It is equipped with the latest new appliances, including a dish- washer that washes 6250 dishes an hour. Mrs. Iosephine Weaver, who is in charge, and Mrs. Emma Baker, her assistant, pro! duce and serve food for l6U to 200 students a day. Student helpers were Al Taylor, Mel Mori, Leota Cogswell, Anna Savage, Wayne Kolstad, Diane Smith, Martha Evans, and Stanley Wilson. The favorite food of the students was, in '51-'52, as always, hot dogs, ice cream, and desserts made in home economics classes. The few items never seen on the trays were olives, and salt and pepper shakers. Besides being used as a daily lunch room, the cafeteria contributed its facilities to or- ganizations such as churches, Iunior Cham- ber of Commerce, Safeway stores, Boy Scout meetings, TYV Press Club meetings, Y- Teens, Senior breakfasts, football banquets, after-game dances, and band practices. Mrs. Emma Baker Mrs. Iosephine Weaver Standing ready to milk The Cow during lunch period are: Alan Taylor, Stanley Wilson, Mel Mori, student cafe- teria workers. Preparini for the chow line are Wayne Kolstad, Letoa Cogswell, eathean Pickner, Sharon Wilson and Martha Evans, cafeteria aids, THE MEN BEHIND THE MEN BEHIND THE DESKS A school of 900 is like a delicate machine-it must have trained, efficient operators to keep it running smoothly. BHS has fourteen of these men behind the men behind the desks. Some maneuver the nine-ton busses through snow, over ice, or in blinding rain on their twice-daily routes to students' doors, some spend their days pushing leaky pipes and broken windows, shoveling slushy snow, and floor polishers and broorns, washing chalky boards, fixing manipulating lawnmowers fwhen and where there is a lawnl . . all in all keeping the building sanitary and spot- lessly clean to provide the proper setting for educationg others :see that athletic uniforms, PE. towels, and cafeteria laundry are always white, still others have charge of the Snack Bar. The fcur custodians, who also double as bus drivers are: Carl Larson, Iohn Day, Gene Beighley, and Myrle Howell, ln addition, those who serve soley as bus drivers are: lay Couch, Beryl Howes, Ned Hutchinson, Leonard Kutz, William West, Vernon Wood, lim Schurman, and A. I, Norris. Laundresses are Myrtle l-lart and Luella Day. The latter was assisted in the Snack Bar by student helpers Roberta Martin and Arlene Terry. FRESHMAN - STARDUST They dreamed great dreams of high school life, and there was stardust in their eyes-the Class of 1956 proved that they weren't too young at all. Distinction was brought to the freshmen when Harris Hansen was voted the most outstanding 4-H boy in Washington County, Frankie Warrens helped to put the freshmen in the public eye when he frequently tooted his sax and clarinet in assemblies. ln athletic cirlces, the class was outstanding. Willard Horton floored eight other schools in the District One wrestling tournament, thereby Winning the right to en- ter state competitiori. The frosh hoopsters tied for first place in the basketball league. Top scorers were Roger Peck, Ted Miller, Bob Grant, and Dirk Davidson. Typical of the class's generosity and willingness to go along with the crowd was the way in which they contributed S40 to the Y-Teens for a Korean girl's edu- cation. The 262 freshmen further showed their quality by electing a fine group of officers to lead them in their activities, Presidents Ted Miler and Bob Grant were assisted by Vice-Presidents lim Sirinerud and Roger Peck. And no wonder there was so much variety in the weekly meetingsefor head man was ver- satile ASB President Ed Ramsdell, on occasion, also football halfback, basketball guard, and base- ball shortstop. Ed's sparkling personality appeared time and again in his assemblies, long will be remem- bered the Panamero show, which took students on Adventures in Guatemala, and the Torch Honor's colorful Christmas presentation of Tchaikkowsky's Nutcracker Suite. ln his role of chief executive, Ed had very able assistance from other members of the cabinet Big Bart Olson, as vice-president, took charge of one assembly in a royal blue evening gown. There was tall, stately Io Allene Krueger, who, in her role as secretary, helped to add much dignity to the presi- dent's desk. A boy with lots of cents was Dick Bowman, whose dex- terity with mathematical figures helped him in his position of treasurer. Athletic events were the ri p mary concern of Carolan Popp, reporter, who phoned in all home game results to Portland newspapers. All the business of sellin St d g u ent Body Cards and game announcements was taken care of by Bon Mercer, ASB manager. Hummer Editor Travis Cavens put out nine monthly is- sues of a real humdinger of a newspaper, business manager of the Hummer was Leigh Wilcox. The first big event was the Spanish assembly, which featured Dr. Richard Morgan's lecture on Adventures in Guatemala. At Christmas time, the club went to Bill Winters house for a real authentic Mexican dinner, complete with hot tamales. After the meal, they observed a Mex- ican custom by breaking the pinata, a bell-shaped bag filled with candy and gifts. All evening the guestzi spoke Spanish. At the February meeting the club had as its guest speaker Ioanne lohnson, a 16-year-old Pacific Univer- sity sophomore who was born and brought up in Ven- ezuela. To help fulfill their purpose of promoting brother- hood and discouraging prejudice between our stu- dents and the people of Latin America, these members corresponded with pen pals in Venezuela, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Dominican Republic: Gwen Ellis, Susan Thayer, Sandra Young. Elaine Sullivan, Barbara Stanley, Robert Ricks, Mar- lene Paris, Nadine Manos, Sandra McGeorge, Larry Caulfield, Sue Anderson, and lean Allen. Bea Morgan was the president, assisted by Bill Winter, vice-president, Secretary Sue Thompson, Hern- ispheric Recorder Gayle Broyles, and Treasurer Caro- line Briggs were the other officers. GET THE POINT The point was the thing to 240 G.A A. girls who did everything from climbing mountains to dancing the Charleston in order that they might earn an athletic letter. In addition to working for points individually, members ol the Girls Athletic Association participated in many club activities all through the year. There were several roller and ice skating parties, a skiing expedition to Mt. Hood, a Last Chance Dance atter the St. Helens-BHS football game, and hot dog sales during the football season. The members were invited to three play days at Hillsboro and McMinnville high schools, and Pacific University, where they participated in games with girls lrom other schools. During the respective seasons, the members formed tcams and entered volleyball and basketball intramural games. Later in the year a tennis team was initiated. The entire membership ol the G.A.A. was split up into squads which acted as commit- tees. Scruad leaders were Diane Mamiyn Thompson, S c h e n el, LaVonne Hiller, Nan Bonnie MacLeod, El- Rhodes, Mona Gosselin, Carol Burris, 9 Gemfift Evellfn Kay Bader, LaDonna Hovde, Pat Hud- dleston, Ruby Taylor, Gayle Benson, Darlene Wright and Colleen Helmcke. Beaverton finished the season with second place honors in the TYV. football conference, tying for this rating with Oregon City, whom they also tied in a mid-season game on Oregon City turf. The outstanding performance of five men snared positions for them on the T.Y.V. Allstars. Bart Olson, back, and Dick Bow- man, end, attained berths on the offensive team, while Ed Bams- dell, back, Dick Gervais, end, and Bob Lee, tackle, acquired positions on the defensive team. Those receiving honorable men- tion awards were: Dale Burger, Mel Marsh, Dean Aulerich, and Iohn Shaffer. Playing a major role in the season was the B-Hi backfield, Numerous victories could be accredited to Ernie Zwahlens pass- ing skill and the deceptive running of Ed Bamsdell and Bart Olson, the three leading ground gainers for the Bevos. The only loss of the nine game tilt was a 27-7 win attributed to Hillsboro, perennial Beaver foes. The outlook for next years squad is very promising in view of the number of returning letter- men and the capable lads coming up from the ranks of the I.V's. Beaver grid men gave a sparkling performance in l95l, but in l952 will again be out for another try for that 9-U season and top rung on the T.Y.V. ladder. 100 lunior varsity football squad coached by George Hussell played a regular schedule of seven games in the TYV, winning one from Tigard l3-G on the local tield. Starting the ball rolling for the Bel-li team, Captain Ierome Olson hurdled his way to first place in the high hurdles. Other firsts were grabbed by the shuttle hurdle relay team, the sprint medley relay team, and Dock Bowman in the broad jump. During the 440 relay race, one of the Bevo men slipped while passing the baton, but the managed to cop a fourth place in that event. Sprinting down the straight-offway they swept up a 7l-5l victory over Hilhi in a duel meet at Hillsboro. Spilling all other TYV schools in the con- ference meet, they took first in almost every depart- ment. Around the far turn it was another race to victory in the county meet on our own track. Coach Eugene Duncan welcomed back only four regulars to the squad, but players up from the l95U lunior Varsity and other returning lettermen filled in the vacant shoes to provide the Beavers with a top-notch crew. The four Ed Ramsdell, shortstop, Ed Zurflueh, left field, Glenn Pointer, third base, and Ed Clemens, first basffcombined talents to give the Bevos a tight infield defense and outfield nucleus. Glenn Pointer and Ed Clemens piloted the l95l squad while swinging potent bats to lead the team at the home plate. Sophomore Ernie Zwahlen, who performed on the '50 l.V.'s, did an outstanding job on the pitching staff in winning two of Beaverton's four victories, both by big margins. Completing the mound staff were regulars lerry Erickson and Dick Grant, along with lock Oberst and Kent Davidson. On the base paths, Ed Clemens guarded the initial sack, diminutive lim Tsugawa took over second base duties, speedster Ed Ramsdell showed fine defensive work at shortstop, and Glenn Pointer, back for his fourth year, dominated third. Bill Miller did a mansized job in controlling the pitchers from his catcher's position behind the plate, Ed Zurfluen, Dick Wise and Mervyn Boyd patroled the outfield and were better than average defensively. 5 U!!
