BEDFORD HIGH SCHOOL EPIC - 1987 VOLUME 61 FOR THE 481 NORTHFIELD BEDFORD, OHIO 44146 JUST RECORD Just as a needle follows tracks pressed in black vinyl, a student follows the paths inscribed by his teachers and fellow students. Often, in the middle of this path lies an obstacle. With a record, this obstacle may cause a skip. With a student, an obstacle can cause curiosity, confusion, or frustration. Since the needle of a record player requires only a little nudge to get back into the groove, maybe that's all a student needs to find success. It is the responsibility of the yearbook to record both the high and low points of the 1986-87 school year. On a record, the highs and lows produce sound. These highs and lows - the cheers and the groans - also produce the experience called life. The entire yearbook staff hopes that you have ex- ceeded your own expectations for the past school year and, by doing so, achieved a new personal record. Mana Mercurio Pam Kola. Goodbye” The '86-'87 school year saw some major changes. Even though the school levy had been passed in February of 1986, the crisis was felt in class dele- tion. teacher cutbacks, and larger class- es. Two new Vice-Principals arrived and we lost a secretary. Things settled down until a pre-Thanksgiving garbage can fire in the South House. The anti- alcohol green bean” campaign foretold of our green Christmas break. The Cleveland Browns missed the Superbowl by one game and gave the town a joy- ride. While the first snowfall blanketed the city, thoughts reached towards Bedford's sesquicentennial and summer vacation. Deborah Jones, formerly an East Cleveland High School administrator, joined the Bedford High School staff as Vice-Principal. She feels that Bedford High is unique and finds working with young people directly is refreshing. Steve Bowman came to us from Shaw High School. He is happy and excited about the challenge to assist students and support teachers. As a resident, he is proud to work in a great school system. Betty Romito, the South House secre- tary, retired after 18 years of service. Her continuous work and support was the foundation of the South House. She will be missed, but our hopes for happi- ness are with her. Moody Jr. High School, the 65 year old former High School that was named after Mr. A.E. Moody, an early Bedford Schools' Superintendent, had been the setting for joy and education for 58 years. After closing in 1980. it was left vacant until an offer to purchase it was made in early 1986. However, the plans for it to become a nursing home fell through. Finally, in August of 1986, the Board of Education made the decision to demolish the decaying building. The stately structure gone, a large open field is left like an open wound at the site. From the first float session to the final play of the football game, this shows the spirit of our student body. Homecoming festivities for 1986-87 started on Thursday night with the Homecoming Parade featuring the Bedford Bearcat Marching Band, the Homecoming Court, and the Homecoming Floats. The pa- rade ended at our home field with the presentation of the floats, with the Senior Class winning first prize. Their float's theme was “Show Our Class with a Bearcat in a green and white tuxedo stop- ping a Brush Arc. The Juniors' theme was Brush Eat Dust with two cars racing for the endzone with our Bearcat ahead. The Sopho- mores' theme was Bombard Brush featuring a Bearcat bombing Brush with a football. Finally, there was the Band float, their theme being Beat on Brush, with Animal beating on drums. The Varsity cheerleaders presented a skit featuring the Senior football players. The evening ended when the big question was answered, and Kelly Kovalik was named Homecoming Queen for 1986-87. Friday's football game began with cheers and ended with sorrows as the Bearcat football team fought a good fight but lost in the wan- ing seconds of the game; final score, 22-21. The cheerleaders. The noise. These four statements sum up the Spnt Assembly perfectly, but what was really involved m the Spirit Assembly? The assembly was a senes of cheers, entertainment, and just plain fun. involv- ing the whole school and letting every- one know that we have spirit. The cheerleaders kicked the whole show off sending excitement through the ar and getting everyone up on their feet. The winter sports participants fol- lowed as they wafced out on the floor to great applause Each class then had its chance to see who was the loudest by yefcng and screaming (seniors won). You might say all of this sounds like a regular pep rally, but the sprit assembly had some unique aspects! Five female faculty members dressed up as cheerleaders and performed m front of the whole student body. Also, for of our male staff members partici- pated by throwing baskets for the class they represented. The final event, and for many the highlight of the day. was Bedford's own FALLOUT playing Tonight . 12 SPECIAL EVENT Marty Johnson and tha cheerleaders psych the senior crowdl Clap your hands to the Bearcats ..II Kim HoNts. Mortimer (Doug Prior), who has been tied up and gagged by the villians. tries to convince Officer O’Hara (Matt Lesniewski) to release him, but O'Hara decides that Mortimer has to hear the plot” of the play he’s written and leaves Mortimer as he is. 14 SPECIAL EVENT After a year's absence, the Bedford Thearts Society returned to the stage yv,th its fall show, the classic murder comedy, ‘Arsenic and Old Lace . The show was directed by David S. Baumgartner, a Twinsburg attorney and community theater veteran. Also in charge of the production were Miss Haus and Miss Schwolow. the Thearts co-advisors, and Mrs. Kokal, the make- up committee advisor. ' Arsenic centers around two sweet and adorable old sisters. Abby and Mar- tha Brewster, (portrayed by Della Gott and Shence Butler), who have a quaint habit of poisoning lonely old gentlemen to put them out of their misery. But when their nephew. Mortimer, (played on alternate nights by Doug Prior and Terry Kurtz), discovers their latest victim tucked neatly away in the window seat, things go haywire. Not long after, Mortimer chases his fiancee. Elaine Harper (Ronda Gulajski), out of the house. His evil brother, Jonathon (Mar- vin Turpin), returns after many years' absence with his sidekick, Dr. Einstein, (alternately played by Ron Dick and Matt Lesmewski), with hopes of stash- ing his latest murder victim in the Brew- ster home. When Jonathan discovers that he and the aunts have the same number of victims to their credit, twelve, a contest to find a thirteenth victim begins. Mortimer almost becomes Jonathan's game winning victim, until his insane brother, Teddy (Tony Rut- ledge), who thinks he is Teddy Roose- velt, blows his bugle, bringing the local police (Natalie Prodan, Tony Harwood, and Ron Lisy) on the run. The conflict is resolved as Jonathan is carted off to jail. Dr. Einstein escapes. Mortimer and Elaine are reunited, and the aunts prepare to accompany Teddy to Happy Dale Sanitarium. But shortly before leav- ing, Abby and Martha give their last glass of poisoned elderberry wine to Happy Dale's superintendent, Mr. Witherspoon. Also included in the production were Sheila Rader, who por- trayed Dr. Harper, Elaine Harper's moth- er, and Gary Morth who played the part of a near-victim. Mr. Gibbs. Arsenic and Old Lace was greeted warmly, but by limited audiences during its December 11, 12, and 13 run. However, it allowed the Thearts members the opportunities to put to use their talents once again in the forms of set-building, costuming, and make-up committees, in addition to actually ap- pearing on stage. Mortimer Brewster (Doug Pnor) introduces Officer O'Hara (Matt Lesmewski) to hts aunts. Abby (Della Gott) and Mvtha (Shertce Butler) •'I'm sorry, but we can t take sane people at Happy Dale ” Teddy is safely committed, but as Mr Witherspoon (Terry Kurtz) explains to the elderly ladies (Shence Butler and Della Gott). they cannot go with Teddy to the sanitarium Mortimer Brewster (Doug Prior) and Elaine Harper (Ronda Guiaski). look on. Marty Johnson rushes for 3.6 yards par carry and receives 14.1 yards per catch m ’86. The 1986 football season opened with a surprise for the high school, fans , and the communities of Bedford High School. The Bedford Bearcats were 3-0 and ranked fourteenth in the county. The Cats had previously gouged West Geauga 22-14, romped Rhodes 21-6, and impounded the Bulldogs from Garfield 20-0. This set the stage up for a big showdown between un- defeated Bedford and our arch-rivals, the also undefeated Maple Mustangs (ranked seventeenth in the county). The televised event was a tight contest throughout, and at the end of regulation play, the score was deadlocked at 21-all, taking Bedford in its first overtime with the newly adopted overtime rules. High school overtime has each team taking possession from 20 yards to the end zone, trying to score. After each has attempted once, the leading scorer wins the contest. There was a coin flip to see who would attempt first. Bedford won the toss but elected to give Maple first crack. Maple obliged and went ahead 28-21, and Bedford’s last gasp attempt to tie was intercepted by a Maple defender, ending Bedford's hope of their first 4-0 beginning ever. Life for the Cats went on at 3 and 1, and life began to fall apart for the Cats also. Bedford skidded to a five-game losing streak. B.H.S. went to Willoughby to play the soon-to-be G.C.C. champions, and state runner-up in Division I, and were walloped in the mud, playing half the contest on Friday and half on Sat- urday due to the non-encouraging football weather. The final score was 29-14. Men- tor, also jumped on the bandwagon and rocked the Bedford “D” for 20 pts., winning by a ten point margin. It was Bedford's chance to redeem themselves in front of a spirited crowd, pumped up from the week's activit- ies. The balloon of spirit deflated soon afterwards. The Cats lost a heart breaker as the opposing Brush Arcs rallied to take the Cats 21-20. The Maple loss and the homecoming defeat to Brush seemed to take all of the wind out of the Cats' sails. The Mayfield Wildcats took advantage of the Cats' depression and added a 28-0 thrashing to their woes. Wanting to finish at least at .500 pet.. Head Coach Hodakievic regrouped his troops for the home contest against North. His men marched and trampled the Rangers 28-0, hoping for an even season, with the last game at Euclid. The Cats fell short, losing 30-12, but the highlight of the game was Bedford's Senior Wingback Dan Bilek s na- tional high school record-tying run. Bilek romped 99 yards for a B.H.S. score. Bilek was the team's Most Valuable Player, for his offensive contributions to the team. He was second in scoring with eight touchdowns for 48 pts., second in receiving with 18 grabs for 368 yds. (20.4 yds. per catch), including a 79 yard Touchdown connection from Junior QB Mark Massey. Bilek also was third in rushing with 24 carries for 204 yds. (8.5 yds. per carry). Bilek was chosen as first- team all-conference receiver, along with Senior Scott Keys, who was chosen as second-team all-conference offensive guard. Other senior honors belong to Brian Robinson, who lead the team in rushing with 63 carries for 362 yds. (5.7 yds. per carry). Defensively Mike Harvey, a transfer from Sandusky Perkins, was top defensive player and the Middle Linebacker lead the team with 106 tackles. Next year the Cats have two major powers returning for the offense. Second team AII-GCC quarterback Mark Massey, who lead the team in scoring with 51 pts., and leading receiver John Moore, who snatched 24 passes for 413 yds. (17.2 yds. per catch). They won their first meet over Willoughby South with a 15-45 win. Leading the way for the boys was Senior Vance Frazier, with oth- ers. such as Russ Peterson, Jeremy Lord, Quincy Walker, Cameron Brown, and Garth Peterson competing with him to be one of the top runners overall. There was an impressive Freshman, Kevin Oenk, who ranked frequently throughout the season in the top seven runners. When the season ended, the boys finished fifth in the Greater Cleveland Conference with a 4-6 record for the year. The girls' team also had a slow start; however their season didn't pick up. They ended with a 0-6 record, making them eighth in the Greater Cleveland Conference. Leading the way for the girls in the top five slots were Leanne Clair, Christi Sanders, Renee Jackson, Nancy Spieth, and Jennifer Babkowski. The entire team put forth a tremendous effort I They gave up much of their time and put in some hard work which, possibly next year, will pay off. Kevin Freyer Boy ’ Cro Country B.H.S. Before his head rule at B.H.S., Kennedy compiled numerous victories at Collmwood High School. Despite his 100th victory, 1987 was a difficult season for Kennedy and his Cats. With local papers not picking Bedford as much of a con- tender, early in the season the Cats be- gan to open watching eyes a little wider. Bedford ran a 5-3 record before meeting the league-leading and unde- feated Euclid Panthers. The Cats lost a close game in the fourth quarter, and this sort of ending haunted the Cats for several more games to come. Ineligibility also hung a dark cloud over the Cats' contending future as starting players were lost because of grades. The sec- ond half was characterized by inconsistency. The Cats would have their opponent reeling throughout three quarters of play, but they couldn't deliver the final blow. Bedford lost 5 games within the final 8 minutes. Sec- ond year Varsity Veterans Mike Johnson, Mario Scott, and Joe Williams led the Cats on the hardwood. Well bal- anced play by Juniors Torry Rollins, Mark Massey. John Moore, and Dwayne Howell instill confidence for the coming future of the Bearcats. Contention again is just around the corner for the Cats, adding members from the teams that compiled a 13-7 record for the J.V. and a 16-1 record for the Freshmen. The girls did their best and worked very hard to achieve their best times, and the hard work paid off! The girls placed a strong ninth among twenty-three teams at the district meet. They also came up third in the Greater Cleveland Conference. The final record was 7-5. With a new coach for the team came new coaching methods. The girls had to become accustomed to swimming before school and after school everyday (something new for most of the girls!). But these extremely hard practices were essential at the start of the season in order for the taper workouts to be valid during the later part of the year. Head Coach Tom O'Shea had help on the sidelines pushing to get these swimmers in top condition. Assistant Coaches Vicki Mast and Mike Madden also kept the swimmers on their toes! Not every girl who started this season made it to the end. The girls who stuck with the team all season and endured the tough workouts were: Freshmen - Lynn Deluca and Marie Ledbetter Sophomores - Julie Presby, Meagan Tulloch. Leslie Craig, and Karen Shuster Juniors - Nicole Urban, Kathy Ambroziak, Gina Miracle, Christiane Funcke Senior - Gina Spadaro Over the year, many personal best times were reached by some of the girls. The free relay team of Nicole Urban, Kathy Ambroziak. Gina Miracle, and Gina Spadaro (which has been together for more than two years) placed ninth in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:56.00 at the District Meet. Spadaro had an astounding time of 56.9 in her leg of that relay, which is just tenths of a second off the school record. These achievements are excel- lent, considering that this is the toughest dis- trict in the state, with the third toughest swimming. Finally, at the annual awards banquet, many of these dedicated girls were honored with various awards for their fine achieve- ments. Kathy Ambroziak was voted most valuable woman, and most outstanding awards went to Lynn Deluca. Julie Presby, Nicole Urban, and Gina Spadaro. Congratulations to all the girls on a fine swimming season! Boys' Swimming FRONT ROW: Don Bish. Rick Jewett. Danny Sokok wski. Zac Zaharewic . Garth Peterson. Shawn Berry. Steve Weilter, Assistant Coach Mike Madden This year our boys' swim team tried to keep their reputation as the best team in the G.C.C. Last season they shared the G.C.C. with Euclid, and the three years before they captured the en- tire title. After twelve members graduat- ed last year, the team was left with one senior. The team dropped from thirty members to eleven. Although not taking a G.C.C. title, the team finished with a successful winning season. In December the Bedford Lion's Club hosted the Lion's relay meet in our pool as they have done since the first Bedford swim team competed in the G.C.C. This year the boys: swim team successfully defended the trophy. The team won six out of eleven events and placed within the top three in the other events. The 1986-1987 swimming season was a difficult one for the team. Led by new coach Tom O'Shea, the third coach in three years, the swimmers had to ad- just to a disciplinary style of coaching. Due to the loss of members, swimmers were unable to fill all the lanes for most events, giving opponents at least a three point advantage in every event. Last season the team placed 19th in the District swim meet. This year the team, led by Senior Rob Lord and Ju- nior Diver Shawn Berry, placed ninth in the North-Northeast District swim meet. Shawn Berry broke two diving records. He also placed third in the Dis- trict and seventh at States. The mam strength of the team was not the top swimmers, but the team as a whole. During the season, team mem- bers discovered first and second places were not all that was needed; but third, forth, and fifth places were what would really decide team victories. The Bearcats had swimmers that could place in all events, which helped to make them a winning team. Fight Weather j Lose Coach Sophomore Bearcat Karen Hoklerman strikes out a batter with a perfect pitch. The 1987 Girls' Softball team had a disappointing 5-14 record. Early season practices were made havoc of by weather which would be 70 degrees one day and 3 inches of snow the next. A large turnout persevered the chaos created by the weather to open the sea- son on a muddy field with a come- from-behind victory over a now defunct Lumen. The opening victory was dimmed by five straight drubbings at the hands of G.C.C. opponents. Victories proved to be minimal in conference play, showing the strength of the Greater Cleveland Conference. Winning four of five inde- pendent diamond events showed that the Lady Bearcats could be competitive in other circles. Senior Left Fielder Kathie Mizak and First Baseman Kendra Stahl co-cap- tained the team. Their big bats and sol- id field play labeled them as standout performers. Right Fielder Stacey Douglas and Designated Hitter Sherry Nagy were the other two seniors who contributed. Next year, strong hopes for a victorious season will be provided by Juniors Jean Dunkel. Ronna Hurtuk, Juli Metz, and Nicole Urban. Much will be expected from Sophomores Lee Ann Cumley and Megan Tulloch and Fresh- man Sue Laskowski. Coach Bistritz cites a need for desire and a more serious attitude of the team as things that would make his second year as head coach more successful. Being pressed into the head role after an injury incapacitated Coach Marunowski midway through preseason practice was a task not to be envied. Picking up a loose ball. Juli Mat moves to make the out. GIRLS' TRACK TEAM FACED ADVERSITY There are certain sports teams at B.H.S. which always seem to rise to the occasion despite great odds against them. One such team this year was the Lady Cats' track squad. In the end. consisting of 18 dedicated athletes, they finished 3rd in the G.C.C. with a 4-3 record. As with any high school sports team, there are going to be many students who decide not to or cannot compete for the duration of the season. This year was no different when approximately 10 out of 30 members didn't stay with the team throughout the season. Although, it may sound contradictory, this team's success came from unity. The girls who ’stuck with it performed very well together in meets and sup- ported one another. This was aided greatly by valuable coaching. First year assistants Mr. Hennen and Miss Schwab stepped in and took over for most of March when Head Coach Anderson wasn't able to instruct. The coaches were great. comment- ed Junior Kim Drayton. ’’They, understood our personal problems and we could really talk to them. An apprehensive Coach Anderson re- turned (after March) to a squad of mostly juniors who were willing to make sacrifices. Those who stayed all season would work hard for a satisfying end re- sult. Giving up their personal time to practice in inconsistent outdoor conditions (90 degrees - 35 degree range) taught discipline and dedication. On a personal note. Coach Anderson would like to congratulate the girls on a great season in spite of many difficulties and road blocks. It's amazing we do as well as we do with all the problems; we've overcome a lot, added Anderson. GIRLS' TRACK 105 Senior track speedster Kelly Warren had a hamstring injury early on in the season. This seemed to put a damper on Bedford's almost guaranteed first place finish in dash events. Coach Kimberly didn't worry as the under- classmen came to the rescue. Junior Larry Smith took up much slack and strong performances from Charles Bai- ley. Robert Grider, and Robin Duckworth, provided additional support. In the field events were Sen- iors Joe Williams, who led the team in the high jump, and Dan Bilek, who tied records in the pole vault. Warren returned to good health around the G.C.C. meet in which Bedford placed fourth. Bedford's dashmen were the only spikers to advance all the way to State finals. The 400 meter relay team of Warren, Bailey. Grider, and Duckworth were the sole representa- tives of B.H.S. in Columbus. In the 100m dash. On May 22, the elegant affair was presented with the theme ’’Will You Still Love Me” by Chicago. All reserved tickets were sold out days in advance for the evening of dinner, dance, and romance. An area band entitled Intrud- er” provided the music entertainment. Last year's Queen, Diane Goga, gave up her throne and crown to a tearful and overjoyed Vickie Maji, the 1987 reigning Queen, elected by her peers and friends from B.H.S. Her attendants were Juniors Tracy Ringo and Lisa Slaby. The evening was hosted by Ju- nior Master of Ceremonies Vince DiCorpo. The evening continued and concluded at the school cafeteria, which was mas- terfully decorated as a Las Vegas casi- no. There were gambling tables with play money where guests could try their luck and reedem their winnings for prizes. The prizes included a car stereo, bicycles, and a color television auctioned off by the D.J. Tonight.
