SOWDER FERRIS YOUNG H. C. SPEAR H. H. MOURER i' i I' WARREN I, YOU NT Mr. Warren I. Yount, the superintendent of the Bedford City Schools, has, in the years of his work in Bedford, established himself among the leaders that have fostered, extended, and improved the school system of Bedford. During the period of Mr. Yount's superintendency the grade buildings have seen much beautification by landscaping, as has the high school. Builings have been improved, new machinery has been bought, new appliances for vocational departments have been purchased-all these having been made possible by the management and the well-balanced budgeting of Mr. Yount. The Bedford Schools have also been faced in the last few years by the retire- ment and the resignation of a number of their most able instructors, but through his knowledge, his influence, his judgment, and his superb management Mr. Yount has been able to keep up the traditional standards of Bedford's school teachers. The Pioneer , therefore, salutes you and your work, Mr. Yount. i' 1' 'k H. H. MOURER Distinguished in the services of Bedford School is Mr. Harry H. Mourer, our principal. For the eight years that Mr. Mourer has been in charge of Bedford High Shool it has made definite steps in inter-scholastic achievements. It has been during this period that students of Bedford High School have achieved outstanding scholastic, speech, dramatic, commercial, and journalistic awards, as well as those in sports. The success of Bedford's students can be accredited, to a large extent, to Principal Mourer-through his interest, his initia- tive, his competent management, and his cooperation with students and faculty. Mr. Mourer is also dean of boysg in this task he is equally competent. By his friendliness, his patience, his consideration, and his ability to understand the problems of the students he has gained their confidence and their support. The Pioneer of l938 salutes you, Mr. Mourer. secf-eta im SUIOGPVISOFS sannan inalana normal cnliaaa an UJITCDKII, lnaiana 4 1880 - '59 f fx N fi! NM Q ffffl 'fx-llx'-Nw naw? M J , A V A . A . 115 .. Wimpy jumps in where other players fear to tread. His jumping and scrapping for the recovery of the ball is almost incredulous but more than that, he covers the entire floor in less time than anyone else on the squad. Donald McLeod, junior of six feet and we'ghing l7O pounds, has played as guard. He is the only underclassman on the Stonecutter's outfit. Don has played good ball all season and we hope to have him next year as a nucleus to build around. Claude Cecil Boruff, a senior who is five feet nine inches tall, weighs l55 pounds. Many have been the times when Claude has been called upon to do his share, and he always does it well. Claude has been a member on the varsity for two years and impresses every one with his good sportsman- ship, speed, and accurate long shots. Owen Shorty Roberts, a senior who plays center, is six feet four inches tall and weighs l9O pounds. His ability to control the tip and the ball in under the basket has made him a four year member of the team. Owen's good-naturedness and acquiescence to fair play marks him as a good sport. Harry Lee, a senior guard, six feet tall, weighs l55 pounds. Even though his ranking in the scoring column is not the highest, his cagey ballhandling and teamwork characterize him as a member in worthy standing of one of the finest ball clubs B. H. S. has had. john Torphy, the twister shot artist, who time after time pulled Bedford thru with his freak port-sided shots won state-wide attention, this, his third year on the team, and gained a position on the all star first team. john, high point man is a senior, six feet tall and weighs l72 pounds. Bill Torphy, too, is a senior, six feet one inch tall and weighs l75 pounds. Bill, a dependable, quiet, calm, steady, hard-fighting guard, was Bedford's floor general. Bill also won state acclaim for his remarkable guarding'in the State tournament. Charley Torcl1y Caress has been playing heads up ball all year and 'ended a brilliant athletic high school career at tournament time. lt was his foul shot and basket which broke up the regional game with Seymour. Charley, a senior, is five feet eleven and weighs l7O pounds. Eugene Cy Perkins, red headed senior, six feet three inches tall, and weighs l7O pounds, plays as center and pivot man. Cy is always in the scramble under the basket. He's of great value to the team because of his speedy cooperation, Cy is a regular scorer and has a determined fighting spirit. The demonstration of his ability in such games as those with Fort Wayne and New Albany gained Perkins state-wide recognition. leagues Qwlflf?
