We are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book whose pages are infinite ■ I BEDFORD HIGH SCHOOL TABLE OF CONTENTS Dedication 4 Faculty 7 Seniors 21 Superlatives 50 Senior Activity Directory 61 Sports 69 Activities 95 The Arts 107 Underclassmen 137 DEDICATION We, the class of 1970, gratefully dedicate our yearbook to our class advisor, Miss Veronica Flangheddy. The Most manifest sign of wisdom is a continual cheerfulness: her state is like that of things in the regions above the moon, always clear and serene. —Montaigne, Essays To the Class of 1970: Many interesting problems will confront each of you in the next decade. The solutions to some of them will involve many extremely important decisions concerned with the preservation of man and an honorable way of life. Your demonstrated abilities during the recent past to be creative and innovative leave little doubt concerning your ability, alertness, and preparedness to meet with poise and conficence whatever the future may present. My faith in you and your potential capabilities is steadfast. Best wishes for happiness and success are extended to all members of the Class of 1970. John Glenn Superintendent of Schools To the Class of 1970: The years move on quickly and change is around us everywhere. We become part of that change through our involvement in the progress of events. You are part of that change. Continue to become involved in your school or work and in your com- munity. Progress will be made by those of you who continue to self-evaluate and to evaluate your sur- roundings. Best of luck in your future endeavors. Bernard Gollis Principal To the Class of 1970: You have achieved in a world characterized by achievements, and accomplished in an era of spec- tacular accomplishments. However, the challenge of your generation may well be to be wise among the intelligent and to demonstrate a sense of direction in a world desperate for both. Best of luck to each of you. C. J. The over- all record was two wins and seven losses. There were only six lettermen on the team this year. The inexperience of the team was one of the main rea- sons for the poor showing this season. The team displayed new offensive strength but often at the expense of a poor defense. The overall attitude of the team was one of determination and unity. The players did a remark- able job considering their lack of ex- perience and were coached well by Coach Sabourin. The season started off in Bedford ' s favor with an 18-6 win over Ashland. Quarterback Jim LeMay threw a 45- yard pass to End Joe LaDow who made a touchdown with only 45 sec- onds remaining. Defensive Back Bill O ' Neil intercepted an Ashland pass in the end zone during the last quar- ter preserving the opening win. After four straight losses Bedford captured their second win when they defeated Lincoln-Sudbury 15-12. Jim LeMay set up the winning touchdown passing to Don Grassi with only 2 V2 minutes remaining. The team also played a good game against Westwood but lost 40-26. Joe LaDow, the big receiver, caught many important passes. Don Grassi and Jay Porter did some good running and the two guards, Doug Roome and Dave Barrett helped a great deal dur- ing offensive plays. Ken Mead inter- cepted two passes during the Lincoln- Sudbury game. In spite of the numer- ous injuries throughout the season, the Buccaneer ' s enthusiasm was always en- couraging. There were many close games and three victories in overtime. Bed- f ord outscored its opponents by an average score of 62-61. The team de- feated three teams that did make it to the Tech Tourney and also beat Westwood for the first time in the school ' s history. Howie Emerson led the team in scoring with an average of about 1 1 points a game. He also led in assists. The leading rebounder was Joe LaDow, and Martin Mooney led the team in foul shooting. Other leading scorers for Coach Scibelli ' s Buccaneers were Joe LaDow, Joe Dooley, and Jim Lemay. 78 ■ SCORES Opponent Bedford Weston 80 82 Acton-Boxboro 67 57 Lincoln-Sudbury 40 34 Westwood 76 69 Lynnfield 52 61 Ashland 64 80 Wayland 53 50 Weston 70 74 Acton-Boxboro 69 34 Lincoln-Sudbury 50 51 Westwood 72 74 (Overtime) Lynnfield 56 58 (Overtime) Ashland 72 84 Wayland 61 63 (Overtime) 79 The Junior Varsity Basketball team had an outstanding season under Coach Adams, finishing with a 16-3 record, losing twice to Westwood and once to Wayland. The JV ' s averaged 49 points to their opponents ' 36. The leading scorer was Danny McDonnel with 13.6 points a game. Other leading scorers were Paul Barnard, Keith Cooper and Kevin Kempton. 81 INDOOR TRACK Starting off the season with a strong win against Lynnfield the Indoor Track Team lost momentum to finish the sea- son with 1-6 record. The highlights of the season were the performances of the tri-captains, Bruce Seal, Bill O ' Neil and Mike Hoots who accounted for much of the scoring. Promising performances were turned in by underclassmen Jim Giencke, Tom Jacobson, and Karl Gerdes. The team ' s coach is Mr. Powers. Bill O ' Neil SPRING TRACK CROSS COUNTRY Bruce Seal ICE HOCKEY 84 The ice hockey team under Coaches Saintto and Petrillo finished third in the Dual County League with a record of five wins, six losses and three ties, including six shutouts. One of the highpoints of the season was a 0-0 tie with Lynnfield (who finished in sec- ond place), but there was also a disap- pointing loss to Weston 2-1 after hav- ing beaten them 6-0. Bedford scored 24 goals and had 25 goals scored against them. Mike Lane won the Charles Davin Memorial Award and was voted to the league All-Star team. Goalie Tony Baudanza, and Jeff Bax- ter received honorable mentions in the balloting for the All-Star Team. Skiers Against The Elements Hard luck befell the Bedford High School Ski Team when January and February failed to produce any snow on which to practice. Being a first year varsity sport, the team worked with many handicaps. In spite of these drawbacks, the skiers practiced every day at Little ' s Golf Course, which they used for both Cross-country and Sla- lom practice. After spending two weeks trans- forming their old skis into new cross- country skis, which the team did not have funds to buy, the racers entered their first meet of the season. The meet was on January 7, at Wayland, in com- petition with eight other well-estab- lished ski teams. Kimberly Peters fin- ished on top for the B.H.S. team plac- ing twentieth, while the other mem- bers did not fare so well. The team ' s efforts to improve were rewarded in the January 14 slalom race held at Catrock, in Weston. Com- peting with 5 other teams, Nancy Coombs placed first and Jennifer Baker second for the Girls ' team while Andy Twombly took sixth for the Boys ' team. These results secured a second place for the ski team. After this race, conditions worsened as warm weather melted the snow and all hopes for further races. Just in case conditions improved, the ski team continued to practice, playing soccer to stay in shape. Prayers were answered when cold weather made it possible to ski on artificial snow at Prospect Hill at Waltham. The long time away from the slopes handicapped the skiers who placed only third out of the schools. All things considered, the ski team has done very well for its first season and will continue to improve with enthusiasm from participants and the student body. RIFLE TEAM The 1970 BHS Rifle Team did well this year under Coach William Keup. The team is built around the six top shooters, Captain Ted Tremblay, Co- Captain Phil Fogg (both seniors), Dave and Bob Crook, Gary Fogg, and Bob Dishman. Other team members include Juniors Ed Keyes and Mark Letizi; Sophomores Joe Lima, Bob Beyrand, Bob Stitt and Wayne Thomas ; and Freshman David Blacksmith. Coach Keup says there is a lot of potential in the team, but due to the few number of practices, they don ' t shoot quite as well as they should. He goes on to say that the reason for this is that most schools have their own range, but that Bedford has to use the Hanscom Field Range which pre- sents a problem in transportation and the boys can ' t shoot when they like. Bedford ' s team fires against teams from Waltham, Marlboro, Wayland, Concord, Melrose, Maiden, Watertown, Acton, and Newton. The top shooters on the team also shoot against M.I.T. and Northeastern University. Unlike most sports, riflery requires less physical strength than skill. One careless move and a person could be fatally shot. The highest team score was a record 908 to 841 against Acton, compared to last year ' s record of 870. In honor of this worthy occasion the team will donate a plaque to their coach, Mr. Keup. Senior Phil Fogg was awarded the annual Boubo Award for the highest team average. 87 90 GIRLS ' BASKETBALL It was an experimental season for girls ' basketball this year. Instead of using six players on a team, there were only five. The rules were very similar to those in boys ' basketball. At first, the prospects looked good for the varsity girls with their impressive victory over Westford 27-21. These bright prospects faded how- ever, with the loss of every successive game after that. They pulled out of the slump in the second to the last game, trouncing Lynnfield 41-25, only to lose their last game to Wilmington in the last eight seconds. Outstanding scorers for the Bucs were Kathy Curtis and Joanne Smith. Other members of the team were Gretchen Schafer, Joyce Donovan, Judy Beecy, Lisa McManus, Barbie Kace, Linda Stubbs, Diane McGrath, Kathy Savinac, Pat McMahan, Cheryl Pfeiffer, Judy Church, Chris Kennedy, Pauline Mc- Kenna, Bert McKenna, and Linda Corn- ley. Mrs. March coached the team. Part of this success could be attributed to the fact that many of the girls attended a hockey camp over the summer. On many occa- sions the team was thankful that goalie, Cheryl Pfeiffer, had attended this camp and learned the tricks of her trade. Other members of the team were Pauline McKenna, Alice Potter, Karen Robinson, Gretchen Schafer, Janet Smith, Mickee Boireau, Rosemary Genetti, Jackie McCallum, Linda Barker, Joanne Smith, Jean Tatosian, Joanne Curran, Chris Kennedy, and Lisa McManus. The team was coached by Miss Gfroerer.
