EPIC-1986 VOLUME 60 BEDFORD SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 481 NORTHFIELD ROAD BEDFORD, OHIO 44146 Title 1 ON THE LINE The 1985-1986 school year got off to a rocky start for B.H.S. The 6 mill school levy bombed in May of ’85 and failed again in November. The Battling Bearcat football team fought hard but had a rough season. Winter hit the Bedford area hard. However, with the coming of the new year and the ending of the first semester students, teachers, and parents saw hope. We put our troubles behind us and battled forward. In February of 1986 the badly needed school levy passed. Several courses in the 1986-87 program of studies were threatened if the levy had failed. The boys’swim team shared the Greater Cleveland Confer- ence title with Euclid as co-champs of 1986. The girls swim team took 2nd place the GCC. The girls basketball team won the GCC championship, and both boys and girls’ basketball teams won sectional championships. 1986 was an eventful year and one we won’t easily forget. Although there were tragedies along with the victories and joys, the communities of the Bedford School District will persevere and strive for excellence as we have time and time again. The theme for the 1986 Epic is “On The Line, which simply says that B.H.S. may be down at times but never out. 2 Opening Theme Opening Theme 3 LIVES ON THE LINE An entire city block was destroyed in Philadelphia Police tried to evict members of the racial group MOVE from their fortified rowhouse by dropping a small bomb on the building A fire was started by the device and about 60 houses were destroyed Riots were an almost daily occurence in South America as blacks protested Apar theid In this photo, a white man runs from jeering group of stonethrowing blacks in downtown Johannesburg as widespread violence continued to breakout throughout the country The space program moved ahead. The explosion was the first in- flight diaster in 56 manned U.S. space missions. Christa McAuliffe. a teacher from New Hamfsshire. was one of the crew members. World Events 5 HOMECOMING 1985 HOMECOMING PARADE AND PEP RALLY The music of the Bedford High School Marching Band danced through the raindrops on the night of October 10, heralding the arrival of the Homecoming parade. Behind our band came the candidates for Homecoming Queen-Beth Kucera, escort Alan Tullock; Becki Hughes, es- cort Todd McRitchie; Paula Dowling, es- cort Jason Hall; Polly Bowen, escort Greg Zaharewicz; and Kelli Masseria, es- cort Sean Smith. Then came the floats: Juniors, “Give’m A Boo-Boo; Sophomores, Pooh Says “We Will Winnie; Band. “Rise Above Mayfield;” and the Senior Float, “Pee-Wee Rides Over Mayfield. At the end of the parade came stu- dents representing the elementrary schools and Heskett Middle School. Spirits were high as the pep rally be- gan. There were students yelling for their class, their float, their favorite can- didate for queen; parents remembering their favorite Homecoming and children hoping for as much fun when their high school years arrive. Coach Hodakevic announced the var- sity football team and the fans got rowdier; then the cheerleaders took over. Joan Pracejus, captain of the cheer- leaders, had the seniors from the foot- ball team show off their “acting abili- ties. Finally, Mike Salvucci, Senior Class President, announced the winner of the float contest: the Band, “Rise Above Mayfield.” Then he answered the big question. Who was the 1985 Homecom- ing Queen? As Kelli Masseria was crowned, the tears fell and the hugs were tight. 1985 Homecoming Court: Beth Kucera. Escort Alan Tulloch Paula Dowling. HOMECOMING FLOATS Winnie the Pooh was the star of the Sophomore’s homecoming float. “Pooh says we will Winnie” was the class of 88’s first float. “We had a good time building it, although we never thought we would get the float finished,” com- mented Jackie Stoker and Gretchen Hido. “We kept running out of paper to make the flowers.” “Give ’Em a Boo-Boo” was the slogan for the Junior’s float. The cartoon characters Yogi Bear and his side-kick Boo-Boo Bear sat in a boxing ring. Ju- nior Missy Stewart said, “We had trouble at first because we couldn’t de- cide on a theme, but we feel the float came out rather well.” For the class of ’86, their Homecom ing float, “Pee-Wee Rides Over Mayfield,” was a bit of a disapointment. Pee-Wee Herman, from the hit movie Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, rode his mo- torized bicycle over a Mayfield Wildcat. However, when they started pulling the float, the Bearcat ring fell down and the character Pee-Wee Herman began to stoop over. The winner was the Band’s float, “Rise Above Mayfield.” This colorful float had a hot-air balloon rising to the clouds. This was the first time the Marching Band had won since 1980. It was held in the spacious Brookridge Party Center in Parma. Guests were served a buffet dinner of ham, roast beef and rigatoni. They danced to popular tunes and golden oldies of The Party Boys. “This Could Be The Night” was a night for soft lights, romance and a wonderful time. The theme song, “This Could Be The Night” by Loverboy, continued into the After-Prom held in the high school cafe- teria. The juniors decorated the cafeteria with big city skylines and glitter. The crowd seemed to enjoy dancing to records played by “Rock-On,” a fun-lov- ing D.J. The Juniors must be commended for thier hard work and dedication to the 1986 Junior-Senior Prom. Even though it may not have shown it on the scoreboards, Bedford is and will always be a victorious team. Throughout the season the team had the spirit to hit, throw, catch and become a better team because of it. The Cats finished 1-9. When Tommy Blythwood was asked if he ever felt like just giving up, he replied, “After working so hard through the summer and playing a game that I like so much, 1 never felt like quiting.” Senior Linebackers Randy Cumley and Ron Bornino felt that this year’s defense was stronger than the defense of past Bearcat teams, but was put in critical situations too often. Nine Bearcats recieved special awards at season’s end. Louis Graves was honored because he maintained a 3.739 grade point average throughout the season. The other Varsity awards were chosen by the team itself. Randy Cumley was voted Most Valuable Play- er. Scott Thomas won the best offensive lineman award, Brian Robinson was best offensive back, Ronnie Dawson was best defensive lineman, Dan Bilek was best defensive back, Kenny Niland was most improved player, Eric Black recieved the Bearcat award for never giving up against all odds, and Ron Bornino won the True Grit award for being the per- son everyone could depend on. Along with the awards selected by the team, three of the winners were also honored as all-conferance. Randy Cumley made first team offense, and Scott Thomas and Ronnie Dawson made second team offense. At this point we can hope that the dedication of the current Varsity, J.V., and Freshmen players pays off in the upcoming years. Remember, we have a team of winners. Football team has brought some spirit back into the lives of the varsity coaches, for a bright outlook for next year, as it put together an even 5-5 record. After the Varsity’s disappointing sea- son the coaches can look for strong tal- ent coming aboard form the J.V. squad, which as a team showed strong acts of domination by gaining all its victories by shutouts. After dropping the season opener by a point 7-6 to Chagrin Falls, the team put together back to back victories over Cleveland Rhodes and Garfield Hts. Bedford then lost two at the hands of al- ways tough Willoughby. 26-8, and Men- tor ,28-8. The Cats regained their confidence by back to back shutouts over Brush and Mayfield, each by the score of 6-0. Bedford next shook off a thrashing from Eastlake to win its final shutout 6-0 over Euclid and closed out the season with a hard fought loss to Maple, 12-8. This year marks a change for the ladies as they finished the season with a 9 win 12 loss record. The Bearcats were held together by senior captains Barb Shafer and Betsey Lee. Other senior players were Chrissy Wilson, Rochell Sears, PJ Mould, Chontel Crenshaw and Carrie Bowie. The Bearcats were coached by fourth year head coach Gayle Papesh. She de- scribed the team as having “a lot of depth” and stated that the season was very successful for the Cats. Coach Kennedy had two returning starters, seniors Kevin Dancy and John Wil- liams. for his base pillars and one senior, nine juniors, and one sophomore with which to create. When the season concluded. Coach Kennedy had constructed a winner, with the varsity finishing a re- spectable 14-9. with a Sectional Championship and making it to Districts, falling one step short of last year's path to the finals. The team played .500 ball for most of the season, until the final weeks when they won 4 of their last 5, nding high off a 72-46 blowout of Willougby South, smoking straight into post season tournament play. In the Sectionals. Bedford shocked Shaker 67-62 and stymied John Adams with a 52-47 victory, to take Bedford to the Districts held at Wylie Athletic Center in Maple Hts. This is where the magic ran out, when Bedford rematched the Shaw Cardinals Last year the Cats pulled a final-second victory over the Cardin ails in the same District semi-final. This year the story had a different turn with Shaw controlling our Cats and emerging with an 89-56 stomping over the undersized Bearcats The Bearcats’ victories came by strong team play. There were no bloated averages, no single standout players, but consistent averages of double figures by at least 3 to 4 players each night. Next season should be another highly successful one with a stronger base of at least six possible starting seniors. All of these girls and senior Car- la Oatman have played on the varsity team for the past three years. At the beginning of the season, the girls began with a bang as they stomped Shaker 71-36. The next outing was an upset as Bedford lost to Solon 47-56. This loss gave the Lady Bearcats the strength to compile a ten game winning streak until Euclid defeated the Bearcats for an early season G.C.C. title tie. Lat- er in the season, Euclid lost and Bedford became G.C.C. Champs. The varsity completed the season with a 20-3 record, the highest winning percentage in the history of Bedford Girls Basketball. The team earned first place in the G.C.C. with a 13-1 record, won a Sectional Championship, and was District Runnerup. The prospect for next season must be considered one of rebuilding. There will be three returning letter winners, Dena Tiggett, Lisa Callahan, and Diane Ebel. Nichele Wilson goes up for the jump shot and scores between two defenders. At the begin- ning of the season three-quarters of this record had already been achieved. This year our team was disappointed because they had to share their G.C.C. Champi- onship title with their swimming rival, the Euclid Panthers. In December the Bedford Lion’s Club hosted a relay meet in our pool, as they have done since the first Bedford swim team competed in the G.C.C. This year was special because it was the first time that both our boys and girls team took first place in that meet. The 1985-86 swimmimng season was a rough one for our team. They did not compete in one single meet with a full roster. At each meet at least one swimmer was either sick or injured. The team overcame this problem by placing swimmers in events which they had nev- er competed in before. However, the team still emerged as winners against their opponents. Our teams best come- back from injury was when Greg Zaharewicz came back from a shoulder injury to help the team prevail over the Euclid Panthers in their last dual meet. Bedford had five great swimmers who held in there through four years of swim- ming and three different coaching staffs. These four-year Varsity swimmers were Ed Tuma, Lee Trojan, Todd Hunt, Greg Zaharewicz and Jeff Ambrosiak. Greg and Jeff were our two record swimmers. Greg broke two records in his junior year, one was when he was part of the 400 freestyle relay team with a time of 3:23.49, the other record was the 200 freestyle relay team with a time of 1:49.51 Jeff did not break a record but he came as close as you can, by tying the 500 freestyle record of 5:12.5 set by Ken Doak in 1979. The main strength of our team was not just our top swimmers but the whole team. During the season our swimmers found out that the first and second places were all that they needed, the third, fourth, and fifth place was what would decide which school won. Our team had swimmers who could place in all events which is what made them a winning team. Todd Hunt flie out ahead of his opponents at the start of the lOOyrd breastroke. Al Tulloch and team captain Jeff Ambrosiak help to get the team siked up before a meet. 96 Boys Swimming Senior diver Ed Tuma does an inward dive. 91 Beachwood 79 97 Trinity 73 106 Channel 65 120 Bay Village 49 28 Berea 55 92 Mentor 78 114' Maple 57 107 Brush 62 127 Mayfield 39 95 Euclid Lions Relays 1st G.C.C. The men finished with a 1-9 overall record, with their lone victory coming against Willoughby South. On the other side of the coin, the lady runners, led by Sharlene Jackson and also fueled by 1st and 2nd year perfor- mances finished with a 2-6 record. They registered a season opening victory over Garfield and a conference opening victo- ry over Willoughby South. In the G.C.C. meet the men finished 6th out of 7 teams, the women 7th out of 8 teams. In the districts the men and women closed the season 11th out of 14 and 13th out of 16 teams respectively. At the cross country banquet.
