Fco Wd Co lie MS 3 Missile Bedford High School Bedford, Massachusetts 1983 DEDICATION Wc the class of 1983 would like to dedicate our yearbook to our class advisor, Mr. Keup. His thoughtful leadership has allowed us to raise sufficient funds for our proms and other expenses. He has also been invaluable with his support of our class officers and our prom committee. In addition. Mr. Keup is a science teacher and the girls ' cross country coach. Even though he is very busy, Mr. Keup has always given us all of the help that we need. The class of 1983 would like to thank Mr. Keup, for his continued support and helpful assistance. William K. Keup SPECIAL THANES.... ... Bedford Frofessional Bldg. 50 Loomis Street Bedford, Mass. 01730 Mrs. Chamberlain has been a lT[oo?i ctary in the student office for thirteen years. She is perfect for a job in a school because she loves kids and is nice to everybody. Providing the students with a mother figure, she is happy to take anyone under her wing of warmth and guidance. We feel that she is a very important part of a student ' s experi- ence at Bedford High School and we would therefore like to give her our special thanks. Mrs. MacLeod, an occupational resource center coordi- nator, works in the counseling office. Hers is the smiling face that meets the bewildered students at the door. When seniors are working on their applications for college, she is willing to help with any problems that they may encounter. We would also like to give our special thanks to Mrs. MacLeod. Margaret Thatcher I h| 4 iP VALEDICTORIAN Elizabeth D. Telford When asked. ' What is the purpose of high school? most people would instinctively say that it is for gaining knowledge. Of course this is true, but to me high school is not just a place to learn who won the War of 1812 or what a coulomb is. High school, both inside and outside the classroom, is a place to leam how to work, how to play, how to laugh, how to cry. how to be an individual, and how to be a friend. Unlike the factual information, which certainly may benefit you but may also lie stagnant in the dark recesses of your brain, these lessons will guide and aid you throughout the rest of your life. The student on the track team, although he or she may not win. leams that personal effort and achievement is just as satisfying as being champion. The art student on the other hand, not only develops a skill, but also a sense of patience and sensitivity which extends into other aspects of his life. Likewise, the lead in a musical or a soloist in a band concert leams to face and conquer apprehension with poise and confi- dence. However, all students, no matter what they do. realize the impor- tance of being an individual and the value of friendship. Our mentors were not kidding when they said the teenage years were emotionally trying But somehow, with laughter and the support of friends, we survive. We enter high school as insecure, but optimistic freshmen and we leave equipped with all the knowledge our teachers and experiences have given us. Perhaps we are not totally self-confident or certain of our direction in life. Vet becau:=e of our high school expjerience. we can continue to grow. Icam, and live wisely to our full capacity. 66 UNDERCLASSMEN JUNIOR CLASS _ OFFICERS Y JOYCE HENNRIKUS President I SEAN McCaffrey Vice-President I COURTENAY HAND Secretary EVAN CUTHBERT Treasurer r? It is important to note, however, that fundamentally the team showed that it was capable of playing sound baseball. Coach Sabourin feels that with a little more intensity and with a little better pitching, Bedford will be competitive and ready to challenge for the Dual County League championship. There was good team effort especially by our graduated pitcher Kathleen Davidson, and our returning junior catcher Mau- reen Bench. The team played excep- tionally well together, always anticipa- ting where the next play would be going. With a second place finish it allowed us to be in the State Softball Playoffs. Our first state game was against Marian with a 13-2 win. Then we pl ayed East Boston, who was state champs the year before, and we won that game 8-3. That put us into the quarterfinals against Ipswich, which we lost due to postponement and the se- nior prom. The Dual County All-Star representatives were graduates: Lois Farrell, Kathleen Davidson, Kristin Lunquist, and returning senior Michelle Busa. The Lowell All-Star was Lois Far- rell and Kathleen Davidson and these two were also picked as players of the year . Lois Farrell was the only team member elected as Globe Scholastic All-Star. However, we also have a lot of returning lettermen such as Keith Ciampa, Dan Colonero, Guy Monte- magno, Chris Miller, Dan Williams, Sean McCaffrey, and Jim Gettman. We look forward to a productive season in 1983. We would also like to say thanks and goodbye to Coach Hayes. He made us work hard, but he did an ex- cellent job with the team. The record, however, does not tell the story of the season. Coach Sabourin and his staff feel that this year ' s teann has restored several important qualities necessary to re- establishing the winning football tradition to Bedford High School. In spite of adversity, this year ' s team consisted of a very cohesive and dedicated group of young men. Their main characteristic was they were willing to make any sacrifice in order to achieve success. Success can be measured in many ways, but true success can only be measured when one derives the benefits of his en- deavors and when one leams to strive and reach milestones with enthusiasm. Learning about oneself and being willing to conform to group goals can be a very fulfilling experience. Though the benefits may not be obvious today, so often future success is based on past deeds and ex- periences. This may well be the case to the 1982 players. The contribution to the football tradition by the 1982 football team is the return of respect and dignity into football at Bed- ford High. We, the coaches, appreciate it and we are grateful to them. As coaches, we feel they have learned about them- selves through football and this confi- dence will be an asset to themselves in future years. Led by our tri- captains Michelle Busa, Molly Silves- trone, and Pam Wetherbee, we fought our way through one of the most diffi- cult leagues in the state and overcame many injuries. Two of our players. Michelle Busa, and Jan Hamann, were chosen for the Dual County League all star team, and both also received hon- ors from the Lowell Sun. Although we faced many obstacles, we still managed to have a great time, and we will miss our graduating seniors very much next year! Our team record was 4-8-2. We scored 9 goals and had only 1 1 scored on us. Our season consisted of 14 games. There was outstanding play by both the forwards and defense but exceptional play was performed by the defense. Outstanding play was accomplished by all members of the team with special recognition to the four young ladies who made Dual-County All-star: Capt. Marge Powderiy, Capt. Sara Folweiler, Maureen Bench and Meg Isnor, and especially to Mary Beth Conway who was our outstanding goalie. The most goals scored on us were two games by 2-0. The games were played by the Division 1 State Champs — Acton, and by the Division 2 State Champs — Weston. Each game consisted of 60 straight minutes and with Mary Beth only allowing 9 goals in the whole sea- son. One notable success was achieved by Pat Towle with his 34.6 for the 300 yard dash, setting a new B.H.S. record at this distance. In the beginning, the girls ' gymnastic team had the ability to have a winning season. But, in the end, injuries and other misfortunes had turned that theory around. Karen Donadio returned once again to coach the team. The team as a whole had a very promising start with the return of a strong and experienced Varsity squad plus a promising JV team. The team ' s performance im- proved consistantly, noted by the team score raising at each meet. This was an accomplishment because the team was up against tremendous odds, due to the lack of proper equipment to practice on. Overall, the team had a losing sea- son, but their enthusiasm was a win- ning one. it was unfortunate that the injuries had to happen and the equip- ment was less than perfect, but despite those minor setbacks the team had a great attitude throughout the otherwise disappointing season. Congrats to the 1983 gymnastic team and good luck for 1984. 135 Eugene Eagles, III. D.M.D., P.C. During his fifteen years in Bedford, he has touched the lives of many boys through his dedication and love of the game and its players. The standards he sets for the boys can best be epitomized by one of his favorite sayings. Do not pray for an easy life. Pray to be a strong person. We would like to use this page to honor Mr. Sabourin and to wish him many more victories ... on and off the field. ACTIVITIES 139 Poo-Bah, man of many titles. Yum-Yum and Naki-Poo are happy at last. THE MIKADO 4 ' . The 1982 musical comedy The Mika- do was a hit. The hilarious Gilbert and Sullivan opera was performed on three consecutive nights and attracted a massive audience for each show. The story takes place in Japan in the province of Titipu. Before the action of the opera begins, Nanki-Poo has fled from the court of his father, the Mikado of Japan, to escape marriage with an elderly lady named Katisha. Assuming the disguise of a musi- cian, he has then fallen in love with a fair maiden, Yum-Yum; but he has been pre- vented from marrying her by her guardian, Ko-Ko, who wishes to marry her himself. Ko-Ko, however, has been condemned to death for flirting, and, when Act I opens, Nanki-Poo is hastening to the court of Ko- Ko in Titipu to find out if Yum-Yum is now free to marry him. Well, she is not free to marry him just yet and the story takes creizy twists from there, until the two are together at last, and everyone is happy. The show was filled with many tremendously colorful and exciting chorus scenes due to bright kimonos and colorful fans. There were also many solos, quartets, and touching ballads that were all sung with excellence. The show really captured the magic of Japan. As the couples made their way from such restaurants as Alfonso ' s and the Colonial Inn, they would make their way through the beautifully decorat- ed arch and over the bridge in to the wonderfully transformed gym. Decorated in yellow and green streamers, the gym-turned-garden included swings and even a gazebo complete with a fountain. The band Perfection performed for the class of 1983 and the highlight of the evening was the crowning of the King, Joel Shamon, and the Queen, Barbara Birch. When the last song was over, the couples once again walked over the bridge and through the arch. Despite the fact that the next time they would see the gym it would be back to being like any other gym, each would have memories of May 29, 1982 to reflect back on. It is a week that is set aside for BHS students to act and dress a little differently than normal. Each day of the week had a different theme: Hat, Sock, and Tie Day, Tropical Day. 60 ' s Day, Do Your Own Thing Day, and Blue White Day. There was also the traditional hall decorating contest, which the Juniors won this year, that provided some heated competition between the different classes. The week was wrapped up on Friday with a pep rally that included speeches by coaches, captains, and performances by the cheerleaders and majorettes. upper right: Junior hali — 1st place center left: Nadine Di- Clcmente center right: Sophomore hall — 3rd place above: Senior hall — 2nd place 156 HOMECOMING 1982 upper left: Queen Dianne Serra and Lisa Manning, up- per right Lisa, Diane, and Kerri Dougherty. mm left: Mr. Buckley crowns the Homecoming Queenbottom: The Homecoming nominees Despite the football team ' s loss to Lincoln-Sudbury, October 2, 1982 was a special day for five Se- nior girls. One big change was re- placing the job of editor-in-chief with an editorial board of five. Instead of one person assuming all the responsibilities, they were equally split up as each editor took charge of a different section. Another change was filling up empty space with candids, candids and more candids! The actual organization for the 1983 Missile began in May of 1982. After a disappointing 1982 edition due to the lack of help and participation, the call for volunteers from the new advisor. Mrs. Hovsepian, brought in many re- sponses. In September the real work began. With the first deadline in No- vember, the staff had a great deal of work ahead of them. If it weren ' t for the help of all the staff, the deadlines would have never been met. After getting into the swing of things, the staff discovered that putting out a yearbook wasn ' t all that hard, it just took up time. Finally, the last deadline came and went and the staff could breathe a sigh of relief. They feel that the 1983 Missile would be the start of a new look for BHS yearbooks. What ' s in store for the future yearbooks? Color pictures and individual pictures for underclassmen. The 1983 Missile Staff thanks all of the people that helped him make this yearbook classy.
