BEDFORD LIBRARY BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS The BEDFORD FLAG The oldest flag in the United States The Bedford Flag, commissioned to Cornet John Page in 1737 by King George II of England, was carried by his son, Nathaniel, who fought with the Bedford Minutemen at the Battle of Concord Bridge, April 19, 1775. Acquired JUN J9Z8- No ■J. . . «■-4 I €1 BCDSOKD DEDICATION We, the class of 1978, dedicate our yearbook to Mrs. Miele in re- membrance of her help and guid- ance. The time that she has given us as class advisor has helped en- rich our four years of high school, and this devotion will always be deeply appreciated. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction 4 Seniors 10 Underclassmen 70 Activities 88 Sports 114 Faculty 150 Now, is the time and hour that we take the learnings of our short years and travel forth, in the search of what each of us must find. As the bird, we emerge from our guided and sheltered life and spread our wings as we look toward the sky and follow our chosen poth. We have come to the place in time wherefrom we leave our secure nest and take flight, trusting our own judgement. « The locks from our lockers, our gymsuits and our rings, The folders in the choir room, filled with songs we used to sing. The jackets with the letters, the ribbons that we won, A few notebooks from our classes, that now have come undone. Stories in the paper, ghosts of things we used to do. Can ' t be all that ' s left from the four best years we knew. The guitars in the music room, some tickets from the plays, The pictures of our best friends with the words they used to say. Our folders in the art room, some happy days we planned. Our tickets from the senior prom, the music from our school band. Smiles that still stay happy, friendships that stay new, guess there ' s many things still left, from the four best years we knew . . . Chris Page SENIOR Secretary — Lauree Winter 12 LORRAINE E. I realize that this is a distinguished honor that should not be taken lightly; unquestionably I am truly pleased to have been chosen for this distinction. But the grades that have given me my high academic standing did not come easily. Often I have had to put all of my time and effort to complete assigned tasks. I feel that my deter- mination is partly responsible for my success. However, in future years when this yearbook is discovered and dragged out after being long forgotten, do not remember me solely for my scholastic achievements. Think of my achieve- ments in music or my endeavors in drama. I want to be remem- bered as a person and a friend, not as just the valedictorian. 50 A.F.S. STUDENT Masumi Yamamuro Had it not been for B.H.S., my life here would not hove been so rich! There ore some little differences between my country Japan and here. The school life is one of them. I love lively American teenagers and enjoyed myself with them. I feel that there is much left that I can leam from the school life, but the time has flown too rapidly. I wish I could have failed and stayed another year! i am full of gratitude to all of you who have enriched my experi- ences at B.H.S. Thank you very much from my heart, and I hope to see you again. The squad finished 5-1 in dual meets and second overall in the D.C.L. all-league meet. Lead- ing the way all season was Jr. Joe Collins, who finished undefeated for the year and the premier runner in the D.C.L. Joining Collins on the first team all-league squad was Sr. co-Captain Thom Stowell, who capped an excellent career with a seventh place finish in the D.C.L. Co-Captain John Whitaker and Jon Coleman both were named to the second team all-league team, tributes to their stellar per- formances. Only three seniors graced this year ' s girls ' field hockey team, and the inexperi- ence showed as they suffered through a 3-8-2 season, although the majority of the games were lost by one goal in close competition. But this greeness gives hope for future years, what with young talent like Marie Lyons, Nancy Hennrikus, Kris- ten Blaisdell, Cindy White, and Lisa Bin- sack as only a few members of the return- ing team. Seniors Maureen Mead, Tish Neil, and Mary Lynn each had good years and provided strong examples for the young squad. OF THE D.C.L. Three straight close opening losses, followed by a school record of seven consecu- tive victories including four shut-outs, a memorable 21-20 win over undefeated Division 1 power Fitchburg, all climaxed by an undisputed D.C.L. title highlighted the Buccaneer Varsity Football effort this season. Senior co-Captains Ray Beyrand and Joe Sickles spearheaded the great season as Beyrand keyed a tough defense and Sickles made all- league, gaining 713 yards and intercepting three passes in the process. Junior back Mike Genetti also was an all-league star, gaining 701 yards, leading the team in pass receptions (14 for 356 yards), intercepting four passes and scoring ten touchdowns. Other all — D.C.L. selections were defensive end Art Molina, lineman Ted Weaver, lineman Jim Ruetenik, and quarterback Rich Hoy- land. Senior end Mark Shamon and senior tackle Chris Pelletier also enjoyed fine years for the champion Bucs. The Bucs revenged two consecutive Turkey Day losses to Concord-Carlisle with a score of 26-0, this past game, making the Turkey Day rivalry: Bedford 3, Concord-Carlisle 2. Coach Armand Sabourin was named area Coach-of-the Year. All this proves that we are the CHAMPIONS of the Dual County League. Mrs. Jean Hibbert 163 To the Class of 1978: The yearbook for the Bedford High School is a tribute to the student body and staff who put great time and effort into the process that we call education. Most of you should have a sense of satisfaction as you read the yearbook and review the many fine activities which are described here. It should mean that the memories of your high school days will be pleasant and long- remembered no matter what experiences you have later in life. I congratulate those who put the yearbook together. Ever since I was the Editor of the yearbook in the almost forgotten year of 1947, I have had a special place in my memory for this type of student achievement. I congratulate those who now graduate and wish them the best of experiences as they go to work or go to advanced education. I encourage those in the classes that remain in Bedford to aspire to the same achievement of the class of 1978. Sincerely, Kenton E.
