Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1962 volume:

PROPERTY OF BEDFORD PUBLIC SCHOOL MUSIC DEPARTMENT 2 MRS. GRIFFIN Wherefore thou be wise ... She reels not in the storm of warring words. She brightens at the clash of ' Fes ' and ' No. ' She sees the best that glimmers through the worst. You have helped us whenever we needed you. You have displayed enthusiasm for our every endeavor. You have kept us in order when to do so seemed impossible. You have always supported us when support was badly needed. You have helped us with our projects, in- cluding the dance, quite a problem when everyone wanted to be in charge. You have believed in us when every- one else had given up hope. You have always been serenity amidst confusion. Thus, in appreciation of your interest and aid in all we have done during the past four years, we dedicate this, our yearbook, to you, Mrs. Griffin, our class advisor. DEDICATED TO MR. McCAULEY 4 MR. McCAULEY GENERAL EDITORS: Ken Troup, Virginia Walker, Sara Smith Thresh . . . for your master; the grain you are threshing is also for yourselves. For you, our patient taskmaster, we make this dedication. For years you have been the guiding factor behind not only the success of each yearbook, but also our own individual successes. Your only rewar d has been the knowledge that you have in- spired others to succeed. This may be a just re- ward, but we feel that you deserve greater recog- nition. Now, we want to give you this long neglected acknowledgement. We want to let every- one know how appreciative we are of your help. We speak not only for ourselves but for every other student in the past or in the future who has or who will have the benefit of your counsel. For this reward, we dedicate the staff pages of our yearbook to you, Mr. McCauley. The first goal in any activity of learning, be- yond the pleasure one derives from discovery and success, is that this learning should serve him in the future. Learning takes us somewhere, but it also allows us to go further more easily. It is a base which can be used in r ecognizing subsequent problems as special cases or variations of the ideas mastered in previous learnings. Thus, education may be considered to be a continual broadening and deepening or enriching of the basic knowl- edges in terms of ideas. Probably the greatest education the world needs today is a better understanding of the basic ideas of living in a world society and the applica- tion of this understanding to the constructive uses and proper control of the great discoveries in the field of science — discoveries which have very seriously shaken the stability of world situations. It is ironical that man with the highest levels of world education ever acquired, finds himself in a most precarious situation as a result of this educa- tion which has occurred apparently without the accompanying world growth in necessary social and cultural progress. Immediate attention to this phase of education, the broadening and deepening of basic ideas for social harmony, is necessary on the part of the learners the world over lest civili- zation be set back hundreds of years. You, the students of Bedford High School. Class of ' 62, will play an important part in govern- ment at local and broader levels however great or small your individual contributions may be. The acquisition of basic knowledges and ideas you have achieved will give you the potential for unlimited participation in the problems of the immediate fu- ture. MR. JOHN GLENN Superintendent of Schools The crest and crowning of all good, life ' s final star is Brotherhood. Make way for Brotherhood! Make way for man! The liberally educated man is one who can make wise decisions independently. He can choose between good and bad, truth and falsehood, the beautiful and the ugly, the worthwhile and the trivial. His educa- tion will improve his ability to make ethical decisions, political decisions, decisions within the home and on the job. It will enable him to make the many decisions necessary in planning a good life and conducting it properly. This is the man the Class of 1962 gives to the world — the man who will live according to the precepts of this crest and crowning of all good. I God gave us two ends, one to sit with and one to think with. Success depends on which one we use the most. Heads we win, tails we lose. —ROBERT MORGAN Mr. Morgan Mrs. Sullivan Mrs. Littleton Mr. Van Buren Mrs. Zalesnik 12 Mrs. Marchant; Mr. McCauley; Miss Burke; Miss Wright; Mrs. Kahn; Mrs. Griffin Mrs. Herrling; Mr. Dietz; Miss Sulides; Miss Burke; Miss Blakeny LANGUAGES 13 Mr. Rouvalis; Mr. Rancatore; Mr. King JUNIOR HIGH SCIENCE Mr. Tingley; Mrs. Sharnoff; Mr. Gollis; Miss O ' Neill SENIOR HIGH SCIENCE 14 Mr. Rouvalis, Miss Stead, Mr. Bartis JUNIOR HIGH MATHEMATICS 15 Mr. Fuller, Mrs. Davis, Mr. Healey, Mr. Stott 16 Mrs. Corbett, Mr. Ferry BUSINESS Mr. Phinney, Mr. Toland Mrs. Hinrichs, Mr. Barron ART Miss McLaughlin, Mrs. Munson HOME ECONOMICS Mr. James, Mr. Carriero, Mr. Tardanico INDUSTRIAL ARTS Mr. McManus, Miss Gfroerer PHYSICAL EDUCATION Miss Plourde SCHOOL NURSE 19 Mr. Whelan, Mrs. Dyment, Mr. Webber, Mr. Nolan, Mr. Genetti CUSTODIANS 20 LEON HAIR STYLIST Great Road Shopping Center MIX GREENHOUSES 373 Concord Rd. A new group, this year ' s Dramatics Club, was a full time activity for the first time. Under the faculty advisor, a wide variety of dramatics exer- cises were studied, ranging from simple limbering up exercises to more complicated pantomimes, from short scenes from full-length plays to one-act plays to the spring three-act play. Other phases of the theatre were also studied. Among these are stagelighting, scenery design and construction, make-up technique, and stage direction. Field trips to the productions of other groups, amateur and professional, provided spirited discussion on many of the points previously mentioned. 8TH GRADE DRAMATICS Mr. Stott The Grade Eight drama group, The Foot- lighters, meet weekly to enjoy the fun that goes with dramatics. They do simple skits and elaborate pantomimes as well as plays of vary- ing lengths. Scenery, blocking, make-up, and emotion are words that have a special mean- ing for The Footlighters. TAHAS Mr. Gollis TAHAS, the chemistry club, is primarily a project club. Each member either has his own project or is in- volved in a fjroup project. All research and experiments are done with a special goal in sijrht. In doing his project each member expands his knowledge of chemistry and the other sciences, with the advisor always ready to smooth the rough spots. The club members enjoy speakers, films, and field trips. At the end of the year the members elect the TAHAS Man of the Year, whose name is placed on a plaque in the chemistry laboratory. BIOLOGY CLUB Miss O ' Neill This organization is composed of students who are interested in supplementing their course material or personal knowledge in the field of biology. This activity provides additional time for individual expression in the specialized branches of this science, with emphasis on recent biological developments and research projects. MATH LEAGUE Miss Flangheddy The Math League, a new activity this year, meets weekly under the direction of Miss Flangheddy and Mr. Melanson. All interested and ambitious math- ematics students from grades ten through twelve are welcome. From this group, the ten team members, plus alternates, are chosen on the basis of the results of a qualifying exam which tests in many different phases of math. Each month this ten- member team competes in a league meet with teams from neighboring communities. Once a year, Bed- ford hosts a meet at our high school. At these monthly meets, while ascertaining points for the Bedford High teams, the individuals aim for a better understanding of mathematics and for schol- arships awarded to high scores by local corporations. The Math League, therefore, is an opportunity to win acclaim for Bedford High School as well as for one ' s self. THE POWDERHORN Mrs. Kahn The Powderhorn is the official organ of the Bedford High School in which the opinions and activities of the student body and the school administration are revealed. The purpose of the newspaper is to relate accurate accounts of school news; to create interest and participation in school activities; to stimulate thought and imagination in the minds of its readers; and to establish a mutual understanding between the faculty and the student body. 42 Policy Board — Powderhorn THE CITIZENSHIP COMMITTEE The Citizenship Committee is a student elected body which attempts to introduce the students to the democratic point of view. The purpose of the committee is to further the understanding of the institution of democracy in government; to instill in the students the principles of a democratic way of life; to develop social sensitivity to needs and social consciousness of problems; to build mutual respect for the opinions of others, regardless of race or creed, social or economic status; to stimulate and encourage active participation and interest in civic affairs and activities. At a time when all the world looks to the United States for values, standards, leadership, the need for civic competence and civic responsibility is all too apparent. To help meet this need, the Citizenship Committee directs and administers the choosing of a Citizen of the Month for each month and then a Citizen of the Year. The Library club is dedicated to three goals; to sponsor a greater interest among the students in the use of books and library services, to stimulate reading interest, and to improve the library service to the school. Therefore, the club ' s activities are geared to make these goals possible. Members are schooled in library procedures and book review- ing which help them considerably in the English classroom. They also form and maintain the school scrapbook, which consists of articles and pictures which pertain to school activities and newspapers. The highlights of the club, of course, are the visits to the large libraries of Boston, M.I.T., and Harvard University. ART CLUB Mr. Barron This year, the art has become the studio for a group of aspiring young artists who have offered their latent talents as a service to the school. They are on hand to satisfy the art needs of the school and community. The posters and displays that you see here, there, and where are the results of their co-operative effort to help those in need of advertising and decorative art work. JUNIOR RED CROSS Miss McLaughlin We think our club is different because all of us help people in different ways. During the year we shall cook, sew, and make decorations for the Metropolitan State Hospital ' s childrens unit at Waltham, Mass. We chose this for our project this year. On Blood day, for the Red Cross, we serve food for volunteer workers. This club welcomes any girl who wishes to join. Our main purpose is to give where it is needed. 46 CHEFS ' CLUB Miss McLaughlin In this club we make all kinds of foods such as cookies, cakes, and so forth. At the end of the year we take the money collected from dues and then buy a steak dinner or chicken with all the trimmings. This year we have sixteen members and the dues are a dollar each. This club gives all of the boys in the seventh and eighth grades a chance to learn how to cook and become chefs. STUDENT COUNCIL Lois Blakeney The Student Council may well be called The Service Club, because its primary function is to serve the school, its faculty and student body. The activities of the Council include two food sales a year, a Clothing Drive, (conducted in November) the sale of football programs at each game, and a dance. The proceeds from these activities go toward a Scholarship for some worthy Senior at the end of school. HUMAN RELATIONS The Human Relations Council is made up of a group of students who, voluntarily, through special activiries, spirit, and attitude, strive to promote better inter- cultural relations at home and abroad. This- group hopes to promote the spirit of. good will and an understanding of the contributions to our society by individuals and groups of all races, creeds, ethnic origins, socio-economic backgrounds; done specifically by gaining knowledge and understanding of others through lectures, seminars, exchange programs, and sponsored activities. 47 FRENCH CLUB Mr. Dietz It is not necessary to be a student of French to be a member of the French Club. A definite interest in the club must be shown by members. No one may miss three consecutive meetings or dues payments without a good reason. Only students new to the school can be admitted to the club during the year. Every year, the members of the club participate in the Language clubs ' assembly, and visit a French restaurant. The Latin Club is designed to indoctrinate the Latin students with the Roman way of life. In order to belong to the club, one must (1.) be a Latin student, (2.) obtain the signatures of twelve teachers signifying that he has performed good deeds for the teachers, (3.) be auctioned off at a slave auction and serve his masters faithfully, (4.) undergo a solemn ritual of initiation. After these requirements have been filled, the pledge is a full-fledged member of the club. Adulescentes Romani, the Bedford chapter of the National Latin Club, belongs to the Junior Classical League. This permits the club to send people to nation and state-wide annual conventions. SPANISH CLUB Miss Burke The goal of the Spanish Club is to promote a better understanding of the peoples and cultures of Latin America. The club activities consist of movies of Latin America, field trips, Spanish-speaking visitors, correspondence with Latin Ameri- can friends, the Language Club ' s assembly, and seasonal fiestas. MAINTENANCE CLUB Mr. James Mr. Carreiro The Maintenance Club consists of a group of boys who offer a unique service to the school. Throughout the year, at least every member of the faculty has some project which needs care. The members draw upon a list of these needs for their activities. Any boy that wishes to be of genuine service to the school will find that belonging to this club proves to be a gratifying experience. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB Mr. Fuller, Mr. Ferry It is the purpose of the photography club to provide its members with the opportunity to demon- strate their skill as well as to exchange ideas with other members. The program varies directly with the experience and interests of the members, but generally includes a discussion of portrait photography, lighting, dark room procedures, photography as a career. Some attention is given to the selection, care, and usage of cameras and equipment. An attempt is made to encourage the pursuit of photography, not only as a hobby, but also as a useful activity in promoting service to school and community through photography as a medium of mass communication. 49 Gimme a little Kiss! will va, huh? Quarterback Dave Jollin and Dick Albani, who scored the only touchdown for Bedford, were the offensive stars. On defense, Bill Burke, Rich Chick, and Bernie Graham starred. Bedford (18) North Reading (14) Bedford ' s first win of the season was sweet retaliation for three years ' defeat at the hands of N. Reading in the years past. Mike Linehan and Ed Franks gained the most yardage. Dave Jollin scored two touchdowns in the third quarter. Dick Albani scored the deciding TD in the fourth quarter. Game captains Burke and Chick starred on the defense. 74 CANDIDS After a two day postponement, the annual Thanksgiving Day game was played. Bedford came on the field looking for a win and that is exactly what they got. In the second period, Nick Cardoos went over the line from 15 yards out for the first Bedford touchdown. The third period passed with no scoring. However, in the fourth period, Burlington scored a touchdown and the conversion to make the score 8-6 Burlington. After receiving the kickoff, Bedford was forced to punt and it looked as if all hope was lost. In turn Bedford pushed the Red Devils back 45 yards from the line of scrimmage. With a fourth down and 55 to go Burlington punted. Steve Cutter fumbled but recovered the ball on the Burlington 32 yard line. With four minutes left and with what seemed the perfect play, Dave JoUin passed to Dick Albani, who ran into the end zone for the winning touch- down and a fitting end to his football career at Bedford Hi ' ih School. 76 Jackie Fay The Varsity, the only undefeated team in the history of Bedford High School 82 BEDFORD JEWELERS Great Road Shopping Center PALMERI ' S FLOWER GIFT SHOP 315 The Great Road 11 Debbie Thompson Kathy Looney Joanne Joslin PURITYFOOD STORE Bedford Shopping Center BEDFORD FARMS North Road 83 84 FRANK J.
