Mew Parents Faculty Classmates and Frrends For us the members of the graduatrng class of 1952 th1s1s an evenrng whrch has been symbolrc of the years of apprentlceshlp whrch are now raptdly draw 1ng to a close They have been for us a tlme of Joy and hope tempered wrtn work an occaslonal sorrow and somet1mes almost complete despatr But through them all has run the deep current of love and affectron w1th whlch our parents and teachers have never farled to strengthen us Now at th1s moment as never before we have come to real1ze that the trme IS approaching when we rnust take our place 1U the world of men and serve as the wellsprtng of 1nsp1rat1on and courage for those who Wlll follow ln our paths Perhaps the words of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow rn all the1r slmple elo quence can crystalllze for us here tonlght the thoughts and feellngs whlch are str1v1ng for consclous real1zat1on In hts st1rr1ng poem the Psalm of Llfe he counsels us tn th1s manner Lrves of great men all rernrnd us We can make our lrves subl1me When departrng leave behrnd us Pootprlnts 1n the sands of trme Let us then be up and dolng W1th a heart for any fate Sttll ach1ev1ng sttll pursutng Learn to labor and to wart What a challenge these words brtng to us tonrghtl Down the long and torturous paths of htstory have walked many men who have rndeed set an ex ample for us As th1s challenge IS before us we must ask ourselves what per sonal qualttles these men possessed that enabled them to leave the1r footprtnts rn the sands of tzrne The tralts that constttute a person of true Worth have been embodred rn one of our greatest Amerrcans Abraham Ltncoln He possessed above all a srncere humrllty that endeared hlm to the hearts of the mtghty and made h1m a champron of the weak Th1s story of the great man has been gtven to us by One nrght he dreamed that he was rn a crowd when someone recognrzed hun as the Presldent and exclarrned rn surprtse He IS a very common lookrng man Whereupon Llncoln answered Frrend the Lord prefers common lookmg people That 15 the reason he makes so many of them Although we are sornetlmes 1ncl1ned to thlnk of Lrncoln as a man of great sertousness one who carrled the heavy werght of personal sorrow as well as that of hrs less fortunate brothers he drd tn real1ty have a most dellghttul sense of humor as necessary 1n those troubled days as rn our tlme And who IS there that can auestlon the honesty lntegrtty and tolerant attrtude that he prac trced rn hrs affa1rs'? Wlth these qualttles set before us we shall be better able to face the sertous ness of world condltlons However merely meetlng the world as rt ts IS not enough Constant and purposeful strtdes must be made toward a better tomorrow Our prtmary goal must be a world rn whrch there exrsts a Just and perma nent peace Our whole generatlon was concerved and reared durlng a ttme when war seemed to be the rule rather than the exceptlon Shall our entrre ltves be spent tn the shadow of fear of even greater and more terrible v1olence'? No NG must strrve to develop an attttude of tolerance and mutual respect and above all a f1rm belref rn the d1gn1ty of the 1nd1v1dual man Wtth our srghts set on such a course great advances can be made 1n the scrences arts and humanrtres for all down to the most humble among us For 1f there IS even one among us who rs 1n need can we rest sat1sf1ed Wlth our labors?
