This year the editors and staff of the 1968 Annual dedicate their yearbook to the Class of 1917 whose thoughtfulness and foresight began this ambitious project for the benefit of themselves and future generations. The foreword of the first annual read as follows: 'This, the first volume of The Beaver, has been planned and to our best ability published as the ideal of a balanced and unprejudiced annual, in which we have endeavored to present the best gems of our lives; and in the years to come we hope that this book will bring fond memories of High School days. This board was responsible for construction of our new Music, Science and Physical Education building, designed by Campeau and Crennan of Helena. Despite a strike called by Butte Carpenters Union on this $800, 000 project, Contractor Dan Ibey has surmounted this obstacle and it will be in use this year --as scheduled. The School Board also prepared the annual budget, hired teachers, and is certainly deserving of our gratitude for its efforts in continually better- ing the quality of education offered at Beaverhead County High School. Dr. Monger was chairman of the board; John Burwell, vice chairman; Paul Stahl, Jr., secretary; and Toke Contway, clerk. 6 PRINCIPAL B. W. LODGE You, the graduates of this year, stand at the beginning of a new phase in your life. What lies ahead is known as the time of maturity. Dur- ing the next decade or so, the development of your character, per- sonality, and ability will be the true test of your maturity. The most important mark of maturity is responsibility. First and foremost, we mean acceptance of the duty to take care of oneself, not to lean on others in the total dependence of childhood, to take pride in being self-supporting, to face realistically the necessity for work and not to indulge in idle hopes that good luck, inspiration or talent will see you through. Good luck, ADMINISTRATORS Kept School Functioning Smoothly To the Seniors: Students who are leaders climb as high as they can for the vision of the heights. I hope that for many of you seniors this day is not the end but the beginning of a still greater advance in life. May this be a true commence- ment for you, the beginning of a new phase of learning. May you climb upward on the ladder of education, aiming for new heights of knowledge and bring back to us the vision of new and greater ideas. May you rise to the very top of your chosen field as the leaders of tomorrow. Best of luck to each and every one of the seniors of the 1968 graduating class of Beaverhead County High School. Best regards. 7 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL CILE MITCHELL DON SMITH, JULES WENGER, and JIM ABBAS MRS. RUTH WENGER Custodians Jules and Don, our two industrious custodians, along with the assistance of Jim, were seen sweeping, dusting, and polishing during the school year. Although students left the school in disorder each day, they would come back the next morning to find every- thing in tip-top shape. Secretary Mrs. Ruth Wenger, Beaverhead County High School's able secretary, meets each day's demands with patience and efficiency. She performs her many secretarial duties with a cheerful smile. Mrs. Wenger is often seen at the mimeograph machine, running off tests, programs, and other school materials. Bus Drivers This capable and responsible corps of bus drivers provided the man power to drive the many buses that are needed to transport Beaverhead County High School's numer- ous rural students to school eacy day. They also took the students to many out-of- town sports events and other activities. Emerson Selway, bus maintenance man and foreman, gave much time and energy to keep the buses in excellent condition. PLAYS Lured Large Student Casts During the school year the Dramatics Club presented two three-act plays— On The Night of January 16th and The Curious Savage. The fall production On the Night of January 16th depicted the trial of Karen Andre a secretary accused of slaying her boss and lover. This play was different in that the jurors were selected from the audience. The spring production, The Curious Savage, was the story of a mother, Ethel, committed by her children to the Cloisters to keep her from spending the family fortune on a memorial fund that she had established, and where she met the gentle people who lived in a world of make believe. A series of one-act plays were produced during the year. The Valiant was chosen to be presented at the District Speech and Drama Meet held at Bozeman. This is the story of James Dyke, a man condemned to death and Josephine Paris, who believed him to be her lost brother. Other one-act plays included Three Pills in a ' Bottle, a children's story of Tony Sims, a boy who helped three people's souls by giving them the pill that he was to take to cure himself of a fever; When Shakespeare's Ladies Meet, a mixture of old and new when five heroines of Shakespeare's plays come to advise Juliet of her love affair with Romeo—instead Juliet advises them and To Bum a Witch , the story of two girls, Mary and Ruth, accused of witchcraft and of the betrayal of friendship. 7 . They dressed in dark slacks, and white shirts with dark ties at each game. . Boosted Beaver Spirit By devoting much time and effort to boosting the good school spirit at BCHS, the peppy Varsity Cheerleaders deserve a good deal of credit. The spirited cheerleaders--Linda Sanders, Kathy Cornish, Toni Graham (seniors), Laurie Garry and Cathy Crosser (juniors) purchased two new cheering outfits during the year -- one blue outfit and one gold outfit — through their own money-making projects and with support from the Student Council. Due to the illness of Cathy Crosser, Bertha Gay Court, alternate, served capably for some time. During the summer, the cheerleaders attended a clinic held in Billings. The lively B squad cheerleaders — in their new blue skirts, vests, and white turtle neck shells -- boosted the Trappers spirit at the JV games.
