The art department is equipped with all the paro- phernalia necessary for work in the field of ceramics and next year students will have the opportunity to study this branch of art. LIBRARY The Library of Bedford l-ligh School is the largest and one of the most plea- sant rooms in our school for quiet study- ing and recreational reading. This year, being twice as large as it was last year, it enables more students to make use ot its facilities. Not only does the library have good facilities for research and reference work, but it contains a varied collection of books, periodicals, and newspapers tor reading enjoyment. Although Miss Sexton is librarian, she admits that she could not get along without her library assistants. The duties of the assistants are typing cards and pockets for in books, taking atten- dance, shelving books, and checking in mail. The Commercial course of Bedford High is devoted to making successful business peo- ple. You begin typing in the middle of your Sophomore year. By the time you are a Junior, you have mastered the keys by knowing the finger placements, In your Junior year you also have shorthand, bookkeeping and office everything is constantly impressed upon all students in our Commercial Department. Here we see two students attempting to build up skill in filing. This is a skill which requires much practice if one is really to become proficient, There are few things that exasperate a business man more than having his secretary unable to find quickly a paper she has filed. The instructors in the commercial depart- ment make certain that each student is well qualified before placing their stamp of approval on him or her. 1231 practice which teaches you the use of ma- Chines. The Junior year of shorthand is spent learning to read and write the correct symbols. Emphasis is especially placed on the way you write the symbols on the paper. The Junior year of typing is learning how to place business letters correctly on a page, Speed tests are also useful in building up your typing speed and illiminating errors. ln your Senior year you learn to master typing and shorthand as well as you can. HOMEMAKING One of the important courses in the High School is the Vocational Home Economics Department, It teaches girls who wish to become wives in the future how to sew, cook, decorate a home and many other things. One of the most vital instructions is how to handle a budget. Everyone knows how hard it is to maintain a good household with the expenses of today. But where there is a will, there is a way and you certainly learn the way . Here the girls are taught the parts of electrical devices in the home. Everyone knows a lot of a woman's time is spent at a stove preparing the nourishing meals. The furniture in the department is just like at home. Here a few girls are taking it easy. ANNA JANE SIMPSON MRS. ANNA JANE SIMPSON earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Indiana State Teachers' College in 1954g she has taught in Southmont and Confluenceg she came to B. H. She has a Bach- elor of Science degree from the University of Illinois. HOMEMAKING ln this picture the girls are pinning a pattern on material. Then they will cut the pattern out. They are in the process of making a garment for them- selves. Learning to sew often saves much money for the homemakers. Another advantage is to have different clothes from other people. If you sew for yourself, you also know that no one else will have the same kind of outfit. The girls are taught to make dresses, skirts, blouses, robes, and many other articles. In the picture shown here the girls are pinning material on a screen. They learn to cover many things over to make it practically new. Such things as pillows can also be covered if they get soiled or become worn or if a change is desired. HOMEMAKING il J 5 s During Christmas the girls learned to make decorations for a centerpiece and also clever ways to wrap Christmas presents. They were both inexpensive and beautiful to look at. Shown here is a sample of some of the center- pieces. They learn to make a house beau- tiful and glamorous not only during Christmas but all year around. We see a few girls at sewing machines After cutting the patterns, it is time to sew Soon the piece of clothing will be finished. '71 Here we see the F. F. A. Membership entails the use of originality and a coordinated capacity for visualizing, direc- ting, managing, budget control, writing, edit- ing, purchasing, selling, and collecting. The coordination of the many steps in publishing a Yearbook makes the production a business enterprise which should be a challenge to every member of the staff, and when the job is well done, the Yearbook remains as a lasting credit to the staff. Any staff will eventually get the book out, but how much easier and more successful the work can be when the right method is followed. How much more it could have meant to some of us in fun, pleasure, and thrill ot a real creative accomplishment, had we not shirked our responsibility. HONOR SCCIETIES Many are called but few are chosen. Such is the condition which exists with the honor societies. Their objectives and stan- dards are kept rigidly high, so that member- ship is limited to those having initiative and incentive to head their classes. This organi- zation wants leaders not followers. lt is based on four attributes: scholarship, leader- ship, character, and service-to the school and to the community. Membership in the societies is the goal of all students. The Junior Honor Society is composed of eighth and ninth graders who meet twice a month with their faculty advisor, Mr. Behrers, 90- to discuss improvements needed in the school and community, and to organize a plan of action for such matters. Although inactive, you retain membership throughout your high school career, unless you receive a failing grade in any subject. This automatically cancels your name from the roll. The Senior Honor Society is composed of juniors and seniors ranking in the upper third of their class who are chosen by a special faculty committee. Their advisor is Miss Litzinger. Although comparatively inactive, all members are very happy to wear the pin which identifies them as the chosen few. 'S-. At the meetings the sponsor tries to give the pupils an idea of what college life will be like. They discuss and ask questions concerning what will be expected of them once they are there. The sponsor helps them in any way she can to select the right college. This club will help anyone who is considering a college education, MATH CLUB The Senior High Moth Club was organized this year by Mr Heacock It meets during the activity period on the first and third Tues day of every month In this club the mem bers learn short cuts in multiplication, add: tion, subtraction, and division, They also work amusing puzzles which require math Since this club was organized this Year, the members have not completely decided upon a program, but something will be worked out so that a definite program will be followed in future years. HI-LITES This busy group of people, under the super- vision of Mr. Radle, works hard to publish six issues of our school paper each year. ln organizing an issue, the editor-in-chief assigns each person a particular article to be written. Then each article must be proof read very carefully, so that the commercial girls can type them without much difficulty. The whole process ends up in the printing office From these we get our finished product, The Bed- ford Hi-Lifes. JR. HI GH JUNIOR HIGH BAND The Junior High Band is under the direction of both Mr. Hunsicker and Mr. Mitchell, This organization is composed of about one hun- dred students from seventh, eighth, and ninth grades. lt gives the boys and girls experience in band work and the fundamentals of playing with a group before they are put into the regular band. This also gives them a chance to see what they can do by themselves without the help of senior high students. They meet once a week, for rehearsals. BAND 293 I. V, LST Rnw One: Rusty Keller. He coached football, basketball and track at Baldwin Township and came to Bed- ford High School from Clairton High School in l95O. He has not had a winning team every year, but he has always had good teams, The last two years have been highly satisfactory and we confidently look forward to many more splendid years with Coach Wilkinson at the helm.
