His friendly relation- ship with the student body is responsible for the smooth functioning of our over-crowded school. Mr. McCrae. as assistant principal, has the thank- less job of insisting thot we take advantage of our American privilege, the attendance of a public high school. Despite some resistance from the student body he accomplished his task, and managed to maintain his sense of humor. The quiet efficiency of office routine was the result of excellent efforts of the clerical force. Their contributions to the school program were indispensible. An impressive initiation of the new members opened the year’s activities. The major goals of the club are to promote ability and desire to work with others and to be of service to all. These goals are accomplished through such things as the Christmas Party, the Letter Dance, the Faculty Tea. and the Pa-Ma- Me Party. Club programs carried the theme of Down on the Farm.” Included as some of the program activities were We're off on the hay wagon. the Style Show, the Harvest Hop, the Hayride. and the annual Play. The club is sponsored by Mrs. MacArthur, ably assisted by Miss Fenton. The opening social event of the school year was the Harvest Hop. Barney Cooper Drum Major The Bedford High School Marching Band created a sen- sation at half-time festivities during the football season. The band, led by Barney Cooper and six high-stepping majorettes, spent hours of work to provide a new show for each appear- ance. Other activities of this fine representative organization include the Tri-City Band concert, staged through the co- operaton of the Bedford, Garfield Heights, and Maple Heights bands, and the band concert, which is an annual spring feature. In a preseason preview the team held Lakewood, the Lake Erie League champions, to a scoreless tie. Opening the schedule Ravenna and Mentor cooled the Bearcats enthusiasm with second-half defeats. John Hay proved to be our only victim. The colorful homecoming festival paled and faded in the rain as Garfield won the first con- ference game. Injuries to key experienced personell and the evident lack of experience caused the collapse which resulted in four more league game losses. The coupe-de-grace was administered by the Berea Braves, who in the last game of the season, cinched their championship and handed the Bearcats their worst defeat. One hope for next year is that the large group of boys who weathered the storm and have one or more years to play: the second hope is a fine group of boys from the freshmen team. The basket-ball squad, faced with a rugged sche- dule, fared as poorly as the football team. Despite the fact that several members of the hardwood squad had played four years of basket- ball. they still compiled an unenviable record of one win in a sixteen game schedule. The squad was composed of two senior letter- men returning from last year's team, along with four other seniors, three juniors, and three sopho- mores. Although Waldo Mathews had a losing record in his first year as basket-ball coach, he did have an opportunity to teach new techniques which will benefit the future basketball teams of Bed- ford High. CHRISTMAS PARTY The annual Christmas party given by the Friendship Club girls for kindergarten and first grade children was the usual huge suc- cess. Toys were donated by club members and the local merchants, although many of the toys were purchased by the club treasury. The children, shy at first, soon got into the swing of things and entertainment and food were well received. Nothing, however, could equal the squeals of delight and brightened faces that greeted the coming of Santa Claus. All the hard work and care put into the planning of the party was repaid a hundred fold with one look at the delighted youngsters. Treasurer; LOUISE STEWART Mrs. Stewart is a teacher of commercial subjects. In addition to her teaching, she sponsors Student Council which has grown rapidly under her guid- ance. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is the governing group of the student body. Under the direction of Louise Stewart, their advisor, the council had a pronounced influence on student life. The fields of endeavor are as varied as the school program with no less that twenty-eight committees were in action this year. Pictured on these pages are a few of the more important functions of the council, many of which are inter-related such as the hall guards and the student court. The council and its activities are fine examples of democratic action in the public schools. This is excellent training for life in the U. S. A. The squad saw their twenty seven match winning streak stopped by the Mustangs of Maple Heights in a hard fought meet, 26-8. which also cost the Bearcats the conference championship. The team started the season with one state champion, and two runners-up, and the largest group of determined boys who ever took to the mats. No one caused any trouble until the Mustangs, who were successful for the first time in six years. As usual the wrestlers concluded the season by scoring well at the conference tournament at Maple Heights. They also made an excellent showing at the state meet in Lakewood. Program Chairman COUNCIL ON WORLD AFFAIRS The Council on World Affairs is composed of juniors and seniors interested in world news and the problems that face the United Nations. Twice monthly informal meetings, held at the homes of various club members, feature speakers, debates, discussions, or films. World Affairs Each year the Rotary Club sends two junior members to a state convention held in Cincinnati, and one senior member to New York City. Members of the club also took part in a mock United Nations Assembly at Western Reserve University, and a Council on World Affairs Institute at the Statler Hotel in Cleveland. SENIOR SHORTHAND CLUB The Senior Shorthand Club is limited to students enrolled in the senior Short- hand class. Monthly meetings are held at different member’s homes. The members transcribe orally from Today's Secretary in order to gain pratical experience that will aid in future jobs. To climax the evening, refreshments are usually served by the charming hostesses. This year the club sold Christmas greens and collected tax stamps to help finance a trip in the spring. 76 Be Brief SHORTHAND CLUB OFFICERS Rose Wargo. Mary Lou Nehas. Jackie Taylor WINIFRED COOK Miss Cook, in addition to teaching senior English and Latin, is advisor to the Latin Club. She was instrumental in the founding of the local chapter of the National Honor Society and serves as its advisor. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Bedford Chapter of National Honor Society, established in 1939. was organized to promote the qualities of scholar- ship, character, and service among the students of the high school. Each spring, seniors found to be outstanding in these qualities, are admitted to membership at a candle- light induction service, and juniors, not yet elegible for membership, are pledged. To be asked to join Honor Society is a goal for every high school student and those who achieve it regard it as one mark of success in their high school careers. JUNIOR INDUCTEES—1954 Nancy Tusel. He is one of the coaches of the Junior High intramural football program. CURTAIN GOING UP The choice of the senior class play Curtain Going Up was unusual in several respects. The play was based upon the actual casting and production of a school play. The stage remained bare of scenery during the entire production. The audience was an integral part of the production, even to the participation of some of them in the play. Played by a cast of twenty-three seniors and directed by Mrs. Morean in her usual flawless manner, the production proved to be a hit with two large audiences of students and parents. Roby. Wargo.
