LODGE The editors and staff of the 1965 BEAVER dedicate this annual to a man who has shaped the minds of youth throughout his years at Beaverhead County High School. Particularly has the Class of 1965 felt his understanding and patience in all its projects. Here is a man who truly blends our school with the community. As he has endeavored to keep our school progressing, alert to new ideas and changes and sympathetic to the enthusiastic plans of his stu- dents, he has also exerted a profound influence on the growth of the community. We dedicate this annual with sincere gratitude to our principal, B. W. Lodge. 4 OUR HIGH SCHOOL IN A GROWING COMMUNITY FRONT ENTRANCE OF BEAVERHEAD COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL During the past year the community of Dillon and Beaverhead County High School have ex- perienced a new feeling -- growing pains. Dillon expanded with new buildings, new housing, and new people; and, as the community grew, our high school also found that it required new ideas and changes additional space and more teachers to fill the needs of its students. A few ot the many changes are shown on the following pages. THE B ... a project which was initiated by the B Club but whose work could not have been completed without the helping hands of many Beaverhead County High School students. Typical of Dillon’s commercial development during the year of 1964-1965 are the attractive new business structures pictured on the opposite page. ABOVE and at the RIGHT are two of the many new innovations that took place at Beaverhead County High School this past year. BCHS students worked closely with their business neighbors in expanding -- Future nurses provided valuable morale builders for the Eventide Rest Home patients- students compiled data for Montana Power Company use; and students served as a vital source of labor supply for summer forestry projects. As the high school youth helped the community, so the community assisted the students in many of their projects -- the Bureau of Land Management provided land for the B ; residents of Dillon were willing customers for band candy, Thespian plays, sports events and concerts; citizens helped to assure fine skiing facilities for students. BCHS and the community of Dillon have found them- selves working together in many ways -- the Key Club raked the Barrett Hospital lawn in the spring; the Elks Club provided food and entertainment after the prom and graduation exe.rcises; student typists assisted with the Red Cross Blood Drawing; and city and county officials cooperated with the Elks in allowing the Seniors to fill city and county posts on Government Day, usually held in May. This wonderful cooperation between our high school and the community has helped youth to understand adults and adults to understand youth. THE NEW OFFICIAL SCHOOL SEAL . . . drawn by Coach James Corr and adopted by the Student Council; the emblem will serve the school for many years. EVENTIDE REST HOME . . . $300,000 structure is providing nursing facilities for Beaverhead County's aged and infirmed. BEAVERHEAD NATIONAL FOREST SERVICE . . . Dedicated to conservation of Montana's natural resources and scenic beauty, these new quarters also house Beaverhead County's ASCS office. MONTANA POWER COMPANY. . . Long a supplier of electrical energy, these new headquarters and natural gas service marked their 1965 progress to this area. Administration Congratulations to the Class of 1965! This class, the largest to date in the history of the school, has definitely set a number of records and goals for future classes. In the four years you have spent in Beaverhead County High School, you--as a class--have been above average to excellent in all areas. Working with an excellent faculty, you have excelled in scholastic achievement, and you have been outstanding in extra-curricular activities. The Class of ’65, working with the B Club, left its mark with a large block B on the hill overlooking the valley. The athletes, under the able direction of an excellent coaching staff, established numerous records for future classes to shoot at; the same is true in Music, Speech, Drama, Home Ec, Vo Ag, and other activities. I know you will continue to excel as you go out, whether it be college, business, ranching, or other fields, which are opened to you as high school graduates. Keep up the good work and I assure you that the school and community will be watching your growth and success with pride and assurance. Best wishes, PRINCIPAL B. W. LODGE School Board LEFT TO RIGHT: Mrs. Margaret Hagenbarth, Mrs. Annie Ames (County Superintendent of Schools), Principal B. W. Lodge, Mrs. Eileen Stephens, Dr. Warren Monger, Mr. John Burwell, Mr. Paul Stahl, Jr., and Mr. J. Lester Jones. The school board of Beaverhead County High School is a group of people who have volunteered their time and effort to see that the high school is efficiently operated and that its students have all advantages possible for good learning. These dedicated people are an excellent example of the closely-coordinated relationship between our high school and our community. All are prominent citizens in the community and have contributed much to its progress. At the same time, each has given of his time and thinking to see that our high school continued its progress and remained abreast of the changes in education. The students of Beaverhead County High School are truly grateful for the efforts of their school board. A MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL BOARD: We feel that your excellent scholastic records, your pride in your school, and your good citizenship during the past four years and in the future are more than ample repayment for the hours we devoted to the interests of Beaverhead County High School. Chairman, School Board Emerson Selway, bus maintenance man and foreman at BCHS, gave much time and energy to see that the buses were kept in good condition and that students had a driver to all activities. He also did much of the driving for athletic trips, most long-suffering personnel at the high school. In addition to transporting students to and from school each day, which often re- quired getting up at a very early hour, they also took students to many out-of-town sports events and other activities. Each had to be qualified and each had a great responsibility. Hats off to the BCHS bus drivers! ! ! LEFT TO RIGHT: Jim Given, Bob Sawyer, Dale Combs, Pat Bur- well, Martin Malesich, Leonard Benjamin, Bill McNeill, and Bob Sullivan (substitute for Michael Gerdes). Bus Drivers The bus drivers of Beaverhead County High School were perhaps the Mrs. Ruth Wenger Secretary Mrs. Wenger, the faithful, patient secretary of Beaverhead County High School, met each day's duties with efficiency and capability. ALthough the secretarial duties kept her busy a great deal of the time, she always found time to deal with students' needs- varying from telephone calls to helping with homework—pleasantly and with a smile. The annual staff wishes to express its special thanks to Mrs. Wenger for her help in supplying informantion and identifying pictures. Jules Wenger and Don Smith Custodians The best cleanup men in the state -- Jules Wenger and Don Smith -- were always seen in the halls sweeping, dusting, and polishing. Although students left the school in disorder each day, they came back each morning to find every- thing in order and clean. Because they en- abled students to work in a clean-well lighted atmosphere, the janitors rendered to Beaverhead County High School an in- valuable service. Jules and Don—our thanks to you. Waiting for the return of the head of the household from a Nazi concentration camp makes the play exciting and full of suspense. The Thespian initiation was held on February 22. Those initiated were Mary Beth Miller, Valeri Hansen, and Karen Kennedy. Entertain- ment featured pantomines by the initiates and music by Mr. Hull on the harmonica. The troupe helped to sponsor the District Speech and Drama Meet held at Western Montana College on March 26 and 27. In addition to seeing that the 210 students in attendance were housed and cared for, the Thespians sponsored a dance in the Student Union. Beaver Staff Driven forward by Editor Tim Pilgrim and Assistant Editor Colleen Dougherty, the BEAVER Staff worked hard to meet the paper deadline every two weeks. Writing stories, reporting, proofreading, writing headlines, and making up the paper was only a part of the work that went into each edition of the BEAVER. Work on the paper was in an assembly-line fashion with Tim, Colleen, and Mr. Hull, BCHS journalism advisor, co-ordinating the activities. Proofreaders Barbara Chaffin and Cherie Miller caught most of the mistakes, while Susie Shafer typed the stories so that they were legible for the printers. Others on the staff served as reporters and as part-time proofreaders. Don Campbell sparked” this year's BEAVER sports page in many issues with his colorful and eye- catching sports jive. Ralene Lynch, another capable junior, authored many BEAVER features. Through- out the year, the BEAVER Staff issued a paper of which BCHS could be proud. Under the di- rection of David Wilson, the Music Department has shown a year-to-year growth until now over one hundred students enjoy this richly rewarding activity. Band Fifty-six instrumentalists made up a solid-sounding band this year at Beaverhead County High School. The hardy students endured cold, frosty nights on the football field and warm, noisy games on the basketball floor in their endeavors to Mpep up the home sports events. The group traveled to Deer Lodge for a basketball game and to Butte for the Divisional Tourney. Several members of the band accompanied the Mixed Chorus during its Christmas performance, and on April 20 the Spring Concert was presented. An excellent rating was received at the District Music Festival held in Deer Lodge on April 10 and 11. The entire band turned out to welcome the Cardston band delegation from Cardston, Alberta, Canada, on their tour to the United States in April. The evening's entertainment, including a peppy dance, showed the visitQrs true BCHS hospitality. Mr. Wilson, the patient director, felt that the balance and blend of the band had shown steady improvement during the year, resulting in a real show of talent. John Monger, president; Lin McGovern, vice president; Terry Jo Stephens, librarian; Linda Schuler, secretary; and Melody Walker, uniform custodian. sponsored BY ANDERSON SHEET METAL WORKS ROW Is Claire James, Lois Rodgers, Nancy Johnson, Rosemary Miller, Fern Ledbetter, Sally Andersen, Marcia Sanborn, Paul Stahl, Mark Pyeatt, Norman Gravely, Janet Mount joy, Janis Sinclair, Margaret Stahl, Lin Me Gov- ern, Diana Proctor, Frances Ann Mooney, Terry Jo Stephens; ROW 2: Connie Burwell, Barbara Chaffin, Susan Tuckett, Kathy Deputy, Clara Jones, Monty Rathie, Charles Martin, John Christensen, Barbara Sturm, Kathy Kennedy, Virginia Schmitt, Kathie Foster, Alice Feathers, Donna Smith; ROW 3: Dorothy Harms, Jean Hux- table, LaGay Thomas, Marilyn Broman, Rose Marie Sinclair, Carol Brundage, Einar Soyland, Larry Laknerjohn Monger, Eric Hansen, Sandy Smith, Judy Dodd, Susan Lively, Juanita DeLeon, Arlene Winn; ROW 4: Darcy Harr, LynnBuyan, Mary Blake, Adele Rebich, Colleen Dougherty, Randy Scott, Dick Peters, Bernard Shafer, David Hansen, Jim Selway, Keith Pewe, Clifford Schock, Diane Markovich, Karen Kennedy, Dorothy Grose, Theola Schreiber, and Paula Huffaker. Chorus Beaverhead County High School proudly boasted a seventy-voice Mixed Chorus this year - perhaps the largest in the high school's history. Mr. Wilson, director, felt that the chorus was characterized by the best balance of voices ever to be experienced at BCHS. During the Christmas season the chorus programmed a cantata, Night of Miracles, which was well received by a large audience. The group traveled to Deer Lodge April 10 and 11 where they performed at the District Music Meet; an excellent rating was received. The Spring Concert in May ended the Chorus' performances for the year. Representative of the ability of the choir were the four vocalists: Jim Selway, bass; Diana Proctor, second alto; Linda Schuler, first alto; and Connie Burwell, first soprano, who were selected from nearly 1500 applicants to take part in the All Northwest Chorus held in Portland, Oregon, April 1-5. Their last appearance during the year was a bac- calaureate and graduation exercises.
