, C QQQI7 iQ1'f7Q f7.l' . 21 i 21 dxf! -53 Ad..- SJ 5,4-- ': Opening the season with Allentown Prep, Beckley College met one of the touchiest opponents on the schedule. The game was played on a muddy field, with the slight drizzling rain continuing throughout the entire contest. The game ended 13-O in favor of Allentown, but they did not leave the field without know- ing that they had been in a bitterly fought contest. Elizabethtown was the next opponent on the schedule, Beckley winning by a single touchdown. The next game with Gettysburg, was, without exception, one of the most bit- terly fought battles staged on Island Park during the 1928 season. Both teams fought nip and tuck during three and the greater part of the fourth quarter, without any results. During the latter part of the contest, the fans were treated with a little fistic action on the part of the players, but the referee spoiled the treat by retiring both men to the side-lines. With but 30 seconds of play remaining, Densevich, a blond guard of noted ability, blocked a kick on Gettysburg's 20-yard line and scored a touchdown for Beckley. And Todd then kicked the goal. The game ended immediately after the next kick-off. ,X V, we A, .... P 'f-'il ,- ir., , X. ,I , ,,' V, X ,,. 1 , ,I :J ,, , .V ,I 'N '- 1.1 N ff - EQ 5.12 :riff-Ili -41 252 IP'

OOTBALL! The sound of the word sends a thrill up everyone's spine, that is, of those who have had any- thing to do with the game. And at Beckley College everyone has experienced that thrill, for everyone was back of the team-yelling, screaming, and praying till the finish. It was the good coaching, coupled with the fighting spirit of both players and rooters, that made the successful season that Beckley College enjoyed this year on the gridiron. Coach George Snell, a former Penn State star, came to Beckley College with a wonderful reputation, only to add more to his fame. Snell formerly played with the Well-known Pottsville Maroons, once world championship team of pro- fessional ranks. Snell's description of football, as everyone will remember, is: It's a man's game, and, Dog eat dog and you eat 'em first. Snell had plenty of good material to work With, as there were several men back from last season. Mears, Barr, Rainey, Horchak, and McGinley were on hand at the first call, and plenty of new material was available. Coach Snell gave everyone a fair tryout. 2 1 A . 4, -. J HV. . Villanova, if you will - recall, was Beckley's greatest rival last year, and the game ended O-O deadlock. It naturally was looked forward to, being the greatest game on the home field this season. They came to Harrisburg with such stars as Terry of Mt. Carmel, all-scholastic full back of 1927, Dellabredia, guard on All- state Champion's team of 1927, and others of high school and preparatory school fame. But that old grit and fight which prevailed in Beckley's 1928 machine over- came every obstacle in their path, and ran rough-shod over their opponents. When the final whistle blew, Beckley's colors flew high over the Island field, with a score of 19-O tucked safely under their belts. Millersville afforded the next opposi- tion, but the team was in the pink of condition and its spirits were high as a result of the victory over Villanova, and as a result they pinned another victory to the list. Score-12-6. The score was tied 6 all, at half-time, and after a fiery talk by Coach Snell, the Beckley boys returned with renewed strength and vigor and could not be halted in their charge toward the goal-line. On the defense they just forced Millersville to punt at all times. ., ... gil., 2.5.3 .
