All schools endeavor to prepare their students for the roles they will face as adults. For early Bedford schools, this meant teaching stu- dents to read, to write, and to use arithmetic. However, today's jobs call for more complex training. Stu- dents can now take courses in vo- cational preparation and on-the-job training. Besides giving students book learning, schools also try to build character. Competition is used to teach students to give their ut- most during the game, but to for- get rivalry afterward. The Golden Years have brought many changes in the role of extra-curricular activities. Some modern students spend their leisure time in a carefree manner, but most choose to join clubs to gain experience in competing for recogni- tion. Today emphasis is laid on the betterment of the entire organization rather than one person.
