To be Worthy of Ourselves Bcd-fht Colfec-h Susan Webber Editor-in-Chief BEDFORD HIGH SCHOOL BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS mmrm. . . MR. LAWRENCE HEALEY MR. DONALD BARRON In little ways and in big ways, with warmth and with wisdom, you, as our class advisor, have guided and directed our many endeavors for the past four years. Each one of us, dear teacher and advisor, has felt your sincerity and your strength as a friend and leader. So with deep-felt admiration, respect, and love, we, the class of 1963, dedicate this, our yearbook, to you, Mr. Lawrence Healey. You have always been the unsung helping hand behind our posters, programs, displays, and prom decorations. In our group efforts, as well as in our individual efforts, either directly, through your teaching, or indirectly, by your aid in school functions, you have been patient and generous with your time and talents. You have selflessly devoted your time to this, the 1963 Missile, as well as to the past yearbooks. Therefore, with gratitude and deep apprecia- tion, we, the class of 1963, dedicate our year- book to you, Mr. Donald Barron. 2 Mrn ' mtrntion MR. JOHN GLENN Superintendent of Schools You have been a part of this compre- hensive high school for a minimum of one year and a maximum of four years. In this school you have found abundant opportunities through which you were able to learn, to grow, and to achieve so that your chances of success in meet- ing the challenges of competition in higher education, in industry, and in life have been insured to the degree which you desire to establish for yourself. This school provides a broad aca- demic outline or curriculum guide for the teachers and at the same time gives these teachers freedom to build a cur- riculum for all students that is rich, flex- ible, and challenging. Your personal characteristics which you have developed while a student at Bedford High will provide you with a bulwark of strength to help you to face up to every challenge with which you may be confronted. It is my sincere wish for all graduat- ing students that you attain the heights to which you may aspire. 8 MR. EDWARD GILLESPIE Principal Your future years will be successful to the de- gree that you use your personal power to bless or blight the world. You will use it everyday, often without thinking of the reaction it may bring. Having known your class for at least four years, I feel confident that you will be able to represent mankind in the future on the highest moral level. As each month has its individual and dis- tinguishing characteristics which contribute to the success of the year, so you, the Class of 1963, have made your own individual contributions to the success of your four years at Bedford High School. To the Class of 1963: intellectual acumen, excellent school spirit, and cooperation with the faculty to enhance the stature and effectiveness of Bedford High School have combined to form a unique hallmark for the Class of 1 963. These qualities, which you have ex- emplified and practiced, have been gratifying to the faculty and a source of genuine pride to your parents and yourselves. May all your future works be known by your distinctive hallmark, and may this hallmark become a universal standard. In this way your fine ideals, together with a fierce will to succeed, should insure success MR. JAMES KINNEEN for each of you. Vice Principal 9 GUIDANCE Students are inclined to visualize ma- turity as a definite state to be attained at the earliest possible date, much as if it were the end of a journey. It would be infinitely more realistic to think of it as an ever receding goal toward which we begin to march at birth and go on to the end of life. Those of us who feel we have no further need to learn and grow are most sadly lacking in those attributes commonly consider- ed the essential qualities of a maturing individual. MR. SUSAN BAUSH RALPH HAMMOND SUSAN WEBBER ' i k OUTSTANDING In 1956 our class entered Junior High in the bright, new building, and started the adjustment from the oldest of grammar school, to the babies of high school. Teachers that year included Mr. Punch— and so it goes— Miss Gifford, Miss Stead, and Mr. Lavery. With Mr. Lavery we learned almost every player on the Canadian Hockey Teams. Our years at dancing school with Mr. Greenwood finally started to pay off; we had real dances, from 5:00 to 7:30 P.M. The couples that year were Paul Eikelboom and Betsy Cavanaugh, Henry Gardini and Joan Fijal, Brenda Dill and Kenny Hanson, Dave Casey and Barbara Michaels, Mike Linehan and Karen Sousa, Mike Linehan and Diane Zweil, Mike Linehan and Gail Howard, and Mike Linehan and Joan Fijal. Mike was a playboy even at the age of twelve. Eighth grade saw our rainy class trip to Sturbridge Village, on segregated buses, and the wagon ride we almost took. There was also Mr. King, the definition of environment, and the Science Countdown. Mr. Stevens held on to those Betsy Trotwood tests long enough! Were they that good, or that bad? Those English classes were always exciting, especially when Mr. Rogers was there: go up at the commas, Life is but a drreamm ... Our Freshman year started with a bang almost literally. Remember that long, cold wait on the football field, while police looked for the bomb, that wasn ' t there; and the subsequent Saturday morning classes? The rest of that year was exciting too, even Algebra classes: Mr. Sullivan (Hey, Kids! he smiled today!!), Mr. Schwab and his lollipop Navy, and, of course, Mr. Melanson: pickled toes, water girls complete with bare feet and daisies, and frogs ' legs, were our offerings to him. In return, he gave us the question which took four years to answer— What is a violin maker? The bulk of our Algebra and singing training came from Civilization class: x = minus b, plus or minus the square root of, b minus four ac; all over two a! So much for our work as Freshmen. As for recreation, some of us went to New York, where, among other things, we taught Mr. Gollis to say, boots without shoes. No one can deny that our behaviour was exceptional, but did they have to stone our train? We shall never forget our Freshman Flop, though we ' ve been trying desperately. The crowded dance floor! The magnificent refreshments a la Billy Crocker Fields! And the huge profit of $11.21. By the end of that year we had crystallized our class character and exemplified it in a mass complaint to AAr. Kinneen that we were much too overworked in Biology. Tenth grade was a little calmer, though we did acquire Terry Reed and had our first experiences with Chemistry Lab. Joan, Leslie, and Carol found some unexpected twists to Christmas Dance dec- orating. Only Eddie could have forseen the shower that followed their visit to the boys ' locker room! At the end of our Sophomore year came the Northeastern Music Festival at Bedford. What shall we remember longest: trying to solicit in the worst blizzard of the year, the wonderful bands and choruses we scurried around town to hear, or the paper we picked up afterwards? Finally, our Junior year came, and we were upperclassmen. The headiness of that word was soon tempered by College Boards and the phrase after high school, but we still managed to have a good year. The teachers ' problems seemed to multiply, though: Mr. Gollis ducked balloons — ex ' cuse me, cloud models; Mr. Healy and class rings; Mrs. Kahn ' s headache was the five-minute differential; to ignore or not to ignore— that is the question. Mr. Tinqly left his famous last words: Believe me, I ' m telling you right now, see you and you at two. We had the school ' s first undefeated team that year— Field Hockey, and were we proud! Wasn ' t it worth a broken thumb, Leslie? Another first was our operetta Sweethearts. Our dramatic effort of the year was Teahouse of the August Moon. To these two successful productions we gave our lovely Lotus Blossom and the Sweetheart of the year, Sylvia. The hard work we put into our Junior Prom was well rewarded. Blue Laws or no; the gymnasium was mystically transformed into a Symphony in White, with Joan Goulart as our lovely Princess, and Denise Whitley, Pam Taylor, Carol Wig- gins, and Jane Davis in her court. Mrs. Kahn, Mr. Gollis, and Mr. Healy must remember our class trip to historic Boston! We toured the Capitol Building, including the Snack Bar; the rich, lux- urious Gardner Museum, whose pool we made even richer; and the Bunker Hill monument. The trip to the top was slow, but coming down was even slower for some of us! A few sheep tried to lose themselves that day, but we regained our full numbers in time for Class Day, when we said goodbye to many friends and realized that we were next. As we started our senior year, the many new students from the Air Base couldn ' t fill the gap that the graduates left. Everything we did seemed to be the last: the last football games, Christmas Vespers, mid-years. Spring Concert, and Basketball games: but we managed to keep our spirits up with our senior priv- ileges, as trivial as they may have been. The annual Halloween decorations of the school were a triumph. We should like to thank the following organizations for aiding this worthy endeavor: the V.A., for donating the United Fund Torch and the bench: the 1-Stop Cleaners, for the Plaid Stamp; all the farms that supplied pumpkins; and, of course, Raytheon, for the blinking red light. Fall also saw another undefeated field hockey season; and Miss Harris ' leaving, with good-byes and lollipops. Our football team won its fourth straight Thanks- giving Day game. Our star track man. Ken Hanson, continued to break track records on all the courses he ran. Our dramatic endeavors produced several senior stars: Vickey Hooper in The Night of January 16th; Jane Davis in Sorry, Wrong Number; and Dawn Damon and Sue Baush in Calamity Jane. The POD trip to Boston and eating at Durgan Park was very educational; Mrs. Davis learned that her classes were larger than she had thought. Diane Zweil, Richard Dutcher, and Brenda Dill became National Merit Scholar- ship finalists, after many false alarms. In May, Bedford High finally led the Northeastern District Festival parade, with majorette co-captains Claudia Hammond and Diane Zweil in the lead. The long awaited month of June finally arrived, with the parties, ceremonies, and celebrations of graduation; and we, the Class of 1963, made ready to leave our hallowed Halls of Learning. ALMA MATER Farewell dear Bedford, we shall honor you; We praise and cherish all you ' ve taught and your ideals so true. Friendships and knowledge, joys that we have gained, All the sentiments of youth our high school has sustained. We honor you, we cherish you. Our Alma Mater, long so true. | | Hail Alma Mater, our days here are but few As we leave these hallowed halls We pause to honor you. Past turns to present, we cherish all the years; A great new future holds a hope that has no need for tears. Learning and playing end here at last. Pleasant memories we have gained will form a happy past. We honor you, we cherish you Our Alma Mater long so true. Hail Alma Mater, you gave us what you must. Truth and honor, love and courage, hold a promised trust. 120 As we leave these hallowed halls, we pause to honor you 124 The MITRE Corporation Is a nonprofit systenn engineering organ- ization providing technical advice to the Air Force Electronic Sys- tems Division.
