1964 BEAVER BEAVERHEAD COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL DILLON, MONTANA We, the editors and staff of the 1964 Beaver, present this book to the students of Beaverhead County High School. We sincerely hope that our theme, Widening Hor- izons, will bring to you, in years to come, fond memories of your high school days. For Beaverhead High, the year 1964 was one of growth--we achieved the largest en- rollment in the school’s history; we gained additional teachers and students; and new organizations were formed. The 1964 Beaver contains a record of these changes-- changes which prove that we are truly widening our horizons. DEDICATION ...........3 SCHOOL BOARD..........4 FACULTY...............7 CLASSES..............11 ORGANIZATIONS........49 MUSIC ...............75 SPORTS ..............81 ACTIVITIES ..........95 ADVERTISING ........103 2 GEORGE RED” PETTIT Our 1964 Beaver is dedicated to a man who has worked hard the past 22 years to keep our school immaculate. This man has been a friend, a counselor, and a disciplinarian to hundreds of high school students. In his year of retirement, we hope in some small way to acknowledge the years of service to our school; so to you, Red Pettit, we dedicate our book. With this dedication go our gratitude and our most sincere wishes for the best in the future. 3 SCHOOL BOARD SEATED: Mrs. Margaret Hagenbarth, Mrs. Annie Ames, Mrs. Eileen Stephens, Mr. John Burnell, Dr. W. E. Monger. STANDING: Mr. J. Lester Jones, Mr. James Fitzpatrick, Mr. B. W. Lodge, Mr. Ted Hazelbaker. We of Beaverhead County High School owe much to the citizens of our community who give of their time and energy to provide our school with the best educational facilities possible. These men and women of the school board are always aware of new developments, and ask as their re- ward only the knowledge that we are learning in an up-to- date educational system. 4 PRINCIPAL, Mr. Lodge. The Railroad Crossing sign says: Look Both Ways Before Crossing.” Such a sign would well express the mood for the seniors. This is the time when you should look both ways, backward and forward, into the past, and into the future, as you stand at a major crossing point in life. I hope you will think of the immediate past with gratitude and appreciation for what you have learned and gained from it, and I pray that you might think of the future with a purpose in mind and with resolu- tion in your heart. Whatever your future job, career, or profession, the amount and quality of training and practice will be decisive. The famous French general, Ferdinand Foch, Commander-in-Chief of the armies of France in World War I, put it wisely: ”The battle is won the day before.” ADMINISTRATORS For you the year 1964 marks your gradua- tion from high school. Never has a class grad- uated from high school that has had greater responsibility or greater opportunity and challenge than the class of 1964. I firmly believe that the future of our great nation lies with you and active young people who will respond to the challenge of the con- temporary age. For twelve years you have provided basic preparation for your future challenge; but be ever aware that graduation from high school is a beginning and not an end. As you become woven into the fabric of so- ciety with its disappointments, its failures, its happiness, and its success, I challenge you to live in such a manner that the world will be a better place because you lived here. Congratulations and Best of Luck. TjL S ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL, Mr. Fitzpatrick. Jules Wenger, George Red Pettit CUSTODIANS Cleaning, scrubbing, polishing, waxing--these are the duties which keep our industrious janitors, ’Red and Jules, busy. Seldom seen without a dust mop or a broom, these two men do their jobs and still have time to smile and chat with a student or teacher. Some folks say that Red and Jules keep the cleanest boiler room in Montana; and from all indications, it is true. So--to the men whose job it is to keep our school beauti- ful--we extend a heartfelt thanks.” SECRETARY Meeting the day's demands with patience and efficiency, Mrs. Ruth Wenger, Beaverhead County High School’s capable secretary, has many varied tasks to perform. In addition to her secretarial duties, she must listen to end- less excuses and act as guide, friend, and sometimes parent to countless students. She prepares tests for teachers, issues report cards, and seldom makes a mistake. Mrs. Wenger, we salute you! BUS DRIVERS Because there are many students in rural areas, we need qualified school bus drivers to provide transportation to school from these outlying areas. BCHS boasts seven of the finest and most capable bus drivers in the state. These faithful drivers are: Jack Thiel, Eugene Bennett, Bob Sawyer, Mrs. Pat Burwell, Emerson Selway, Lowell Nelson and Jim Given. J. Thiel, E. Bennett, B. Sawyer, P. Burwell, E. Selway, L. Nelson, J. Given. 6 FACULTY FACULTY LINES UP FOR COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES Helen Andrus Claude Ankeny Marguerite Busch James Corr Alfred Golde Frank Hull James Keef Ron Kenison Robert MacDonald Lenore McCollum Richard Menti Gile Mitchell Gerta Mular William Mular Max Nield Ronald Paige Robert Sawyer Janet Selway Evelyn Stauffer Helen Wheat David Wilson Robert Wolf CLAUDE ANKENY Government, U. HART CLASS OF 1964 FRED M. BOURASSA CLASS OF 1965 Thou shalt lie down With patriarchs of the infant world--with kings The powerful of the earth--the wise, the good. Fair forms, and hoary seers of ages past, All in one mighty sepulchre. The hills Rock-ribbed and ancient as the sun; the Vales stretching in pensive quietness between; The venerable woods; rivers that move In majesty, and the complaining brooks That make the meadows green; and, poured round all, Old ocean's grey and melancholy waste-- Are but the solemn decorations all Of the great tomb of man. The golden sun, The planets, all the infinite host of heaven, Are shining on the sad abodes of death, Through the still lapse of ages. All that tread The globe are but a handful to the tribes That slumber in its bosom. - -Take the wings Of morning, traverse Barca's desert sands, Or lose thyself in the continuous woods Where rolls the Oregon, and hears no sound, Save his own dashings--yet--the dead are there: And millions in those solitudes, since first The flight of years began, have laid them down In their last sleep--the dead reign there alone, So shalt thou rest, and what if thou with- draw In silence from the living, and no friend Take note of thy departure? All that breathe Will share thy destiny. The gay will laugh When thou art gone, the solemn brood of care Plod on, and each one as before will chase His favourite phantom; yet ail these shall come, And make their bed with thee.” From Thanatopsis--W .C.
