(Taken from a speech given by Samuel Gilman at Harvard University on September 8, 1836.) To our parents, who alone can be thanked for conso- lation and help through wonderful, trying, fun-filled years in Beaverhead County High School, the editors and staff of the 1966 BEAVER dedicate their work. In this insignificant manner, we want to express our appreciation for your patience in dealing with us -- your busy, often ungrateful, yet ever grateful, teen- agers. Students in high school know better than anyone else the truth and reward revealed in these words: ’’Honor your father and your mother.” 4 Scenic Spots In Beaverhead County Hap Hawkins Lake, formed by Clark Canyon Dam, has become the most popular recreation spot in Beaver- head County. Scenic Spots in Beaverhead County is the theme of the 1966 Yearbook. On the following two pages and on all division pages throughout the annual breathtaking, beautiful scenes will greet you. These picture scenes show the variety of nature's landscaping to be seen and enjoyed in Beaverhead County. Rattlesnake Cliffs at Barretts Station served as a landmark to early settlers for many years and is one of Beaverhead County's beauty spots. 6 The gallows--a reminder of rugged Vigilante Days--stand at Bannack, Montana's first capital. The Beaver slide—originated in Beaverhead County--is a real help in haying operations in the famous Big Hole Basin. In other parts of the vast Beaverhead Valley, ranchers bale their hay, as shown at the Rock Island Ranch in the Black- tail. Beaver Rock, 17 miles north of Dillon, was a landmark in early days. From this rock our county received its name. Sawtooth Mountain, in the rugged Pioneer Range in Beaverhead County, is accessible by pack trails only. 7 Mrs. Margaret Hagenbarth, Mrs. Annie Ames (County Superintendent of Schools), Principal B. W. Lodge, Mrs. Eileen Stephens, Dr. Warren Monger (Chairman of Board), Mr. John Buiwell, Mr. Paul Stahl, Jr. , and Mr. J. Lester Jones. School Board The School Board of Beaverhead County High School volunteers its time and effort to see that the high school is efficiently operated and that the students have all advantages possible to gain knowledge. Each member has given of his time and thinking to see that our high school continued its progress and remained abreast of the changes in education. We, the students of Beaverhead County High School, owe much to these unselfish citizens who have worked hard to provide for us the best possible educational system. 8 PRINCIPAL B. W. LODGE Administration TO THE CLASS OF 66: The survival and progress of our country rests on the shoulders of each new generation of young people, such as yourselves. It does not rest on those of us who spend most of our time safeguard- ing what we have, nor does it rest on the backs of fearful men. It rests on those of you who have hope coupled with talent, faith married to farsightedness, and sincerity linked with skill. When our nation selects its future course, it is not sufficient to have the counsel of people who sit on committees; it must also hear the choice of individuals who decide on their careers, who select the ventures they wish to follow, and who take the risks they consider worthwhile -- all the time striving to fulfill their own aspirations. 9 GOOD LUCK ! Secretary Mrs. Wenger, the efficient and cheerful secretary of Beaverhead County High School, met all the demands placed upon her by the faculty and students with capa- bility and much patience. Mrs. Ruth Wenger Custodians The most efficient cleanup duo -- Jules Wenger and Don Smith -- were endlessly sweeping and polishing the halls of BCHS. Although disorder sometimes prevailed at the end of the school day, the students returned each morning to a bright and shining high school building. Bus Drivers Jules Wenger and Don Smith The responsible corps of bus drivers transported rural students to and from school each day, along with the extra duty of taking BCHS students to many of the out-of-town sports events and other activities. Jim Given, Dale Combs, John Wilkerson, Jim Moran, Don Smith, Bob Sawyer, Leonard Benjamin, and Ken Dye. Emerson Selway, the bus maintenance mechanic and all-around foreman at BCHS, posing with the Dillon Beavers bus. 10 Emerson Selway Just as serene, beautiful Morrison Lake, situated in the Medicine Lodge area, reflects the mountains which form her banks, so the stu- in BCHS reflect the personali- their teachers. In their knowledge, it is good to tent instructors to whom look for guidance. G, GILBERT, JR., ATTORNEY Pathways to Peace, the theme of the Spring initiation, was enacted by a candlelight ceremony; as the lighted candle was carried into the darkened auditorium, today's initiates -- tomorrow's leaders -- were led onto the stage in the path lit by the Torch of Truth. National Honor Society Leadership, Scholarship, Service, and Character are the necessary qualities required of membership in the National Honor Society. During the year meetings of this hon- orary group were held in the various homes of members. Two new and interesting initiation procedures highlighted the year. A spring outing furnished the conclusion of the year’s work. Officers during the year were Rod Merkel, president; Kitty Tayne, vice president; Frances Ann Mooney, secretary-treasurer; and Patty Kamp, historian. Mrs. McCol- lum was sponsor of the Honor Society. To dramatize the importance of justice and truth in our modem world, a courtroom ceremony, with faculty members as jurors, was utilized as the theme for the Autumn initiation. The initiates were tried, convicted, and found guilty of possessing the necessary qualities for membership in the National Hcnor Society. 61 Delegates TOP TO BOTTOM: Joan Nicholas, Susan Lively, Frances Ann Mooney, and Nancy Johnson. Annual Staff Working hard to present the best yearbook yet kept the members of the ANNUAL Staff hopping. Solicit- ing ads, writing stories, cropping pictures, and drawing pages were just a few of the many facets of this big task. The co-editors of the 1966 ANNUAL were Marcene Briggs, Joan Nicholas, and Patty Kamp. The editors were aided greatly by the many assistants who helped with the art work, typing, selling ads, and identifying pictures. Our steady typist was Linda Cook; Kitty Tayne's ability in art produced a very clever cover; Dan Struckman was the snapshot photographer; and Ray Dunn was the sports editor. Rosemary Miller and her business staff did an excellent job of financing this year's an- nual. Mrs. Stauffer was advisor of the ANNUAL Staff. Co-Editors Patty Kamp, Marcene Briggs, and Joan Nicholas. Beaver Staff Under the direction of Co-editors Don Campbell and Raelene Lynch, the BEAVER Staff worked hard to meet the paper deadline every two weeks. Writing stories, reporting, proofreading, writing headlines, and making up the paper was only a part of the work that went into each edition of the BEAVER. Don, Rae- lene, and Mr. Hull, journalism advisor, kept the paper running in an assembly line fashion. The paper could not possibly have been issued without the efforts of the hard-working business managers, Kathie Foster and Sandi Smith; who distributed ads and collected money; they were assisted by an indus- trious staff. The Business Staff helped to make the BEAVER a fine production. Thespians A hard-working Thespian Troupe 752 produced two plays for the entertainment of Beaverhead County High School. The fall production, ’’Junior Miss, ” was the hilarious story of a vivacious teenage girl who read too many magazines and saw too many movies. She invariably worked her family and friends into the plots of her schemes, which would have been safe to all concerned only if they had been forgotten before they were put into action. The spring play, ’’The Storm, ” was the serious story of a man bent on the revenge of his wife and daughter, victims of an automobile accident. Twelve students were initiated into Thespians this year as a result of their contribu- tions to making the plays successful hits. The officers for the year of 1965-1966 were Sandi Smith, president; Karen Kennedy, vice president; and Valeri Hanson, secretary-treasurer. Mr. Hull was the advisor.
