Once again we see ourselves, timid and lonely, entering the labyrinth of the Minotaur, engulfed in its maze and with no silken thread to guide us to the rooms for which we Sought. To the accumulated widsom of the upper-classmen we listened breathlessly. But we emerged from the fire courageous and with many honors. The Class spirit, the scholastic records, the athletes, students of oratorical and reading ability, the oflce-holders, the journalistic students-all helped to make the Class of ,33 a pre-eminent success. Many have been the honors which the members of the Class of '33 have brought the school. Daniel Sherwood, Henrietta Hutton,iMaZrgaret Powers, and Marguerite Jones have won honors in the Latin Contests. J. W. Shaver, Robert Plummer, Harold Bennett, Betty Rainbolt received recognition in South Central Orotorical Contest, Reading Contest and Public Discussion. Robert Plummer and Harold Bennett were for four years members of the Boy's Varsity Team. Josephine Mosier, Marian Mitchell, Icel Jackman, Frances Edmands, Lora June Owens, and Betty Rainbolt held positions on the Girlis Varsity Debate Team. Bernard Parham, Horace Richardson, and Dwight Perkins were familar figures on the Basketball floor. Loren Oliver, Frank Duncan, Norwood Ross, Dexter Calvin, and Harold Wykoff were Heldmen. Frank May, Mary Carter, Angela Scherschel, Ruth Younger, Catherine Roberts, and Mildred Maick were faithful members of the Student Staff. This is the chief work of the club. Mr. McFadden and Mr. Krausbeck, two of Bedford's history teachers, are sponsors of this organization. The official staff of the lnternational Club is comprised of a President, James Guthrieg Sarah .lane French, Vice-President, and Evalon Wray, Secretary-Treasurer. W'illiam Easton entertained the club on various occasions with descriptions of his European travels. This was in keeping with the members' interests in foreign countries. As further evidence of the lnternational Club's interest in foreign affairs is the fact that it, together with similar clubs in different schools, has enrolled as a member of the League of Nations Contest. ln the February meeting, Miss Roberts and Miss VVoolery entertained the club with delightful tales of their European travels. At the March meeting, Reverend Niven gave the club some new concepts as to Europe. Travel pictures were shown at two meetings. A Russian movie climaxed the regular program of the year. INTERNATIONAL CL UB THE HISTORY CLUB The History Club has become one of the most outstanding organizations of bcdloid High School. It is amazing how many students, who have no taste whatsoever for plain, simple history as taught in the classes. have a membership in this club. Pcrhaps it is because of the programs. Perhaps it is because of the sponsor, Nliss Lomax. Perhaps they like to select competent officers. At any rate, students seem to engage in this club. The officers this year are as follows: Lora June Owens, President: liroolxs Wynne, Vice-President, Frances Edmands, Secretary-Treasurer, Ruth Younger, Chairman Pro- gram Committee. At Christmas time a clever little sketch was presented as a part ol' the program. It used Mr. Yount and his family as make-believe characters in a nialxc-believe, typical Christmas story. The History Club early in the year. sponsored a convocation program for thc entire student body. Mr. W. E. Clark, eminent lawyer of the city made an interesting address on George Washington's life-a very appropriate topic for the bicentennial year. Each year a sum of money is given to the school in order that new books may he purchased and placed in the library. Rev. Black's lecture on Grant at the Nlarch meeting was one of the vcry best pro- grams, ever given by the club. THE JUNIOR LATIN CLUB The Junior Latin Club, sponsored by Miss Roberts and Xliss Newsom, meets the first Tuesday of each month. The membership. which is composed wholly of 9l3's. is approximately one hundred. The officers for this year are: Charles Acton. President, Geraldine Shaver. Secre- taryg Raleigh Quackenbush. Treasurer: Kathryn Klinger. Chairman of the Program Committee. The Junior Latin Club, as well as the Senior. carries out a special motifi each month pertaining to the connection of our holidays with those of the Romans. The main purpose of the club is to give its members an accurate description of the home life of the Romans, that is, ideas not obtained in the Latin class room, and to promote a general interest in the subject. A short dialogue was given at one of the early meetings of the year entitled, 4'What's the Use of Latin. This skit showed the Latin derivation of many of our English words. The outstanding points stressed in the club this year, were Roman customs. songs, rccitations, a Latin play and a prophecy. Miss Roberts also read several Roman poems and stories to the group. Students interested in Latin, who are taking. or have taken this subject, may belong to this organization, The Senior Latin Club. lt also meets on the first Tuesday of each month under the sponsorship of Miss Painter. The ollicers of this cluh are: Daniel Sherwood, Presidentg Mary Jeanette Henderson, Secretaryg .limmy Guthrie, Treasurer, Henrietta Hutton. Chairman of the Program Committee. The orgauization's programs tend to carry out all the high points and holidays in the month. such as in October, they brought ,forth the idea of prophecy, in November, they emphasized the Roman Thanksgiving. in December. Roman songs were sung. and in February. the ,luniors and Seniors met for a joint meeting and enjoyed a Roman play about the life of George Washington. The clulfs funds. derived from annual dues. are used partly for the purchasing of medals and awards for winners of the Latin Contests. The llistrict Latin Contest was held this year at liedford, and the two clubs furnished a convocation period for the high school body. as nell as for thc entertainment of the out-of-toon guests. THE SENIOR LATIN CLUB BLUE TRIANGLE One of the most active elubs of Bedford High School is the Blue Triangle. For years they have held a prominent place in the minds of the school because of their varied activities. Going to conventions, introduring magiciansg and making money. This year it sent out Thanksgiving and lIhristmas baskets to the needy, .sponsored an auditorium and Girls meeting. and served, with the cooperation of their mothers. the State Home Economies Convention held here in March. The Blue Triangle is the older girls' group of the Girl Reserves. Every member is either a junior or a senior in school. The Girl Reserves are a nation-wide organization for girls of high school age who are willing to help in welfare work. The Blue Triangle is under the supervision ot' Nliss lielva H. Newsom, member of the school staff. Every year, two representatives are sent to the Girl Reserves camp, Camp Gray. Last year, these were Sara ,lane French and Xlargaret Nlefjlellan. Chosen otiicers are: Nlary Pence. Presidentg Josephine Nlosier, Yiee-President: Wilma Lyon. Secretary: and Nita Inman. Treasurer. Similar in organization to the Blue Triangle is the Silver Triangle, 4-omposed of freshnten and sophomore girls. The organization tneets the first and third Tuesdays of the montll. This group of the Girl Reserves has been organized for nine years and is accredited with the largest enrollment of any club in the school. Nlutzh ot' the credit is due to the two interested and efficient sponsors, Miss Newsom, and Nliss Priest, both members of the school faculty. Offivers elected by popular vote, are: June Zettergren. l'residentg Sara ,lane French, Vice-Presidentg Marian White. Secretaryg and Genevieve Johnson, Treasurer. Members of the advisory council for both the Silver and Blue Triangle are Mrs. W. ,l. Yount. Nlrs. H. H. Hourer, Mrs. C. S. Black. Hrs. Nergil Bruce. Nlrs. Cleve Bowden and Mrs. Lora Held. who meet with the sponsors ot' the groups and decide im- portant questions concerning the club. One of the most interesting meetings was held in the auditorium with the other triangle in which Bliss Teare, who was in charge of the program. showed several inter- esting news reels to the group. There are more than one hundred members in this organization. SILVER TRIANGLE HI-Y i933 is the seventh anniversary of the lli-Y Club. organized for the purpose of creating and maintaining throughout the school and community high standards of Christian character. The motto of the club Clean Speech. Clean Living. Clean Scholarship. and Clean Sportsmanship. For the convenience of the students. the lli'Y Club operates a st-t-oiul-lnunl hook store in Room 8 under the direction of Hr. Stuckey. the sponsor. Elected by the club to aut as delegates. Urdie lilackburn. Robert llull. Carl Harris. and Charles Smith, under the leadership of Joseph Caesar attended the Older Hoys Conference, held at New Castle. November 25. 26, 27. 1932. One of the yearly traditions of the club is to attend in a body the cliurch services of the Baptist Church, this being done on February 19. The climax of the entertainment Cotnntitter-'s work was aeltieved when a Weiner roast and party was held at l.anz's Cabin. The meetings of the club are held every Thursday evening in the high school library. Twice a year officers are elected for the club. The following officers have given their best ability and efforts in making the cluh a stuuzt-ss for the school year: Harold Vlfykoff, President: lfugene Peek, Vice-l'residentg Charles Smith, Secretaryg Orflie Blackburn. Treasurer: Charles Lanz. Sargeunlait-Mins. The purpose of the Knights of the Drawing lloard is the promotion and explana- tion of the stone industry. This is done by levtures given by prominent men of the industry or by the students themselves. The sponsor of the club, Nlr. Crandall. is a diligent worker, who. as one boy says, has a nature that understands boys. The organization this year has had varied programs. ln addition to those ol' an educational nature, were those social gatherings. The party was held at Camp Bedford. lt must have been 4'some party. ln the spring a weiner roast attracted the members and their friends. ,Xbout a month after school begins, the iniliatory meeting is held. This is most dreaded by the new members, probably because of the exaggerated reports that follow eatvh yearly session. Underneath the surface of all this playful spirit is a desire to learn and to do, which always characterizes the club. The l,fUl1E'f'I' is especially grateful for the work done for them by members of the vlub and others of the drafting classes in making signs for the gym. The work was well done and with the finest spirit. To another member, Harold Heath. goes the credit for hours of careful lettering on all full page engravings in this hook. The girls have black and white uniforms while the boys do not have any special dress. Many new songs have been learned this year. At Christmas the club sang carols al the various schools of the cityg they also sang for the Rotary and Kiwanis clubs at the Creystone Hotel. lt has always been the custom for the Glee Club to present an operettag the one given this year was the gypsy operetta, entitled, Chonita. Any one who has had art at some time or other. may become a member of this organization. Students taking art in the regular classes. should. by all means, become members of this organization. Many interesting and varied programs have been presented at the meetings during the year. In this club artistically inclined students have ample room in which to give their ideas full sway, and to increase their knowledge of paintings and artists. The club is sponsored by Miss Ross and meets the first Monday in each month. Officers are elected at the beginning of each semester. The 0lTlI'Cl'S for this year are: Elbert Burton, President: William Bickenlieuser, Yice-Presidentg Bernard Lancaster, Secretary and Avahnelle Craig, Treasurer. The art work for the 1933 Pioneer was done by the'art classes. The Pioneer wishes to take this opportunity to express its appreciation for the work. Each year the club purchases for the high school a painting, done by an lndiana artist. Many of the paintings now hanging on the high school walls were bought in former years by this organization. ART CLUB l THE DEBATE LEAGUE The Debate League, which is under the direction ol Nliss Gunn and Nlr. Grider, has been a training school for many of our orators and varsity debaters and so may it continue in the future. Debating is very interesting and the league gives the young orator an opportunity Io advance. Two members ol this year's league are members of the Cirl's Debate Team. The debates are held each Wednesday afternoon and topics of local. state and national importance are subjects for discussions. Nlembers of the faculty and members of the varsity Debate Team act as judges. The league is divided into five teams and the captains are: John lllclseod, Everett Taylor, Marian Mitchell, lcel Jackman and Simpson Purlec. The officers are Everett Taylor, President and Marian Mitchell, Secretary. Representative subjects from this year's schedule were: Resolved that: 'ihlilitary drill should be compulsory in all high schools of the United States, '4Old Age pensions should be provided hy Indiana, The water-power resources of the U. should be owned and operated by the Federal government. l'Athletics of B. H. S. are over- emphasized, and This school should publish a monthly magazine rather than a school annual. The cup was won by the team consisting of lcel Jacknian. Geraldine Shaver, and Fred Hutton. Tl1e Commerce Club during its ten years of existence in Bedford High School has endeavored to establish in commerce students a closer contact and keener interest with the business world ol today. Newer methods of manufacturing and carrying on industries are being brought before the students in the meetings. :Xnother progressive move is being forwarded by bringing before the club members new words which have added to the English language. The requirements to he eligible for membership are to take some commerce subject and to be either a ,lunior or Senior. Programs of the Club are on the basis of business and recreational projects. Notable business and professional men and women of Bedford are brought to the meetings who discuss and make clear the commercial advantages found in their work. During this year the club visited various business plants of this city. Visits included the Bedford Daily Times newspaper olhce, banks, creameries, laundries, and the stone industries. The climax of the entertainment committee was achieved when a Christmas play and skating party was given. The officers are Daniel Sherwood, Prcsidcntg Mary Pence, Vice-Presidentg ,leanette Chcnault, Secretary-Treasurer. The sponsors of the Club are Miss Dodt and Nliss liodarmel. THE COMMERCE CLUB LITERARY CLUB The purpose of the Literary Club, under the sponsorship of Miss Durrenberger, is to study the present clay literature which is not included in the regular English course. The club is open to all high school pupils who may be interested, and this year it has an cnrollment of about fifty members. which is the maximum number. The past year has been spent in reviewing worth-while books and magazine articles. This clttb has offered a better insight into the field of literary culture to many. The meetings of the club are held the fourth Thursday of each month in Session 45. The work of this year also included an interesting presentation on the stage of the auditorium for the student body. A social affair is always held at Christmas time when gills are exchanged in the midst ol' Christmas decorations, and a long hike or some other kind of outsdoor amuse- ment is enjoyed by all in the spring. The officers of this club are: l.ora .lune Owens, Presitlentg Mary E. Evans. Vice- Fresidentg and Frances Fdtnands. Secretary-Treasurer. The success this year has bt-en accredited to these girls and also to their sponsor. Miss llurrcnberger. Composed exclusively ol some twenty-live French students, the working-plan of the French Club is takcn from the French standpoint --French menus and notebooks. French people, French language. and French emotions and customs. Aside from regular class work. the French classes prepare notebooks to bc displayed at their club meeting. The activities of the club are an extension ol' class study. that is, such things that would take time out of the school period. Scheduled club meetings are the second Monday of each month. Prograrnmes are under the supervision of the Chairman of the Programme Committee, Anna Louise Erwin. The officers elected for this year were: Marian Nlitchell, Mademoiselle la Presidenteg Charles Eckert, le Vice-Presidenteg William Hickenlieuser, le Secretaireg and ,-Mina l.ouise Frwin, Chairman of the Programme Committee. A display of French lace, money and pictures was given at one of the club meetings hy William Easton, a member who has been to France. At another meeting. notebooks made by the 9l3's and 9fVs were shown. These notebooks were composed ol' clippings from American literature of, or pertaining to France. Last year, a play in French, Cinderella . was presented to Bedford High School in an auditorium sponsored by French students in the French Club. Horace Richardson Horsey, easily rated as Indiana's outstanding center, was a mainstay in coach Ivey's smooth running machine. Dwight Perkins Playing his last of three years with the Cutters, Perk flashed his best form. It was mighty hard for the opponents to get around Perkins and although not high scorer he deserves all the praise given him. Dale Hutt Having previously played at Frankfort, Hutt came to Bedford to win a berth on the Ivey crew. Hutt's ability to gain possession of the ball enabled the Stonecutters to win many games. Hutt is also a sophomore and will be back next year. Wesley Heath L'Wes , a reserve from last year, alternates with Perkins at guard and can be depended upon to add points to the score.
