, the senior class of 1958, bid you - parents, teachers, and friends - farewell. Thus l extend a sincere and earnest wish that each of us here tonight goes forth realizing with St. Paul, that, .... if l have prophecy and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains, yet do not have charity, I am nothing. Thank you, Veronica Andrews, Valedictorian vu-v1 v'r -W. -----Ivmsul,-.W-.. ,.-.--- .-.. Y., .W . ..-.,...,.s.-...W-Y ---..-W-w - . SALIITATURY Parents, Faculty, Friends, and Fellow Classmates: lt is with pride, honor, and humility that I, as a representative of my class, welcome you to this twelfth annual class day of Bedford High School. Our earnest wish is that you may enjoy reminiscing with us, and that at the same time you may catch some of the glow of the genuine accomplishments, the high ideals, and the worthwhile goals that we have attained during our high school years. Surely graduation time is a milestone that marks a period of happiness in the life of each senior. What is this happiness? Happiness is the mental state of contentment which comes from successful adaptation to the world as it really is. Realizing this, brings to mind, that in order to conceive happiness in life we must possess a pur- pose or a goal. Just as each part of nature has its designed function, so do we on earth have a destined purpose. Without it we would drift like a helmless vessel upon a storm-tossed sea. Purpose is synonymous with happiness, con- tentment comes from contributing to the welfare and happiness of others - being useful. It has been said that no man can live who regards himself alone, who turns everything to his own advantage. Thou must live for another, if thou wishest to live for thyself. That action is best which procures happiness for the greatest number of people. It is of paramount importance that we fill our intended place and give to the world of our talents. What establishes happiness? As a man thinketh in his heart so is he. Pro- verbs 23:7. The thoughts which nestle within us, rule our acts and emotions, and shape our future, determining success or failure. Happiness is success. Therefore, is it as essential to control our thoughts as it is to control our actions? Men of wisdom learn to control their thoughts, to act constructively and bene- ficially. Circumstances and situations determine our thoughts, but the inquisi- tive mind chooses our habitual concepts that make up our moral character, our attitude toward life. As Tennyson says, l am a part of all that I have met. Consequently we make or mar our happiness by our thoughts. Right concepts of life bring about high ideals. As pioneers reached their destination by using the stars as their guide, so let us use our ideals as guides to our destiny - secured in happiness. CLASS HISTURY Parents, Faculty, Classmates, and Friends, This afternoon we would like to take you with us back in memory to relive the events that we, the class of '58, have shared in the past four years of high school. Going' back to September, 1954, we find ourselves entering the halls of Bedford as freshmen. There we were, strangers, coming into an unknown, and new environment. We had new friends to meet and a large'building in which to learn which class was where. We were unorganized, but soon we had our 'first class meeting. For officers we elected Chuck Nevers, president, Bonnie Brown, vice-president, Claude Rauch, secretary, Jana Eberhardt, treasurer, and Alice Krosschell, Stephanie Ludwikowski, Joe Hallauer, and Jim Storer, student council rep- resentatives. Miss Mowry, Mrs. Tussing, and Mr. Miller became our advisors. During our freshman year we gave our first dance, the Shamrock Swirl, and Sucille Stout was our leprechaun. We also had a paper and scrap metal drive, collected tax stamps, and sold Easter candy. Remember how the bunnies melted and ran in'l9B? For being the best salesmen in our magazine sales, watches were awarded to linda Carter and Kathryn Shaffer. The proceeds from these activities were placed in our class treasury. September, 1955, found us starting our sophomore year. Now that we had become accustomed to the routine of the high school program, we were ready for the road ahead. We had our first class meeting and elected Terry Miller, president, Marcia Sattler, vice-president, Veronica Andrews, secretary, James Kerekes, treasurer, and Sharon Hakeos, Mary Abel, Ray Barnhart, and Don DeArmond, student council representatives. Mr. Miller left Bedford, and Mr. Eyler became one of our advisors. Our activities to increase our treasury this year were the collection of tax stamps, another paper drive, the making and selling of Christmas corsages and earrings, and another magazine sale, in which Nancy Baker won a camera and John Paschen won a record player for selling the highest number of subscriptions. At our sophomore dance, the Sweetheart Swing, a huge red oilcloth stuffed heart and a smaller cupid were given as prizes. Alice Connor was selected Queen of Hearts, and Bill Dodds was our King of Hearts. Another proiect was the selling of Valentine corsages and candy. This time the candy was kept in cool 6E. This year we ordered our class rings, which we expected to receive the following October. We were really excited be- cause they were a new style, and we were looking forward to wearing them. Marcia Sattler took second place in the annual United Nations Contest sponsored by the local Oddfellows and Rebeccas. A third September found us in our iunior year. We were beginning to realize how fast the school year can go. We were now one step closer to the final goal. We lost a dear friend with Mr. Facklam's death, but we gained a new one in Mr. Maschke. At our first class meeting we elected Ned Kubitz, president, James Kerekes, vice-president, Karma Yeager, secretary, Veronica Andrews, treasurer, and Judy Schafer, Sucille Stout, Dennis Segur, and Bill Wood, student council representatives. We received our class rings in October. They were a new style with a slant, and our initials were on the opposite diagonal corners. Among our activities this year, we' had the dances at the school after the home basketball games and the Turkey Trot. For this event Susan Gill, Stephanie ludwikowski, and Sharon Werdehoff dressed as scarecrows. Patty Kronk's sister won the live turkey which was given as a door prize. Our iunior play was You Can't Kiss Caroline , under the direction of Mr. Gerald Liebau, Marcia Sattler was the student director. ln the cast were Susan Gill as Ma Rand, Don Putinta, Milt, Ray Barnhart, Johnnie, and Jim Storer Howie, Judy Hausmann took the part of Bunny, Dawn Blackford, Pat, Alice Krosschell, Shirley, and Sucille Stout, Jeannette. Karma Yeager was Sally, Karen Ranke, Caroline, Nancy Elsea, Susie, and Nancy Baker, Miss Jameson. Ta advertise this play, Mrs. Schmokel of the Mules Corral concocted and served Caroline Floats. Two honors came to our class when Veronica Andrews as a iunior received the title of Bedford Football Queen, and Karen Ranke reigned as Lambertville Homecoming Queen. We decided to contribute toward the scoreboard for the stadium as our gift to the school. Bob Swehla, Judy Schafer, Sharon Rogge, Marcia Sattler, Veronica Andrews, and Ellen Stroud received member- ship into the National Honor Society for having met their qualifications and standards. Our entire iunior year came to a happy climax when We honored the senior class with a prom at the Toledo Club on May 19 with Jack Runyan's orchestra playing. The theme was Over the Rainbow. Now with present memories we find ourselves on the final step, our senior year, which will prepare and lead us to a higher goal and success. We look back over the years we have spent in Bedford and realize how the time has flown by. In organizing our senior class for the iob ahead of us we elected Gary Roscoe, president, Paul Shaffer, vice-presi- dent, Joyce Schmokel, secretary, Judy Schafer, treasurer, and Susan Gill and James Storer, student council representatives. Three honors came to our class this year. Bob Swehla was chosen by the student body as president of the student council. Karen Ranke was chosen Red Feather Queen, not only of Bedford, but also of Monroe county. Ellen Stroud placed first in Bedford in the Homemaker of Tomorrow Contest. This year Raymond Barnhart and Terry Miller were accepted into the National Honor Society. We had charge of the dances at school after the home football games. The senior play was You Can't Take lt With You , with Mrs. Salter as director and Nancy Elsea as student director. ln the cast there were Ray Barnhart as Grandpa, Judy Hausmann, Mrs. Sycamore, Alice Krosschell, Essie, Bruce Vogel, Ed, Ernest Guy, Mr. Henderson, and Ned Kubitz, Donald. Sucille Stout took the part of Olga, John Paschen, Kolenkov, Bob Coghlin, Mr. DePinna, Brenda Caldwell, Alice, Dennis Segur, Tony, Susan Gill, Mrs. Kirby, and Jim Storer, Mr. Kirby, ose Couch was Mr. Sycamore, Bonnie Brown, Rheba, and Ed Jones and Beverly Schnaak, Justice Agents. We had our senior pictures taken in November and received them in December. We were measured for our caps and gowns,'and we ordered our invitations and name cards. Hopefully we tried for several scholarships. ln May the iunior class honored us with a prom. Now remains only our commencement, which will serve as the last event in our history together as a class. However, as we take our places in a complex society, we will treasure these memorable years. which have prepared us for the future as an individual in a growing and prosperous nation.
