Evidence ot the growth ol Beaverton Union High School Was shown this year in the acquisi- tion of its own system of bus transportation. Early in l946 the union board authorized the purchase of tive White buses, Actual delivery was rnade possible in August through the eitorts ot Iarnes Schurrnan, Eugene Duncan, George Gordon, Sr., Archie Zimlorick Everett Morgan and Melvin Beeler who tlew east and drove the buses to Oregon. To these men and the school board who added another step toward the goal of an efficient and modern school system the statt dedicates this l947 Beaver. DICATION r Wells, Kurtz, Lazuck, Schurman, and Smith pose Mr, Iarnes Schurman att their ea ly morning run. pervises the buses. TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT Six bus drivers covered a total ot l25 miles morning and night to transport an approximate 300 students to and from school each day. ln additin to these daily trips the buses were made available for interscholastic activities. Athletic teams were taken to sched- uled games, student spectators were accommodated, the glee club, debate teams and band were furnished transportation when it was needed. lt is estimated that the aggregate mileage of all the buses would top forty-tive thousand miles for the year. Men who assisted Mr. Iames Schurman, the superintendent ot transportation, were: Mr. Melvin Wells, Mr. W. C. Kurtz, Mr. Paul Lazuck, Mr. Everett Morgan, Mr. Duane Kingsley, Mr. Glenn Hollar, and Mr. Virgil Smith. ,14 ' V. 7' 2 .4 ' 'iv . ' 4 I ' 4 1 1 hx ,1 fu ,A era' Qian an-vw mana' 'ue c :: 3: , , . . SUPERINTENDENT As vital to the operation of the school as the chief mechanic to the buses is l, R. lfetzler, superinten- dent of the high school. The steady influx of fami- lies into the Beaverton area has brought an acute need for expansion which will be accomplished in an eventual building pro- gram. Mr. Metzler is to be riighly complimented for having kept the present :hassis not only intact, but in good running order un- der the strain of the pres- ent overload. THE SCHOOL BOARD Purchasing new buses for a complete transporta- tion system, planning a new school building and managing the affairs of a union district which is still less than two years old were major problems con- fronting the school board this year. Mr. W. D, Cameron, chairman, was assisted by Mr. George Gordon, Mr. Allen Armfield, Mr. L. I, Furlong, Mr. Ross Hart and Mrs. Eugene Duncan, clerk. The students and faculty are greatly indebted to these busy men who give of their time so generously that Beaverton High School may be kept oper- ating smoothly. My In their traditional pigskin superiority, the T formation Beavers garnered second position in the Tualatin-Yamhill Val- ley league, via five wins, one tie, and a sole loss. The team opened the season in grand style at the Hillsboro Iamboree, when they gained a 14-O triumph over Tillamook. The next night, Oregon City found revenge over last year with a 19-U blanking in a non-league fracus with the Beavers. Coach Duncan's team found strong opposition in their league opponents, but on five occasions they battled from behind half- time scores to gain victories. In the thrill-packed climax of the year, the Beavers bowed to the Mclvfinnville champion Grizzlies, 14-7, after holding a 7-O halfrtime edge. lack O'Connor and Ioe Gervais, seniors, were elected back- field and line captains, respectively, by their team-mates. BASKETBALL The Beaver basketball team finished with a mediocre sea- sonal record of l2 Wins and 15 losses this year. In TYV league play, the Big Five won tive and lost nine to climb out of a cellar tie into a titth-place tie with Hillsboro. Beaverton's hopes for a state tournament berth were choked off in the initial game of the county championships, with a 40-25 drubbing by Hillsboro. Bob Whitworth, diminutive three-year letterman and captain of his team, was voted TYV all-star guard. A tine ball handler, he racked up the huge total of 282 points during the season. Smiling lack OVCOUDOY landed a forward position on the sec- ond team. This senior won the free-throw cup with a com- mendable SOW.
