Starting the year with an audience-participa- tion hour, he followed it with equally interesting programs, Mark Hatfield from Willamette Uni- versity described the Republican National Con- Ventiong Lewis and Clark drama students pre- sented s laugh-filled backstage sequence, and students campaigned for funds for a much- needed electric football scoreboard. Second semester elections brought brothers into the lime-light. Dick and Bob Grant both took student body offices, Dick as president and Bob as manager. Among the outstanding assemblies the second semester was the speech on conservation by Bon Shay, l946 Beaver graduate. The annual Fire Squad assembly presented Dr, Richard Morgan with his colorful Canadian Mountie slides, an absorbing talk by FBI special agent explained how to hold up a bank and get caught, an Easter assembly was sponsored by the l-li-Y. Biggest hit of the year was the presentation of tiny tots from the Kinder Kollege. An innovation this year was the appointive of- fice of assembly manager held first semester by Kent Davidson. , ,, 1l1iI'7Qiv,'v 'l Evffizfwr., . --,r'e'?,-af!-G'-1L'.f If--1, ' :ffl. f':J.j-f' 3 v D 'ffi:.Fia?: 'els eff! Led by versatile Dick Bowman, beaten only by the state champion in the 220-yard run and rated fifth in state broadjumpingg Mel Mori, speedster on the high hurdlesg and Dick Ger- vais, flashy speed merchant in the 100-yard dash, the tracksters spilled all competition on the cinders but fell short in field events. In the year's first stop, the colorful Willam- ette Relays, Ed Bader's sprint stars picked off two firsts and a pair of thirds to finish near the top of the winners' list. Grabbing victories were the relay and shuttle hurdle relay teams, both for the second consecutive year. Churning into their regular season schedule with the annual Beaverton Relays, the Orange- men chalked up a record-tying time in the sprint medley but still fell to third in final point totals. Records tumbled as the well-seasoned run- ners skimmed over the track to new 880-relay marks in both the county and district meets while Dick Bowman erased the standards in the broadjump at both the conference and county contests. Rounding out their schedule, the Bevo-men qualified four men-Dick Bowman, Mel Mori, Bart Olson, and Dick Gervais-for state cham- pionships where the quartet, consistent win- ners, piled up a second, third, and fifth to emerge with a final tenth-place state rating. Howard Eaton skims over the 10-foot. 2-inch mark with per- fectly executed form. Bart Olson and Dick Bowman, two outstandini members of the 880 relay team, practice before going to t e state meet where they took third.
