The season started L f' with a call for strong-armed men to work out in the gym and loosen the long preserved muscles. With the lapse of about two weeks, 'L the final call was made for all candidates trying for Varsity positions. The 1928 Varsity baseball squad owes its success to none other than ff Coach Ullery, a former Penn State star. At the time of Sisler's injury :Kxgj Bill Ullery was called to H11 his position on the first sack for St. QQ Louis Browns, and at the end of that season Bill finished with a ,il , batting average of .35O. My Wade Rainey, behind the bat, was always the old reliable, and could always be depended upon to come through at the time when hits . .Q , were needed the most. l 5 The pitchers who saw the most service were Sweitzer and Savanick, 1,112 and both boys had plenty of speed and curves. When one would l xp weaken, the other was always ready at a minute's notice for action. ,XS Dean and Saltzenberger could cover the first sack as first sackers I . should, and certainly were mean with the stick. K Williams, at second, was not much in weight, but what was lacking .Qui in weight was made up in speed. lg Rubis, covering short, had all the qualities of a good short-stop pi, and covered his territory with ease. or Cardamone was injured in the early part of the season, but was P4 Xl' E333 N ik 1 ' s I-7 ' , , V vu,-vin AA ,fr -5. . He was one of the best batters on the squad. Maholish, a Varsity man for two years, was a sure bet. Pitchers .could let anyone hit to left field and not feel worried for Andy was always under them. Horchak, in center, was the strong arm of the outfield. Mike had an arm good enough for any league and was noted as a hard-hitter. McCarthy in right field held his position like the rest-hit, run, catch, and anything a baseball player needs. - Houtz saw plenty of action as he filled Cardamone's place on third during the early part of the season and was used in the outfield pretty regularly. Long drives were Houtz's specialties. Hill was another who saw plenty of action, as he played both infield and outfield. Speed was the one thing Hill had lenty of. Gourley and Bialek were always on hand and could? be depended upon when a substitution was necessary. After all, a team is not complete without such men as Gourley and Bialek. Mento and Luxton were on hand at all times and had it not been for the ability of the other two hurlers, would have seen more action. Mento was noted for 'his famous slow ball and Luxton just opposite for his famous black horse. Both infield and outfield worked in close harmony, and this led to the success of the team. Losing only four men by graduation, Beckley College can look forward to having another team just as good, if not better, for the 1929 season. 2 t im., ,.,, ,,,,,,,,,,.,,,..,-,.......,.,.....-..,.........,..........,-.,....,..,...,..,.,,..-,-..........-.--.
