STUDENT FERNANDO BASTOS The American Field Service is an organization that of- fers the opportunity to join another culture for a com- plete year. It also offers one a chance to observe a different educational, political, and social system. One of the best parts of my experience has been learn- ing how to live with and to love a new family. I would like to thank the entire faculty of Bedford High School. I would also like to thank all my friends and the people that have mode this year possible and so very enjoyable to me. 64 VALEDICTORIAN MICHAEL SIZOO For many years, I hove dreamed of being my class valedic- torian. It is needless to say that I am now extremely honored to receive this award, but in pursuit of it I have not been blinded by my ambition; perhaps instead, I have acquired some new insights into life itself. Just how important is the leaf growing at the tip of an oak tree branch? The other leaves on that branch are just as vital for the tree ' s nourishment. Equally as vital are the leaves on the other branches above or below. Even if the various leaves might reach out in different directions, are not those that seek the morning sun just as important as those that seek the afternoon sun? In whichever directions we may grow in the coming years, we must remember that true success cannot be measured by the accumulation of wealth or fame; it cannot even be fairly judged by the views and principles of other people. True success can be measured only by one ' s own heart and by one ' s personal satisfaction. In order to achieve such suc- cess, we must first find a meaning and a purpose for our lives. The number of different branches on that oak tree is almost infinite; the shape of the growing tree is constantly changing, and often totally new branches are formed as the tree reaches for new heights. However, once each of us has found his or her individual direction, it is not enough just to dream. With a strong de- termination we should strive toward our goals whether they ore realistic or idealistic. The importance does not lie so much in obtaining the objective; instead, it lies in putting forth the best effort. In doing so, we will develop ourselves to our fullest extent and we will meet with true success. If each leaf on every branch grows in this manner, the tree will flourish. I would like to wish to all of you, especially to the class of 1979, the best of luck in the coming years, and I sincerely believe that all of us can find true success in our own way.
