Gates, Treasurer Dear Members of the Graduating Class of 1958, It was six years ago that you entered the secondary school--and it is just six years ago that it was my good fortune to join you at that time. I have observed your class progress in the B. C. I. junior High School and then the B. C. I. Senior High School. You have come a long way. I am satisfied that if you keep up your good work you will enter your desired vocation with the spirit of victory. How many things we start ali through life but leave after a while without accomplishing any- thing with such efforts. We just let the efforts die. Many a genius has thrown himself into the discard because of the dropping of important efforts. There is a famous saying by William james, the noted psychologist. He said: Keep the faculty of effort alive in you by a little gratuitous exercise every day. This is , be system- atically ascertic or heroic in little unnecessary points. Do every day or two something, for no other reason than that you would rather not do it, so that when the hour of dire need draws nigh, it might find you not unnerved and untrained to stand the test. We must learn to finish what we start. By being more self-dependent, we grow in confidence and power. Think of the advice of Socrates: KNOW THYSELF-. The more independent we are in our thinking and manner of life, the abler we become to handle every emergency courageously. The day of Commencement will be your day to hold and to cherish as your own. Enjoy it, revel in it, and so conduct yourselves in the future that you, your families , and your friends will always be proud of it as you will be. With confidence in your own abilities and faith in the wisdom of the goal you have set in life , you will be able to adjust and to adapt to winds and storms , come what may. You won't be thrown far from your course , I am sure. May God bless you and bring you the rich reward that you deserve. Sincerely yours , H- john F. Smith Supervising Principal f -1 'Qgm A N ,A ,it-AQ 1 gr In Memorj' Of Ronald flhlliron 1941 These hearts were woven of human joys and cares , Washed marvelously with sorrow, swift to mirth. The years had given them kindness. Dawn was theirs , And sunset, and the colors of the earth. These had seen movement, and heard music known Slumber and waking, loved, gone proudly friendedp Felt the quick stir of wonder: sat alone: I 1955 Touched flowers and furs and cheeks . All this is ended. There are waters blown by changing winds to laughter And lit by the rich skies, all day. And after Frost, with a gesture, stays the waves that dance And wandering loveliness. He leaves a white Unbroken radiance , A width, a shining peace, under the night. Rupert Brooke 5 mx wk W zZfg,,w f m f' f ww tr' Qi RUSSELL E. C. I. One fateful autumn month, September 1954 , will always remain a vivid recollection, since it was then that we stood on the threshold of our high school careers. Although at first we were a little worried and bewildered, we soon conquered this feeling and became a very ambitious class. We organized and elected the following class officers: Helen Grimes --------- President Eileen Traveny ---- Vice-President Iudy Ensbrenner ------- Secretary Ioy Kaye Krise- -------- Treasurer Our first project was the annual bake sale which-netted us a profit exceeding that of any class before us. Happy, but not satisfied, we sponsored a skating party. With the accomplishment of these two projects , it began to look as thousgh our dream of a trip to Washington might someday become a reality. We chose blue and white as our class colors , and at long last received our class hats Our Freshman year pas sed quickly, and we soon became sophisticated Sophomores. Impressed with our new status , we organized quickly. We spent most of this year just getting used to Senior High and our new responsibilities. Under the leadership of David Shrock--President, Ioy Kaye Krise--Vice-President, Sally Witherow--Secretary, and Carol Leyo--Treasurer we held a very successful Christmas Dance. Another year passed and we were no longer Sophomores. September 1956 ushered in our Iunior year, which proved to be a very busy and happy one. To guide our class we selected our class rings and with their arrival came a new feeling of closeness to B. C. I. Our first activity for 1956 was a Halloween Dance with music by Dan's Ding Dongs. By sponsoring a Valentine's Dance and a Dungaree Drag, we increased our funds considerably. However, we Juniors felt the real fiesta was during the long, hard hours of decorating, when ink-smeared hands and broken nails were the order of the day. After seeing the results, we all agreed it was worth the effort. The patios, colored lights and the wonderful music of Ray Sharbaugh made this prom a truly memorable one. Time slipped by and we awoke in September 1957 to find ourselves stately Seniors. In this , our final year at B. C. I. we elected as our officers: Iudy Ensbrenner-- President, David Shrock--Vice-President, Joanne Sinclair--Secretary, and Anna Mae Bretzin--Treasurer. Our activities this year have included the sponsoring of a Christmas Dance,, a bake sale, and the selling of Christmas Cards and magazines. As this goes to press, our long-dreamed of trip to our nation's capital is just around the corner, and we are all eagerly awaiting it, To be sure, each of us will go his separate way, but we shall always be united in memory as we think, not only of our Alma Mater, but the lessons we have learned and the friends we have made. Among these friends are the underclassmen to whom we wish luck and happiness in their future years at B. C. I. Class Prophecy B. C. I. Senior High School's graduating class of 1958 held its first class reunion at Palm Beach, Florida, November 21 , 1963. The event, which lasted three days , was climaxed by a sumptuous banquet on the third day. Prepared by some of the former Home Economics Club members--Kathryn Peacock, Catherine Willey, June Shope , and Patricia Clarke , the centerpieces and menus were both beautiful and colorful. The meat was skillfully cut and packed by the well-known company of Miles , Morrison, and Richards, Inc. Among the newlyweds present were the former Irene Gates , Delphine Misouri, Patricia Cree , Ioan Daugherty, Eleanor Warholic, Iudy Shore , and Janet Spangle. The playground activities were supervised by Physical Education teachers , Sally Witherow, Helen Grimes , and David Buchanan. Assuming the roles of lifeguard since we had rented a private beach, were Robert Bott, Paul Johnston, Robert Pearce, Bill Reilly, and Frank Van Scoyoc. Of course, there were a few minor casualties , as there are at any event of this size. Our capable doctor, Paul Brungo, was assisted in his duties by our able-bodied nurses-- Iudy Belin, Dorothy Ecklund, Gwen Green, Barbara Greenawalt, Nancy Iunod, and Carol Leyo. No one had to worry about car trouble because we had several able mechanics on hand at all times, Zane Irwin, Melvin Dillen, Iack Dotts , and Charles Strong. By the way, it should be mentioned that most of the funds for this event were supplied by oil baron, Fredrick Rudnick, and steel king, Richard Shank. Many of our vegetables and other farm products were supplied by leading agriculturists Floyd Shaffer, and Iames Summers . A private air show was staged by the Air Force members from our class who had been granted temporary leave to come to the reunion, Ellis Dillen, Melvin Dixon, Ray Heverly, Elbert Moore, Dick Peterson, and Bob Sinclair. The guests were greatly honored by the presence of the first woman president of the United States, Helen M. Kovalsky, accompanied by her Social Secretary, Ianice Dillon. Her lawyer, Carole McGill also made the trip. We had a marvelous concert, presented on the second night by Dan Iohnston and Marlene Spaid, who were co-conductors. The entertainment took place in the Palm Beach Symphony Hall, designed and built by architects David Shrock and Franklin Marano. Sandra Swasing, Helen Wilkinson, Ioanne Sinclair, and Caroline Muhaw had the responsibility of contacting the former students of our Alma Mater. The telephone calls to our distant classmates were handled by long--distance operator, Sandra Kingston. -Placement. of all of us in hotels was arranged by movie star, Ioy Kaye Krisey leading educator, Ianice Boone, and model, Eileen Traveny. The 'show was greatly enhanced bythe antics of comedians Herb Donahue and Dick Hewitt. That wonderful equestrienne , Iudy Ensbrenner, also put on a performance. Since they knew quite a bit about these things , the business end of the affair was taken care of by these secretaries: Virginia Bartek, Julia Glass, Patricia Gogolla, Tressa Lender, Louise Mowchan, and Anna Mae Bretzin. As you can well imagine , the class eagerly renewed friendships and reminisced about the never-to-be-forgotten school days . Since this could never have been accom- plished Without a reunion, everyone enthusiastically agreed that the affair was a huge success .- ,,'T, Last EWU And Testament We, the Senior Class of B. C. I. At Olll' first class meeting we elected our class officers: Kathy Shrock, Presidentp Bob Phillips, Vice-Presidentp Patricia Warholic, Secretary: Bonnie Bloom, Treasurer. During our first year, we were veritable busy bees . Our biggest project was a bake sale which was a tremendous success. Other activities included several skating parties and candy sales. Outstanding among all these was our trip to Gettysburg, Harrisburg, and Hershey, an event that climaxed our Freshman year. While we were , of course, vitally concerned with all these things , we were equally concerned with choosing our class colors of pink and black , and receiving our class hats as well as our class emblems. Soon we were entering Senior High and found it much different from junior High. We started the year by selecting these class officers: President .............. Kathy Shrock Secretary . . . . . joyce Grimes Vice-President ........... Bonnie Bloom Treasurer ......... Marilyn Ninosky Student Council Representatives. . .Ioyce Grimes , Patricia Warholic , Tom Holjencin , and jim Rea. Our class advisors were Mrs. Gorman and Mrs. Brady. During this year we held a skating party and the Christmas Dance. However, we considered the Sock Hop , which we also sponsored, as probably the outstanding activity. Perhaps this was because it was a little different from the usual type of dance, or maybe it was because dancing in our socks, while a little unique , meant more work for mother or the automatic washer. Following the precedent of our freshman and sophomore years , we realized that our first consideration was to elect class officers. ln our junior year these were as follows: President . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Kathy Shrock Secretary. . . . . . Beverly Hadden Vice-President . . . . . . . . . . . Bob Phillips Treasurer ...... Sandra Seabolt Student Council Representatives. . .joyce Grimes , Evelyn Vanish, jim Rea , and David Shaffer. Our class advisors were Mrs. Gorman, Mr. Dean, and Mr. Bearer. just before Christmas we received our class rings. Highlighting our activities this year were a New Year's Semi-Formal Dance and the junior Prom , held on May 9. Music for the prom was provided by the Ray Sharbaugh Quartet and the theme was Canadian Sunset . This theme was extremely helpful in overcoming the obstacle presented by the bleachers. Since these bleachers could not be hidden, the ingenious juniors disguised them as mountains. The prom went off very successfully due to the eagerness and hard work of the whole class. Now, approaching our own senior year, we would like to turn our thoughts to this graduating class, as we extend to them best wishes for luck and success in the future. ' Sophomore News Well, after nine years of hard work we finally made it. Sophomores! As our first official business , we elected class officers. The following were chosen: Cla s s Officers Patty McNulty ----- President Peg Hahn ----------- Vice President Doris Knotts --------- Treasurer Iudy McCartney ----- Secretary Student Council Officers Ioyce Orrick Larry Belin Carol Roland Iohn Stasik To start off the year's mad social whirl, our class advisors , Mrs. Burmeister, Miss Airhart, and Mr. Philips, accepted our idea concerning a Thanksgiving dance. After the holidays the winter passedso quickly with various school activities that we soon realized it was April. In the springfso goes the old sayingl a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love. So, always willing to cooperate , the obliging tenth graders gave a skating party to offer these young mentan opportunity to expound this adage. After providing the boys with a skating party, in all fairness we needed something for the girls. Since they are always so neat and pretty, we decided on a slop hop, thus proving there are two sides to everything. As old, sloppy outfits were called for, the dance was more slop than hop. All in all, we had a fine year. Because we made such an impression on some teachers, they may want a few of us to come back for a return engagement. We watch the Seniors enviously as they graduate with our best wishes and congratulations. V X ,,,.. Dedicated to this principle, libraries all over the world strive to satisfy reading interests. Here at BCI our library is small and, judged by this fact alone, might seem inadequate. While our book supply is more limited than we would wish, the fiction section especially is greatly supplemented by Clearfield County books supplied by a bookmobile, which comes to our school about every six weeks. The library club, composed of the group you see above , has the responsibility of maintaining and operating the BCI Senior High School Library. This year they h5V9 dOU9 SUCT1 GH 9XC9l1G1'1'E job that the librarian from Clearfield on one of her six- weeks visits commented upon the neat, well-organized library shelves. Since the student librarians devote their study halls to this work, they are to be highly comm- ended. Indeed, the reward they receive is the same type of satisfication Christopher Morley expresses when he says: When you sell a man a book, you don't sell him just twelve ounces of paper and ink and glue--you sell him a whole new life. Good sportsmanship of our basketball players has greatly influenced the large attendance at home games.
