I ff?- saga. 'R 2? 797 Fl ff ' ll 0COZ,,, Published by the Associated Students of Beaverton High School Beaverton, Oregon May, 1944 D As the flag salute strengthens the patriotic bonds within the school so the song Come Beavers Join exhorts the cooperative spirit of the student body. This spirit has carried them success- fully through the year-long bond and stamp campaign, the Red Cross and paper drives, and other service projects, and, in measure, through the football, basketball, and track clashes with other schools. Beavers respond to the appeal of this song, not only while in school but alter leaving ir. On all battlefronts defending our American ideals are Beavers who are meeting this challenge. To Beavers the world over, to whom the school songs convey a special meaning, we humbly dedicate this book. '7n Decmfedf GORHATWT LEVERETTT, '45 REVEREND VE P. From their ranks stepped Margaret Stark, drum majorette, and jean Godwin and Robert Myers, debaters, who continued to win honors throughout the four years. Under the advisorship of Miss Sweeney, Miss Sanford, and Mr. Mills, they lent their ardor and energy to the support of all service proiects. Welcoming the incoming frosh with a gay Quiz Party, they set the pace for a successful sophomore year, contributing Roberta Pomeroy, pianist, Dona 'Lee Sawtell, song leader, and Felix Rosch, manager, to the roll of student body officers. Miss Irwin, Miss Barnes, and Miss Zurcher guided the class. Entering fully into school activities as juniors, they were outstanding in many ways. A dozen iunior boys won recognition in sports. With a Sophisticat1on theme, the junior prom was held in the atmosphere of an exclusive country club. The class was supervised by Miss Duff, Miss johnson, and Mr. Webb. Feeling justly victorious, with more service numerals to their credit than any other class, as seniors they again played prominent roles in sports, scholastics, music, debates, drives, and dances. Queen Jean Godwin royally ruled at the Girl Reserve Spring Reign, Gene Springer completed his athletic career by capturing letters in all three major sports, and Robert Myers won district honors in oratory. Miss Conoly, Miss Sanford, Mr. Duncan, and Mr. Metzler aided the seniors, who will receive diplomas in an impressive ceremony Friday, May 26. OFFICERS lsr SEMESTER Gene Springer ,... .. . Fired by the enthusiasm of Laurent- Mayfield, editor-in-chief, and associate editors Bill Duhaimehlean Godwin, and Ruth Van Kleek, the stall entered into scrihbling, copyreading, and ad- collecting with gusto. GLEE CLUB Theres music in the air appropriately described what occurs when the girls' Glee Cluh sings under the direction of Miss Eleanor Zurcher, Both serious and frivolous entertainment was pro- vided by the thirty-live promising Jenny Linds in various assemblies, while rollicking, spirited folk songs, delicate haunting melodies, soul-stirring Negro spirituals, and church hymns floated through the halls during second period every morning. Several evening programs combining the band and the glee club were given. At Christmas, white-rohed girls holding flickering candles made the true spirit of Christ- mas live again while they sang old and new Yuletide favorites, During the year, classes in song direction were held and each girl learned how to lead the chorus. ORCHESTR A The orchestra, under the direction of F. E. Bushnell, made several appearances in assembly programs and entertained the student body with brisk marches, dreamy xvaltzes, and musical selections vi ith an Oriental flavor. Although this group was not heard as often as the other musical organizations, its performances were welcomed by the student bodv. .Y Janet Francis, lst Semester pianist, gives Johnnie Tennant, pianist 2nd semester, some pointers H Um a c W 015. Amy-Jmxor ,www BETTY ANN NULSEN As American as Yankee Doodle Dandee and equally as true in spirit, is Betty Ann Nulsen, for she is the spring of action in B.H.S.' service to our lighting boys and girls everywhere. As a part of her Hummer staff activities, Betty Ann has aided in maintaining a mutual address file for warfront Beavers, mailing to them each issue of the Hummer. Along with her duties as a bond sales- man, she has been in charge of the packing and distributing of gift boxes for local selectees. The electric smile which lights Betty Ann's face is a service in itself as a morale booster. NORMAN TOELLE Gifted with a promising speaking ability, Norman Toelle rates as one of the most outstanding boys in the sophomore class. With an eye for both politics and athletics he was sophomore class president and has proved his worth on the football squad and track team. All this, and scholastically minded, too, Norman is a member of the Torch Honor. Bids are high on Norman Toelle's future at B.H.S. JACK Ross Will he serve a third term? Jack Ross, after serving two terms as president of the freshman class, is still high on the ballots with all the 7 Beavers. Stepping deep into the heart of school A activities, jack has participated in football, Q' basketball, and track. He is a member of the Fire Squad, Kilowatts, and Winged B. , 1 .351 MARY POINTER Sugar and spice and everything nicr-that's what little Beavers are made of . . . And that is exactly what you'll find in Mary Pointer. Mary's shy but quick-witted personality was approved by the freshmen right from the start, and she was chosen class secretary. Her high scholastic record and her polished talent for piano playing first intro- duced her to the entire student body, then we staked our claim on Marv Pointer. ZWWJZZ an . ' WALTER PA YNE Doc Payne, the boy with the trumpet and a million dollar smile, has grinned his way to the position of president of the junior class and tops with the entire school. Walt's sparkling personality and versatility made him the ideal host of the junior prom and the man for the part in many Pep Club stunts. Swell is the word which sums up Walter Payne. .IEANNE KREMERS Still wearing the smile which won our hearts when she entered Beaver- ton high, Jeanne Kremers, with her natural grace and dignity, gained a position as princess of the Girl Reserve Spring Reign court and has acted as a delegate for the G.R. conference. She has participated in many school events, proving her dependability in the successful management of many assignments. Jeanne acted as the poised hostess ofthe 1944 junior prom. JANET FRANCIS Sunshine and song, Janet and a set of ivory keys -- they go together. And so, Janet Francis has helped to set B.H.S. to music. She gave the freshman class a tuneful background as class pianist and served this year as student body pianist. As a member of the Pep Club, she is a model of what the organization signifies. Her sunny personality and her unruffled disposition make janet a girl who's fun to know. BOB MH ERS Give it to Bob. He can handle it. Proving his ability and dependability, Bob Myers, an outstanding student, has brought many top honors to Beaverton high through his victorious bouts in extemporaneous, oratorical, and debate contests. A boy who quietly shoulders a big load, he has held many responsi- ble offices in organizations as well as ably fullilling the positions of student body treasurer and vice-president. Com- bining sincerity with his elever wit, his addresses have met our applause many times. A former Beaver backlield star himself, Ernie Stassen volunteered to assist coach Duncan during the 'I T football seasong his time spent and knowledge related y was appreciated by all athletes coming into contact : with his genial smile and forceful cane. Ernie was a freshman star at the University of Oregon before retiring from the game due to an automobile accident received while motoring through California. Assuming duties as head coach for the first time in his enviable career, Eugene Duncan capably led his athletic teams to high-ranking positions. Called upon at the beginning of the season, after deciding to work in a defense factory, the former civics and sociology teacher amassed a record on the gridiron that elevated the Beavers' totals over those of any recent year. Placing second in the T.Y.V. league was only one of his achievementsg he led his squad to a season record of 6 wins, 2 losses, and one tie in the annual Upigskin classic. Faced with a large turn out in all sports activities, Coach Duncan carried the brunt of a one-man coach- ing assignment and kept thirty boys out for football and twenty Hcasaba potters on the roster during the whole ofthe basketball season. Even under this task, Dunk, led his charges to a second tic for second place on the T,Y.V. league ladder during the year. He was chosen Man of the Month by the Hummer staff during the football season and justly deserved the credit handed him by others throughout 'F his First year at the helm of the Beaverton athletic department. 0' n Fzrft rau Bt ml Duh uint, Young, Curtis, Moshofsky fsitt1ngD,ROsS.
