1963 BEAVER BEAVERHEAD COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL DILLON, MONTANA The editors and staff of the 1962 BEAVER present to you, the stu- dents and faculty of BCHS, this annual. We hope that our theme REFLECTIONS OF THE YEAR 1962-1963, will bring to you, as you turn the pages, pleasant memories of the school year. DEDICATION..............................3 SCHOOL BOARD............................4 FACULTY.................................7 CLASSES................................11 ACTIVITIES.............................47 MUSIC..................................71 SPORTS.................................75 HI-LITES...............................89 2 To a woman who has set a wonderful example to all who have been under her leadership or in association with her in any way . . . To one whose qualities have won a place of high respect, deep ad- miration, and warm affection among both the student body and the faculty. With deep appreciation for her service to us as a teacher and friend, we dedicate this, the 1963 BEAVER, to Mrs. Lenore McCollum. SCHOOL BOARD SEATED: Mrs. Margaret Hagenbarth, Mrs. Annie Ames, Mrs. Eileen Stephens, Mr. John Burwell, Dr. W. E. Monger. STANDING: Mr. T. Lester Jones, Mr. James Fitzpatrick, Mr. B. W. Lodge, Mr. Ted Hazelbaker. We of BCHS owe much to the busy citizens of Beaver- head County who donate so generously of their time and effort to better the educational standards of our school and to see to the welfare of the students and faculty. They serve their community well, and their only reward is the satisfaction of seeing the high school students studying in a pleasant atmosphere. 4 OUR PRINCIPAL To the Class of 1963 . . . In our period of history, let us hope that we can solve our problems rationally, rather than emotionally. The Beaverhead County High School has attempted in the past four years, to install through traditions and a new concept of education, the qualities and emotional stability that will carry you, the class of 1963, through the critical years of your life. Your mental and spiritual machinery will be taxed to the limit, holding fast to what is good. The best effort is necessary to make the transition from a lower to a higher level. We have confidence in this class of 63, many of the class will, through effort, attain a higher standard. Let me assure you, if you make the effort the rewards will be great, both mentally and spiritually. Congratulations, and Good Luck. B. W. Lodge, Principal Assistant Principal, Mr. Fitzpatrick; Principal, Mr. Lodge. 5 Mrs. Ruth Wenger CUSTODIANS Jules Wenger and Red Petit are the custo- dians of BCHS. They have the tremendous task of keeping the school in top shape. SECRETARY Much credit must be given to Beaver- head County High School's secretary, Mrs. Ruth Wenger. She registers new students, writes permit slips, keeps the books, and answers the innumerable questions which the students ask. Jules and Red BUS DRIVERS The seven bus drivers of Beaverhead County bring the out-of-town students safely to school. They always have a smile for their passengers regardless of the time or weather. The Beavers won both contests against the Central club this season, winning 49-40 in Dillon, and 65-52 in Anaconda . Players shown in these photos are: No. 11, Jerry Stone; No. 14, Jim Womack: No. 22. Jon Womack; and No. 24, Ed Ferris of the Beavers; and No. 15. Valanic; No. 31, Murphy; and No. 43, Haffey of the Saints . ABOVE: Showboat Jim Womack bewilders Valanic with a dazzling dribbling display. LOWER LEFT: Murphy tries in vain to stop Rocky Stone's attempt to score. LOWER RIGHT: Ed Ferris' persistent drives to the baseline hurt the Saints throughout the game. 84 SKIING STANDING: Patty Archer, Chris McArthur, Barbara Remely. KNEELING: Lin McGovern. Skiing and Montana go together, as the old saying says, ’’like a horse and carriage.” BCHS has every reason to be proud of the students who make up its skiing teams. This past year, the girls' team placed fourth out of ten competing teams, and the boys’ team placed sixth out of thirteen competing teams in the state meet. This fine performance should indicate that BCHS will field a strong team next year, as only Chris McArthur and Barbara Remely of the girls’ team will be lost through graduation. 85 LEFT TO RIGHT: Bill Dallas, Kim Williams, Russell Jones, Dave Hagenbarth, Jim Spehar, John Monger, Jim Rieboff. FIRST ROW: Rex Huntsman, Wes Maze, Jim Mooney, Paul Johnson, Bill Huntsman. SECOND ROW: Coach Menti, Dale Kurtz, Tom Burris, Mike Scofield, Walt Warrick, Dale Arbour, clownin' Coach Kato. THIRD ROW: Mike Barrett, Mike Morton, Bill Monger, Ron Rebish, Larry Lakner, Jim Johnston. WRESTLING Wrestling as a varsity sport made a very successful debut at Beaverhead County High School last winter. Its popularity here in future years should rival that of basketball if the performances turned in during the first season indicate anything. The following excerpt from that season’s record readily shows how quickly the relatively inexperi- enced Beavers improved against their tough opposition: Beavers . . . 21 . . . . . . Butte Public Bulldogs 39 Beavers . . . 11 . . . . . . Bozeman Senior Hawks .... . 41 Beavers . . . 17 . . . . . . Butte Public Bulldogs . 31 Beavers . . . 39 . . . . . . Granite County (Philipsburg) . . . 30 Beavers . . . 28 . . . . . . Butte Central Maroons .... Jim Mooney, Bill Huntsman, Rex Huntsman, Mike Scofield, Mike Barrett, Mike Morton, and Bill Monger qualified for state wrestling competition, an outstanding accomplishment for the first year. 86 Sponsored by BEAVERHEAD PRINTERS Ed Ferris, shown here clearing the high jump- bar, also holds the school record in the 440 yard dash. He was one of two Beaver trackmen who participated in the MSC Invitational at Bozeman.
