A Large part of the hfe of B.HS The Block B, symbol of Bedford Highls rising school spirit, was started at the first of the basketball season this year. Thanks go to the Student Council-to Paula Thomas, who played a major part in organizing the Block B, and to Mr. Coombs, the sponsor, for its big success. The gym holds dear memories of bitter defeats and striking victories between long-time rivals. 1 The big moment has arrived and the team goes into the huddle for last minute instructions and reassurance of winning an important game. And all through the town- Maryann MePike and Paula Thomas look very encr- getic as they start out to sell their allotted traditional Christmas holly. The selling of holly wreaths and pine doorknockers every Christmas is the major money raising project of the senior class. The gifts for the school and faculty, and the expenses of senior week take care of all the money made from the project. XY'e are happy to report that this year, as last year, every holly wreath and doorknocker, 800 items in all, was sold by our hardworking senior class. l This page is sponsored by CITIZENS NATIONAL BANK Bill Gulzlrwrl rrouvlx Bwfzi Mui Qncrrl nl IlIHll1'Li0NlffIKQ Dann' The first Homecoming in the history of Bedford High School was held on October 16, 1953, at the Bedford football field at our last home game of the 1953-'54 season. One candidate from each class was chosen by her class- mates for Homecoming Queen, from these the football team and coaches named the Queen. The girls chosen for queen were: Marlene Casada, seniorg Barbara Rothrock, junior, Becky May, sophomore, and Ann Hall, freshman. Becky May was chosen to reign as the Hrst Queen of the first homecoming. Sections of the bleachers were reserved for the alumni of the last five years and the classes were introduced during half time. The climax of the Homecoming, the crowning of the Queen, took place previous to the major game. The four candidates were presented in convertibles that paraded around the field, and then the girls were escorted by a member of the team to the designated crowning spot. Bill Gabbert, acting football captain, named and crowned Becky May as Queen on behalf of the team after expressing his gratitude to the many persons who made our home- coming possible. A Homecoming Dance held at the Youth Center immediately following the game concluded this historical event. APPRECIA TION should be our watch word for 1953 and 1954, because we have received so much. From him who has greatly received, much is expected-and surely our community has a right to expect great things from Bedford High School in appreciation for what it has given us. The thin .r you We had Iaere H. H. Mourer, superintendent of schools, probably has much on his mind also as he readies himself for one more ac- tive school day. His job is one that carries much responsibility and he undoubtedly appreciates all the cooperation and help given him by students, faculty and com- munity. H. A. Lloyd, high school principal, smiles faintly as he prepares to enter B. H. E. for another busy day. When he gets into the building, Mr. Lloyd will probably have to confront numerous complaints, problems, and ideas all in the day's work. XVe should appreciate and re- spect the consolation and advice given by our patient principal. And so another day Dr. Roland Wfynne, consulting school physician, checks the hearts of the girls in the gym classes. As school doctor, Dr. W'ynne checks hearts, puts on and checks TB patches, checks teeth, and is responsible for reports of school acci- dents and health problems. of Work and Worvy The secretaries and treasurers have more than just a few problems accompanying their work. llrx. Mildred Corju. infwrirzlmilwzik xfrri' A. W. Miller, attendance supervisor, is a handy man for school officials to have around when spring arrives. He's a handy man to have around, period, for he not only checks on delinquents but reports needy cases to the proper olhcials and many adults as well as students have profited by his kindly care. School nurse, Joyce Mcpike, examines sister Maryann's throat to see if all is well. Miss McPike helps Dr. Wynne with his checkings, examines the eyes and ears of all grade children, and helps plan the spring roundup. The school board must function with great care since their actions affect everyone in the community. They pass on and make plans for projects each school year, and are responsible for all material and building additions to the schools. furry: Mrs. Maxim'W'uI1i,frvu.x14ri-rg Mrs, Rm- Seated: Mr. Kurzriulfi Pl1mznn'r, Mrs. Durnlliy Ifillriisfmz, Mr. H. Hervey of the Gridiron COACHES This year's football team lacked a number of thingsg among them were size and experience. But our team fought hard all year and came through with a victory over Mitchellg probably the hardest fought battle in the history of the six-year rivalry between the two schools. The season was ended victoriously with a 7-6 win over Moorcsville.
